  1. And Aguilar's mistake might cost us a game. Just too hard to tell enough to overturn this
  2. Uecker: "Cole has been on that outside corner all day. Or trying to be." Why not? When you are getting strike calls 3-4 inches off the outside corner with consistency, you might as well take it.
  3. I'm still a bit annoyed that Perez didn't come in and make a play on that single that dropped in front of him and made it 3-0. I know it wasn't an easy play but with 2 out and a runner at 3rd that's a time to go for it. If he comes up with it it's our lead and the complexion of the game changes . Situational baseball.
  4. Broxton has hit oppo HRs on both of the last 2 pitches he's seen.
  5. Welcome back, 2nd half Jimmy. Hoped you weren't coming back this year. Can't believe Perez couldn't run in and make a play on that one though.
  6. I actually think the irrational hate for Broxton this year surpasses the hate for Villar. Broxton has been easily a better player than Villar this year by pretty much any statistical measure and yet to some he is the one that is garbage and shouldn't be seeing the lineup. He's going to be (pacewise) a 20/20 centerfielder with about a .740 OPS and 1.5 WAR, so if he's largely considered a disappointment for that I'd like to see what he does in a year where he isn't a disappointment.
  7. Iglesias very nearly blew the save for the Reds. Cubs cut the deficit to 2-1 with runners on 1st and 3rd before he recovered to strike out Jay and Avila to end it.
  8. I think given the matchup, Counsell just wanted to load up with as many lefties in the lineup as possible, especially when he's been swinging a hot bat. I doubt it will become a regular thing. He wasn't overmatched in CF so he did his job there and Broxton gave us a great AB with the insurance run off the bench. Happy with both today.
  9. Justin Wilson has been pretty bad for the Cubs. Love it.
  10. These words prove prophetic! The Cubs are not going to win the Central easily. Call it a hangover, the league figuring out those hot rookies or Maddon going senile. As you know, except for the Reds, the Central is basically a .500 division. Are any of us going to beat the Nationals and then the Dodgers??? Probably not. But someone will get a shot at the Nationals. The Rockies and Diamondbacks seem to be holding fairly steady for the 2 WC spots. I think assumptions of the Rockies' demise may have been exaggerated a bit. Barring a total collapse by either I think it's division or bust for everyone in the Central.
  11. Walker is probably going to cost around a 3 year deal for $15M a year or so. To me there's better use of our resources especially with our 2B depth on the farm. I'd rather give Villar one more shot in 2018 and use the money elsewhere. Swarzak at maybe 2/$10M or 2/$12M is something I would be interested in, but I really have no idea what his market will be.
  12. That 2-0 strike call to Sogard was absolutely horrible. Not even close.
  13. not at all true. Man, tough crowd. Think he was just saying it tongue in cheek.
  14. Swarzak isn't a very good comp to Walker. The reliever market is already a very separate entity from the position player market, but in addition to that, Walker's salary is a major hit to his surplus value, if he even has any. Swarzak had no such issue. Jay Bruce, who was acquired for basically nothing, is a lot more comparable to Walker in terms of salary, contract, and value.
  15. Broxton has a .243/.349/.459/.808 line since returning. If he gave us that with solid defense consistently I'm sure we would take that.
  16. Twitter chatter is worthless. There's no way it's Freddy Peralta or Gatewood. I wouldn't totally discount it being Nottinghamm if they don't really see him as a real prospect anymore and are on the fence about protecting him from the Rule 5, but I'd be more inclined to believe it's someone most of us have barely even heard of. Not one team claimed Walker for his remaining $5M price tag. If we had there's a good chance the Mets would have let us take him for nothing as a straight salary dump. There's no way we gave up a prospect along the lines of Freddy Peralta just to save a million bucks on a 1 and a half month rental. Its not like we couldn't afford to eat the salary. The portion the Mets are picking up is just a reflection of Walker not being worth a prorated $18M.
  17. Holy smokes did they ever need one of these kinds of finishes to finally go our way.
  18. I'll take any sort of a walkoff. HBP, walk, passed ball, balk, grand slam. Anything will do.
  19. Just can't get that big signature late inning hit. Time to put that dazzling extra inning record on the line.
  20. avoid DP type of move. Faster runner less likely to hit into the DP. Still pretty baffling to me. Typical ground ball the runner at 1st is going to be thrown out no matter who it is. It's more about the speed of the batter staying out of it. Strange strategy to me. Not sure it is worth removing Shaw from the game.
  21. [sarcasm]I'm sure it's just a total coincidence that you're at one end of at least half the pissing matches that happen here.[/sarcasm]
