  1. I've always felt that depth is kind of overrated unless it's quality depth. Brett Phillips is depth. Webb, Hoover, and Drake are/were just guys. There is always one of these guys you can just pluck off the street, you're not going to run out of relievers. Heck Dan Jennings was basically plucked off the street. You shouldn't be afraid of dumping someone like Drake who had plenty of chances to earn a spot here, just because you're worried about depth. Someone can always take his place regardless of who else is hurt now.
  2. What's keeping them from removing Chacin from the rotation? He's been demonstrably worse than Suter, and his slider profiles well in a bullpen role. Personally, I like Suter in the rotation better than Chacin. At least Suter has look competent at times this year. All Chacin has done is throw a ton of pitches and benefit from some quick hooks before getting shelled. I would say first historically, Suter has had more success in the pen and probably benefits from not seeing hitters 2-3 times per game. Second I would say realistically, they aren't going to give a guy 2 years and 16M to start and pull the plug on him as a starter after 4 starts.
  3. If you're not going to bring up Burnes/Peralta anytime soon, Suter seems like a no-brainer addition to the bullpen with his success there and struggles as a starter. Guerra and Woodruff both stay up, if you really want to find a spot for Miley when he comes back you can send the struggling one of Guerra or Woodruff down. Gives you another lefty for the pen too with Drake getting his long overdue DFA. Hader, Albers, Barnes, Jeffress, Williams, Suter, Jennings. Houser and Lopez can rotate in as an 8th man from time to time when the pen is gassed.
  4. Realmuto is a solid 3 WAR player. 3 x 9.16 (value per WAR) = 27.48 x 3 seasons of control = 82.44 million of value and I'd guess his arbitration earnings run somewhere around 16 million. 82-16 = 66 million and then multiply it by 0.972 since these last two weeks represented 2.78% of his remaining years of control. 64 million is a reasonable ask for the Marlins, I could see them being happy with 80% of that number but get below that and there is really no reason to move him. He isn't making a whole lot this season so it's not like he needs to be a part of a salary dump. I'd put the prospect surplus value of the named Brewer prospects as follows: -Woodruff = 17.86 million -Gatewood = 5.72 million -Supak = 5.72 million -Nottingham = 2.29 million Total = 31.59 million IMO that package is way short for a player like Realmuto. But at least you started with Woodruff which is a good enough name where it would catch the Marlin's attention. I'd listen to a revised package if you have one. Here's the problem I have with this kind of valuation: If you even peg Pina as a 1 WAR player, which seems entirely reasonable, that puts his surplus value at around $46M given 5 years control, so deducting arbitration and this year prorated still leaves him around $30M, which could balance this if you substitute Pina for Nottinham, which I would do but I doubt that moves the needle at all for the Marlins. I think the $9M per WAR estimate really needs to be revised after this last off-season.
  5. Three wins... Seems to happen to us a little more than occasionally. Getting swept by the Reds last September was devastating to our playoff hopes. We are 5-8 in our last 13 games against them, that won't cut it against bad teams if we expect to contend.
  6. Lopez at his best has really good stuff. He was a top prospect not all that long ago and like many guys fell apart in Colorado Spring. I get he should probably go back down but he's not comparable to Drake and you don't send him out the door with Drake when you can just option him.
  7. I am stunned by how often this team takes called third strikes with runners in scoring position and 2 outs. I mean, you'd think they'd know not to, it just seems incredibly stupid, and yet it happens over and over again. The most maddening part about it is that these are the same exact guys swinging out of their socks at pitches out of the zone down 5-0 with no one on. It's just incredible. You'd obviously assume Coles isn't the entire problem but the lineup plays like little leaguers and it never seems to matter who is in it.
  8. The one time you are pretty much okay with Domingo hacking away and praying with 2 strikes, because 9-4 is mildly more interesting but still not really competitive, and 9-7 is getting REALLY interesting, and the inning ends with the bat sitting on Santana's shoulders. Just the stuff you come to expect.
  9. Shutout all game until a relief pitcher knocks in 2. Only the Brewers.
  10. LOL, it's gonna be as long as he's in the pen. Also, I think speaking in absolutes doesn't do you any favors 22ks in 9.2 high leverage innings. If someone wants to argue that isn’t valuable that’s on them, not me. I really don't think anyone has or is arguing that Hader isn't valuable in the pen.
  11. Well, Drake isn't going to sleep much tonight. Don't feel too bad when you get DFAed tomorrow Oliver, you hung around and collected a check much longer than you should have.
  12. I believe 8. This would be 4 today. After 17 games.
  13. Heading under .500 for the first time this season after tonight, which frankly is long overdue with the trash product put on the field by this team so far this season.
  14. Let Drake wear it the rest of the game, then DFA him.
  15. I almost drove the 3 hours down to Milwaukee to go to this. Really glad I stayed home and saved my time and money.
  16. Nothing like a series at Miller Park to start getting the 2-13 Reds on track for the first time this season.
  17. You have 2 runs in scoring position and you're down 3. Hard to find a bigger spot than that. You can't always plan on saving your best PH options for big spots that are already here now and may never come later. With that said, I thought Sogard was an ok option as far as our limited options go since we insist on playing with 23-24 guys.
  18. That's why you have Choi on the 40. I would rather have Choi for 10 than Thames for 7 and 3 days of a man down, especially when you're going to be more likely to get Thames back at 100% and not 90. I'm higher on Thames than most, but you're not replacing Bryce Harper here. This is the whole point of having all this depth, it's not doing you any good in Colorado Springs.
  19. They had all those guys besides Yelich until recently and were still really hard to watch. It's a deeper problem than injuries. If the off-season plan for the offense was to strike out less, that plan hasn't resulted in more scoring, that's for sure.
  20. Maybe swinging out of our socks at every pitch isn't the greatest approach. Let's try something else.
  21. Reds were one of the main reasons we didn't make the playoffs last year. They need to do better than this against the cellar dwellers. If you're going to be patting yourself on the back for going. 500 against a tough stretch, you damn well better be able to make up ground on the easy stretches.
  22. I just can't stand watching Suter pitch other than the fact he works fast. He is so incredibly hittable. If you want to make him the long man, fine. But you've got a top 100 prospects in Woodruff and Burnes, and Freddy Peralta has done nothing to indicate he isn't right there too. Suter just doesn't belong in this rotation at all.
  23. George Kottaras once did that with the Brewers in the old Marlins stadium I remember. So Harper is in elite company with Frank Thomas and George Kottaras #KottarasForHallOfFame Rare but it happens. Justin Upton, Mark Texiera, Chris Davis, Barry Bonds...
