  1. Adrian Gonzalez was DFAed. Albert Pujols will almost certainly be DFA at some point. The only reason A-Rod wasn't is the quiet deal he had with the Yankees to simply go away and be paid anyway. Any of those happening would have looked ludicrous at one time. The same people who are incredulous about the idea of Braun ever being DFA were probably the same ones who laughed at the idea some wanted of trading him back in 2013, which would now look like a very wise move in retrospect. Once great players can and do fall into that category if their performance falls off a cliff. Braun hasn't reached that point, no, but I don't think that's what the OP was implying.
  2. I can't believe people are this bothered by Perez getting one single start in CF with their top 2 outfielders unavailable. Braun has been below replacement level so far this year so perhaps Counsell wanted to give him a reset day. Or perhaps Braun told Counsell he needed a day, or Counsell doesn't want him going more than 5 straight. Or perhaps his career struggles against Carlos Martinez might have been a factor. Or a numbers of things. I don't know, but it's really not that big of a deal. Ryan Braun is just not the daily must-have in your lineup that he was in his 20s.
  3. I'm not worried about our pen at all. There's a lot of good arms in there already. Knebel will fortunately be back and Houser and Peralta could be factors as well. Williams hasn't even scratched the surface of what he could end up doing there. What would be a big help is scoring more than 3.3 runs per game,
  4. Spot on post. There was no excuse to sit Braun last night. Cain, of course. But Braun... no way. Put your best lineup out there and play ball. Perez doesn't belong out there unless it is emergency time and last night was not it. If Braun needs a maintenance day, he needs a maintenance day. We saw what happened last year and they're smart to take every necessary step to avoid that. He will need a lot of them. Braun's body does not care who else is already unavailable.
  5. They could have optioned Suter, then called Woodruff back up on the 17th which is the next time they need a 5th starter. That would have been an option as long as they're playing musical roster chairs anyway.
  6. I believe part of the reason for keeping Williams over Hoover was that if Pina needs a DL stint, they'll need to add Christian Bethancourt to the 40-man and Hoover was probably the low man on the 40-man totem pole. Assuming they wouldn't call up Nottingham instead. I would hope they would just call up Nottingham. It would be nice to give him a small look, plus he would probably be in line for 2 starts at most. Don't really like the idea of a 5th catcher for another spot that in 2 weeks would either be burning a 40 man spot or need to be DFAed.
  7. How so? Guerra was easily our best starter in 2016 and Torres was very successful in relief in 2016 as was Hughes in 2017. Drake has been kind of a wash as far as expectations go and obviously the jury is still out on Jennings and Miley. Sign enough of these guys and you're going to have your Milones and Gallardos and Hoovers, some just aren't going to pan out as many didn't in the Melvin era either. Now to the extent that I'd like to see less of these moves and more opportunities for our young live arms at the MLB level, I'd definitely agree with that. Maybe the fact that Williams is still here in their latest move shows that they are learning. This time last year they would have just optioned Williams, kept Hoover up and said "Depth."
  8. I get the Votto and Goldschmidt examples but both of them have been far better players than Braun the last 5 years. Both maintain fairly elite level play every year. Braun has not had an elite level season since 2012. He has two very good seasons since then and the rest he was an average player.
  9. No kidding. Logan Schafer, Kyle Heckathorn and Nick Bucci were some of our other top organizational prospects from that era. Top organizational prospect doesn't equal top prospect if the system stinks.
  10. I don't believe that Martinez hit Pina on purpose, but I find it kind of strange when I would have expected them to intentionally walk him anyway.
  11. I think the odds of Josh Hader turning into Chris Sale are much slimmer than we want to believe, certainly slim right now. Chris Sale is approaching generational pitcher status. That's a lofty expectation. He has three elite pitches, Hader has one, although his slider is getting close to that range too. I understand people's frustrations that he hasn't been tried, but I don't think it's silly. Long-term they may have a plan for making it happen, and that plan may involve him still pitching out of the pen this year. Maybe they want to refine and tune before they try him out starting again, and he wouldn't be the first. They may want him to work on his change -- finding that 3rd high end pitch may be the difference between him making it as a starter or being a career reliever. It's much easier for him to work on that in short stints in the pen than as a starter. They may want to make sure he's as developed for a starting role as possible before making that move. And if they move him before he's ready and it doesn't work and they choose to reverse course, it may be harder to go down that road again.
  12. Nice job Albers! I don't get why Counsell is so terrified to trust Taylor Williams, but failing that, I'm glad he stuck with Albers. Good to see this one go our way. Would have been a very tough one to drop.
  13. Perez sporting a sweet .154 OBP this season. Wait my bad, that's his OPS.
  14. LOL @ Matheny. There's a time and place to load the bases with an intentional pass and when your pitcher can't throw a strike that isn't the time.
  15. Not an enormous fan of giving up an out to a guy who can't find the zone at all especially with the bottom of the order coming up.
  16. Looked like he slipped or stumbled rounding the base. If he throws on the brakes, people are mad. If he goes for it and gets thrown out, people are mad at him and Sedar. Can't win I guess. I get what you are saying but I think 90% of us were thinking "gotta send him" there as he rounded 3rd. If it's bang bang and he loses, so be it. That was worst case scenario. It wasn't all like the other day when he sends Pina and he's about halfway down the line when the ball arrived at home.
  17. For sure, I fully expected this game to be over with bases loaded and no outs... Ok, who's left to pitch the 10th and beyond? Williams, Drake, Jennings
  18. Lol. A freaking carbon copy of the other day. Only the Brewers. It's what we all signed up for being fans of this team. All of the misery, none of the reward.
  19. I promised the other night to take a few days off from saying anything bad about Nerd. Fortunately he's making it easy to keep that promise tonight.
  20. I didn't say he's not still going to be good. I just meant he's going to need to find his velocity again at some point to long-term be as effective as he's been for us.
  21. Alright, choose your guy(s) to get us through 6 more outs. What I want: Hader for the 8th, Williams for the 9th What I expect: Hader for at least part of the 8th, then Barnes. Albers for the 9th
  22. Hader definitely isn't going to be the same guy for us if his fastball starts sitting in the low 90s instead of the high 90s. Hope this doesn't last long.
