  1. Amen. I can't wait for the first shocked look on a batter's face the first time a slow curve that lands near the dirt is called a strike because it crossed at the bottom of the zone even though it's just been called wrong for years. People say it's going to take a lot of nuance out of the game, but it's also going to add other nuances.
  2. Why not? I mean, if you have the ability and technology to call the game with 99.999% accuracy, why would you settle for 90? What makes sense about that? There is no way to improve the current system so it is more accurate, at least not substantially. As long as you have humans calling the zone there will be human error. I'm sure the zone wasn't being called markedly better 5 years ago, it just sticks out more now because everyone is aware of the technology and how often they actually are getting the call wrong.
  3. Yeah I'm worried that Santana's defense will always limit his upside. It's hard to imagine that he was ever deemed suitable enough for CF.
  4. Reds split in Chicago. I suppose despite my anguish at them blowing that lead, lol, a split in Chicago is all you can ask for.
  5. Wishful thinking, in my opinion. Broxton could be a valuable "add-in" on a trade though 250 BA, .325 OBP, 800+ OPS, 27 HR, 27 SB Holy smokes, if a 27 year old C.F. with those numbers and 5 years control isn't even worth a top 100 and is nothing more than an add-on, you had better hold.
  6. God I hate the Reds. Up 9-0 on the Cubs. I blink and it's 9-9.
  7. While it's true there is no guarantee on either Brinson or Phillips, the fact is they need the opportunity to show it one way or another in 2018. Another year behind Broxton won't afford enough opportunities. Now they could keep Broxton and Phillips and deal Brinson, who likely has the most value of the three anyway. Brinson should not be untouchable for the right return. But they can't keep both Brinson and Broxton, unless they deal Santana, which isn't out of the question but not likely either. I would propose that the Brewers start the 2018 season with either Brinson or Phillips as the starting CF. Whichever of them wins the job in Spring Training. The other is the 4th outfielder. You keep Broxton in the organization either in AAA or as a 5th Outfielder. I mean that quite seriously because after 250-300 At-Bats if neither Brinson or Phillips show they can hit MLB pitching you gotta go with Broxton then If we're going on the hypothetical scenario in the OP, there's no way you can justify a 27/27 .800 OPS centerfielder as a 5th OFer or in AAA. You either have to trade him or roll with him. JMO
  8. Broxton is quietly up to a 1.2 WAR, which puts him within half a win of any regular on our team besides Shaw and Pina. If those were his final numbers I'm guessing he'd be comfortably over 2 at season's end. If he did finish with an .800 OPS and even 25/25, those are substantial numbers in CF that would justify a substantial return especially when it comes with low cost and control. I'd be open to trading him, but it would take a substantial return, something like Broxton + Garza for a similar package to what we got for Gomez + Fiers. I'd trade him for the right offer, but not simply for the sake of freeing up CF for Brinson in 2018. Failing that, I'd be willing to go into 2018 again with Broxton as our CF and Brinson in AAA and pushing Brinson's service time back again. I still believe Brinson is our CF of the future. I also still believe Broxton gives us a better chance in 2018.
  9. The only way I can see them going 6-3 is if they somehow sweep the Giants and take 2 of 3 against the Rockies. I don't see them winning more than a game in LA especislly if Kershaw returns that series. At least we'll miss MadBum.
  10. Wild freaking pitch with 2 out wins it for the Cubs. Thanks Blake Wood.
  11. Broxton won't clear waivers for one. At 500K someone would probably claim him. Even if McCutchen cleared it's not a strict rental, there's a pretty reasonable option year next year so they would want more. Plus there's something about trading a guy for Jason Rogers and then trading your franchise player to get him back that probably would not be a great PR move with the fans. Nice idea but there's a few reasons this wouldn't work.
  12. Just glancing at yesterdays IGT there wasn't a single post in yesterday's GT criticizing the umpiring. Perhaps the game threads that are the most critical of the umpiring are the games with very bad umpiring. No, not every bad call gets brought up. Not even close. In any event like Brew mentioned it's a legitimate gripe that reflects people's real time reactions. IGTs are nothing more than the Web equivalent of a group of folks sitting around watching their favorite team and expressing their real time reactions. As long as everything is within the fan forum etiquette I don't see the big deal. I personally think the criticisms of BA get old and tiresome, but I don't tell people to stop whining about him because to some people that is a problem. I just generally choose not to participate in those discussions or express my own disagreement with it.
  13. To be fair...i have complained on both sides. But in response that it's the same treatment...it isn't. I've posted the link to the study a few times. The Brewers are in the bottom 3rd and negative in strikes called for them. Like negative 100...whereas the Dodgers were like plus 240 strike calls...through June only. It's clear strike zones are influencing games. If you want to believe it or not is up to you. So, the umps ARE out to get us then? Over the course of a season, some teams benefit much more from bad strike zones than others. I'm not saying umpires are out to get us or attempting to explain it in any other way than simply saying that is a fact. I really don't understand what it is about that, that you and Doc don't believe or understand.

It's clear strike zones are influencing games. If you want to believe it or not is up to you. Exactly Stout. Over a long enough timeline, a few decades or so, I'm guessing this stuff would pretty much even out. Over 1 seaaon, it doesn't. People assume it does and it's cliche to say it all evens out, but it's just not true. Thus my earlier comment that these guys are influencing pennant races.
  15. Shaw rung up on a ball. Can't believe this is OK with some of you.
  16. Nope, wrong, and again, there have been references cited as to why this is wrong and it doesn't all 'even out'. Never said the umps are 'out to get us', turbo. I'm less mad at the actual umpires than the system that continues to rely on human error to decide these races when they have the technology to get these calls right. Bell should have struck out, not scored. It's not that complex.
  17. That 0-2 pitch to Stewart wasn't a strike, but Cole has been getting that call all game.
  18. Santana moves around like a dinosaur out there in right. Just so slow. And Bell should have struck out 4 pitches earlier and instead is standing on 3rd with nobody out. The poor job these umpires do is affecting games and pennant races, folks. Plain and simple.
  19. And now the first pitch from Swarzak a clear strike called a ball. I want to punch this umpire in the face.
  20. Vogt looks like a 50 year old history professor in that picture .
  21. Can't wait for machines. These guys have gotten so bad. This guy loves the high and outside ones.
