While getting Harang for Hall was probably a pipe dream, I'd strongly re-evaluate acquiring him from Cincy in the offseason. Yes, it's a large salary to pick up, but if we're picking much of it up, we shouldn't have to give up much of value to get him. He'd instantly be a solid 3 for us.
That's how the Brewers got Durham last year The Brewers traded for Durham on July 20th. and Weathers this year. Weathers was only exposed to a handful of non-contenders before getting claimed by Milwaukee.
He could be claimed, and then traded to the team that claimed him You are correct. Perhaps my point was better stated as: The White Sox may indeed want him and be a good fit, but I find it unlikely that he'll make it through the entire NL and most of the AL unclaimed on waivers to get to the Sox in the first place. Trades in August aren't simply about determining who is a good fit and making a deal, especially for someone cheap and useful like Counsell this year.
The mere fact we are paying for nearly all of Bill Hall's salary for guy that will never likely to break AA is pretty bad as far as I'm concerned. I think the fact that he got another team to pay ANY of Hall's salary when they could have had him in a few days and paid absolutely nothing. It's practically a 1.3 million gift.
Let's face it, as good as Counsell's been there's absolutely no reason at his age he should be playing a month and a half of meaningless baseball. That's all well and good, but he still has to clear waivers. Considering his usefulness, I find that unlikely.
Reading through the archives, keeping both CC and Cameron were in the Brewers plans for 09 afterall It was widely speculated that since Cam and CC were good friends, that the Brewers were using that as extra leverage to try to get CC to stay here. I believe the Cam to the Yankees talk surfaced very quickly, almost right after they picked up his option (which as others mentioned, had to be a decision made quickly).
Why would Cashman even bother making such a proposal? Well, reports were that he was kind of a jerk to Melvin regarding the Cam/Cabrera trade, so I guess we shouldn't be surprised.
A lot of people are also forgetting that it was the Yankees that were dragging their feet on making the deal, not the Brewers. It's not simply a case of Melvin not pulling the trigger.
Why would anybody trade for Hall when they will be able to get him for league minimum in about 4 days? Beacause they could potentially get rid of a terrible contract of their own in the process.
Man alive, Tom really should have put his first name in the title. There's going to be lots of angry people thinking a deal for Doug Davis is in place.
DM and MA had said the pursued of CC was a special case I believe that was in regards to CC's own salary, not the overall payroll. Meaning, if they gave him 20 million, they'd have to shave 10 million off somewhere else. I'd have been stunned if they kept Cameron after signing CC to 20 million+ per year.
Re-signing Sabathia certainly means no Hoffman, probably no Cam, and possibly no Coffey. It really just would have shifted the problem with the 09 Brewers from the rotation back to the bullpen, their major weakness in 07 and 08, as well as add more issues with an already inconsistent lineup.
Granted, he's had success previously, but that's a lot of money to gamble on Harang bouncing back. Harang might simply benefit from getting away from pitching coach Dick Pole, who Todd Coffey credits with causing him to suck in his last two seasons with Cincy.
Yeah, pretty surreal. You're leaving State Fair with your family, you hear someone calling for help, and as you're dialing 911, the attacker runs up and attacks you. Sounds like he's doing ok at this point, fortunately.
Drop a bad contract, and pick up a worse one? Harang is actually still very useful at this point. Especially to the Brewers, who need pitching desperately. And there would almost certainly have to be equalization of the salaries as well.
In ESPN's defense, every time someone there goes to update online content for Milwaukee, they're probably surprised there are baseball teams other than the Cubs located in the Midwest.
They're fortunate to have Pitt linked to the project and championing for it- I get the feeling that if it was say, Jim Caviezel set to play Beane, this thing would have been shelved already.
JimH, I gotta add Major Hochstetter from Hogan's, too. Agreed- Hochstetter is my choice from HH. Siegfried - the original Get Smart Professor Moriarty- Sherlock Holmes Brett Favre- New York Jets Serpentor- GI Joe
They're making some really bad baseball teams look dominant against them right now. They need to win 5-7 in a row very soon, or they're completely done.
