  1. I dunno, Rock said several times that basically Wily hasn't pitched much because he's stunk when he does, and BA even said something like Wily has got to be feeling like the end is near .
  2. Down huge and some of these guys are up there trying to hit a 7 run HR rather than just keep getting on base.
  3. Well time to go into 'hopefully the Cubs lose too' mode, but I'm not betting on it.
  4. I've said all along if you want to trial Wily in the pen, give him one inning for now, just throw his best stuff for 15-20 pitches and sit him. I have absolutely no idea if it would have worked because Counsell never let us find out, he just threw him in whenever as the garbage man/long man and totally defeated the purpose of the pen move. I'm guessing this was his the end of the line for him here. But someone is going to give him a shot.
  5. Since we're down 6 and counting maybe Counsell will be willing to risk letting Josh Hader into a game.
  6. What a laugher this has turned into. Another gem at home.
  7. In my honest opinion you are way overexaggerating the potential pitfalls here. If the Brewers had gone into the year with this plan they would not have abandoned it after Guerra's short start. Why would they need their SP8 to go 7 innings on Opening Day with a 4 man pen that hasn't even been used yet? They would get 4-5 from their SP8, then 2-3 from their pen, which isn't that big of a deal, and likely in the next day or two they could get a full day from their piggyback and get a day off. As I mentioned there could be flexibility in certain situations. Suppose you have a day off, or can get through 6 in 80 pitches. It doesn't need to be a hard 3-5 innings every time. And I'd have no problem using Knebel in the 4th inning to get out of a bases loaded jam with nobody out in a tie game. Is it going to go perfectly with robot like precision every time? Of course not. It doesn't go that way now with the current model. We learned that with Woodruff just last week. Teams make contingencies and sometimes roster moves to adjust and go from there. It doesn't mean that the whole thing can't work, any more than the current traditional model probably seemed laughable 40 years ago.
  8. You just can't help using Wily for that 2nd inning, can you Craig?
  9. Exactly, his FIP lines up with his ERA. Which isn't a great ERA. If he had a 4.50 ERA and a 3.00 FIP, I'd be more of a believer. I'm not saying he is Wes Obermueller bad. I'm just saying his supposed resurgence this year has long since passed.
  10. I can't wait to hear again about how solid Garza is if you just remove his 8 worst starts and just he's just so unlucky . I get the annoyance with the seeing eye hits, that part is unlucky, but his starts are trending in the wrong direction again, and his now 4.42 ERA for the year suggests he's still the same mediocre starter he was the last 2 years.
  11. The walks hurt, it was partly self induced, but good job working out of further damage . That had a chance to get ugly quickly.
  12. Does Rock need to complain after every close 3-2 pitch taken for Ball 4 that hitters just don't protect with 2 strikes like they did back in his day? Garza pretty clearly missed the inside corner with that.
  13. We could be anywhere from 2 to 10 games in front of the Pirates after this series. Talk about a swing. Here's hoping we are at least 8, need to take 3 out of 4.
  14. Wang also pitches in the harshest minor league environment there is. Regardless, it doesn't matter whether he can come close to that number. What matters is whether or not he can be better than Drake.
  15. Yeah at first glance I got a little scared looking at that list, but going through it again it's really not that bad. Dubon is a no brainer and Peralta should probably be added too. Nottinghamm and Wilkerson are probably iffy depending on the rest of the year goes, and they might consider adding Cooper after this year. After those 5 there's no one I'm overly concerned with risking .
  16. Yeah, I keep waiting for the other shoe to drop. I probably won't really fully believe unless the calendar turns to September and we're in 1st. Call it 2014 syndrome, or whatever. However, this season has been more fun regardless because there were no expectations for it.
  17. K% Vs LHB Drake 25.3% vs. MLB hitters Wang 12.5% vs. AAA hitters Im going to speculate that David Stearns disagrees with your conclusion. Lefties are also hitting. 257 against Drake with a .705 OPS. Wang's K's are down, but lefties are hitting only .159 against him this year. There's more to getting lefties out than just a higher K rate.
  18. Would be nice if Susac was doing anything at all in AAA to push Bandy for that 2nd spot. But he's not.
  19. And I do want to reiterate that I do generally like Counsell as a manager, I just disagree with much of his bullpen management. I know it's not just him. Many managers if the game is hanging in the balance tend to gravitate toward the proven option over the unknown option, even if the proven option is just proven to suck. I have no idea why that is.
  20. After the last stink fest by the pen I'm starting to lean more toward the DFA crowd on a few of these guys. I had hope for Drake, but he can go. He's terrible against righties, and the one thing he does sort of well, get lefties out, is something we have no reason to think Wang wouldn't be better at, who should be his direct replacement. Torres can join Drake, that's about all I have to say about him. I'm OK with just waiting another outing or two on Peralta, but he's on wafer thin ice. And for God's sake stop having him try to throw multiple innings if you want to try to make this work. Otherwise, you might as well go ahead and DFA him. At least some good has come out of patience with these guys as Hughes has been pitching much better as of late and should be pretty safe for now. The minors options are still there -- Lopez, Blazek, perhaps even Archer or Wilkerson. Espino in the pen doesn't make a lot of sense to me. He seems like your classic AAAA emergency 6th starter. There are better options for pen help, not that Counsell will be wilung to use them. Which, on that note with a guy like Hader, I'd be a little ticked if I was Stearns. Not only is Hader not being used to help, but he's not being developed.
  21. They've brought in replacements. Replacements don't do much good if Counsell isn't willing to use them. Disagree. Hader and Espino are the only two "replacements." Three bums still remain. Torres has a 4.95 ERA Drake has a 5.59 ERA Peralta has a 6.66 ERA All three should be DFA'd immediately. But the two replacements were available and Counsell still went with the bums. That part is on him.
  22. Pretty good day on the farm, with the exception of the Rattlers who have been on an incredibly bad run. 26-42, weren't they. 500 not all that long ago?
  23. I do think it'll happen at some point, but it'll have to be an organizational movement, not just one manager's idea IMO. I am totally open to hearing the cons of why this wouldn't work too, I just don't like the idea of rejecting a new baseball idea just because it was radical (this is not directed at you, just saying in general). Baseball has evolved many times over the years with many changes that were at various points in time deemed too radical to ever work. Heck, I don't believe the 5 man rotation even became the norm until the 90s (going solely off memory there).
  24. Was Hardy really that good? I recall him being pretty sure handed but really lacking in range. Far better than a guy like Yuni B of course.
