  1. Diplan is another guy on the 40 that is very intriguing. The future of this bullpen is really bright and I expect the 8 man pen to be our standard now going forward. The most fun thing about ST to me is seeing our young pitching prospects in action. Loved watching Burnes yesterday and Williams today.
  2. Between that, and Orf, and Santana yesterday, and a couple other plays I'm probably forgetting, the defense has been awful. I mean, it's spring, no big deal, but it's been hideous.
  3. Probably right. Having some depth and injury insurance in Colorado Springs isn't the worst thing in the world. In hindsight they were smart not to keep him down for 20 days last year or whatever the limit is and preserved that last option.
  4. I'm going to be really disappointed if Taylor Williams doesn't make the opening day roster, especially if someone like Oliver Drake does.
  5. Nice swing by Broxton taking Ohtani yard. I'm honestly a little worried we are going to trade Broxton for basically nothing and he's going to turn into a 25/25 gold glove CFer elsewhere. It would not take much more than him getting back to his 2016 form defensively and cutting his K rate to 30% or so for that to happen.
  6. Feels like the offense is right in midseason form already with all of the blown scoring chances with a runner on 3rd and less than 2 out in the first 24 hours of spring.
  7. And none of it would have happened if the Mets didn't nix the original trade for Gomez.
  8. Which potential reliever do you see as having the best chance to come in for our MLB pen and possibly make a big Hader-like impact in our pen as early as this season? My vote would be for Williams. Among the best stuff in the system, upper 90s fastball, and we saw some of that last September. By the way, I listed these 4 because they seem like the most obvious candidates, but feel free to list someone else if you've got a different one in mind.
  9. Dubon had a really nice 2016 season - had an OPS of .840. But that has been the outlier - so yes, I agree it's too high. The bat that we saw last year likely won't play as a starter in the majors. As you say, I see him as a utility guy. Nothing wrong with that - I just don't think future utility guys rate that high on the prospect scale. There's still a chance the guy fills in a bit physically and develops a little extra pop, but at age 23, that time is coming quickly. Or perhaps he makes some adjustments at the plate that tap into some more power. I certainly hope so, but I'm not counting on it. Also, any rankings (while obviously being subjective), are a balance of floor and ceiling. Some prospects earn their ranking on a high ceiling and upside, others earn it on a safe MLB floor. The real elite prospects, while still not being a 'sure' thing, have the best of both worlds -- which is part of the reason I think Brett Phillips is underrated as a prospect. Which is a better prospect, the toolsy guy in A ball with above average starter potential, or the guy at the higher levels with a lower ceiling? Its a subjective balance. Dubon, should, at worst have a future in the big leagues as a Cesar Izturis type utility infielder. Which isn't very exciting, but he does have a higher floor than some prospects above him.
  10. Not directing this at you specifically, but this is a lot easier to say for those of us who aren't signing the check. If I'm the one paying for the richest contract in franchise history, I'm definitely going to be concerned about the return on my investment. Arrieta definitely increases our odds at a WS, but he far from guarantees it. Say we sign Arrieta for 5/125. How confident is everyone that cumulatively over the next 5 years, Arrieta outproduces Corbin Burnes or even Brandon Woodruff?
  11. Yes. But you have to have the Blue or Blue+Orange subscription and you have to live in their broadcast region. You should get the Brewers on the FSN alternate channel, they show the Twins on FSN North.
  12. We have someone in our system named Jake Hager, apparently. Edit: Heck, he was a 1st round pick, apparently.
  13. I still expect them to add to their rotation, but I'm wondering if they are just really really high on Corbin Burnes and expect him to be a regular part of the rotation by midseason. Maybe Stearns figures he's going to be as good as any FA starter out there and figures why drop a 9 figure contract on one. They might be figuring on adding both Nelson and Burnes in June. The roster logjam is a little bit irritating to me, but I do have faith in Stearns that there's going to be a resolution before the season. I liked the Yelich trade and the Cain signing, but I liked Cain more under the premise that we were going to be able to get something fair for Santana. The current roster structure and everything we have to do to make it work -- Braun plays ...1st? Santana RF? Thames plays when...? Aguilar fits...nowhere? Broxton/Phillips in AAA? Just doesn't really make a lot of sense. As loaded as our bench and AAA depth looks, it just isn't very efficient to have productive starters in AAA or on the bench every day -- or traded for pennies on the dollar. But like I said, I'm still confident Stearns will handle it.
  14. It only took 1 inning of ST to sum up Domingo Santana in a nutshell. Rips a double to the gap. Let's a lazy fly drop right in front of him.
  15. I know it's kind of not really talked about because we are at the point now of the 'what can we do but try to make it work?' stage of the relationship with Braun, but he is such a terrible fit for this team right now in almost every way. 1) If he were gone it would pretty much solve the roster logjam as Santana could play RF, Thames and Aguilar could platoon at 1st and Phillips would stay as a top notch 4th OFer with plenty of PT. 2) His presence is going to force us to keep productive players off the roster. Like Aguilar for probably nothing. Or perhaps Phillips to Colorado Springs. 3) He doesn't really fit from either a versatility standpoint or the new defense first philosophy in the organization. He might be able to play 1st, remains to be seen but right now it just looks like playing Scooter in the OF last spring, doing it because we are kind of forced to try. 4) His salary, while not a disaster, is an overpay in this market and pretty much eliminates the chance of trading him to the 1 or 2 places he might want to go. While some say his contract doesn't prevent us from making moves now, that was a lot more true when we were at a $60M payroll than now at $90. Right now an Arrieta type deal would probably pretty much max us out, instead of having the flexibility to do both that and maybe also go for Walker and Lucroy too. 5) We don't have the DH. It's a shame. Here's hoping he stays healthy and has a nice career resurgence now and fits somewhere defensively because it looks like at this point he's going to be here 3 more years.
  16. I get what Brew is saying. Perhaps Stearns has told Mark A. that Arrieta is a guy they want if they can fit it into their budget. Mark A. is the one writing the checks, so at the end of the day he has to be comfortable with the contract. So it could just be a matter of Mark A. and Boras exchanging figures.
  17. I agree with no one being off limits but I'm not moving Hader for those names. I'd need the level of Syndergaard or Bumgarner to be talked into moving Hader.
  18. Wow, that's a bargain for the Rays.
  19. You know who would be a Dallas Maverick if Cuban just trusted his GM? Giannis Antetokounmpo.
  20. For the people who use fitness trackers, what do you use and do you like it? I had a Fitbit One which went missing a couple weeks ago and judging by my last activity that it tracked it isn't around where I'm going to find it again. I thought about just replacing it directly but they seem fairly outdated and hard to find now. Thought about a Blaze, and thought about going cheap and just trying something basic like the Jawbone. My job can be physically demanding at times and any tracker that clips on will always be a possible risk for getting snagged off, so I would prefer to stay away from more expensive ones this time. Really all I'm looking for is something that can track steps and distance with decent accuracy and sync to a mobile app.
  21. I'm kind of with TJ on this one. I get that it is Mark's right and all, but this is the kind of thing that I had hoped was disappearing when Stearns replaced Melvin, and this is not a very good sign that it has. I trust Stearns not to be swayed by emotion and fan pressure. I don't really have that kind of faith in Mark A. Mark is the owner and going to do what he wants. I get that he has a say and that's fine. But I wish he would defer all agent inquiries to his GM and assistant GM. Boras is far too busy to waste his time with someone that isn't calling shots. If he's having more contact with Mark A. than he is with Stearns I can't help but wonder who is really making the personnel decisions.
  22. Based on what I know about reilly, info like this isn't out of left field. For sure. Reilly has been around here, and seems to be one of the most level-headed and respected posters around. If he's got something, I'm for sure listening. And I say that with no intent to downplay or take anything away from anyone else that might have a source.
  23. The thing that bothers me about forcing room for Braun at 1st is that he is really unlikely to outproduce who he is replacing Thames OPSed .918 vs. RHP and Aguilar OPSed .902 vs LHP. They combined for 46 HR. That's a really good platoon, I don't think even the ones the most optimistic on Braun expect him to match that. If we were replacing Lyle Overbay 2.0 I'd be excited, but I don't see an upgrade.
  24. He also said a few weeks ago that Santana was going to be traded to an AL team. I'm not saying he's definitely not credible or anything, just pointing out, stuff changes all the time. If I had to guess I'd say Yelich, Cain and Braun aren't going anywhere, and with Braun that's only because of the NTC. Anyone else would not surprise me in the least if they were dealt.
  25. You want to headline a deal with a 22 year old first baseman that hit no home runs in 51 A ball games? I would hope we aren't basing any decisions about anything off of 51 A ball games.
