  1. Perez has grown on me a lot. I've never liked low OBP guys and I don't think he'll ever be more than. 300 or so there, but I've started to more appreciate the benefits he can have beyond that. I think he can be a 3 WAR or so supersub who can give serviceable to good defense at any position and that's a very valuable player. The only ones I would disagree with are those who want to find a permanent position for Perez -- I think that would deprive him of a lot of his value. Then he's just an ok everyday player who can't get on base much. The supersub aspect is a lot of his value.
  2. I don't think the Cubs being down 3-1 in the World Series last year is a very good case for them not being that good. I do agree there's an element of luck to them winning 103, but there's also been an element of bad luck for them to be under . 500 right now. They are still a very talented team due for some positive regression to the mean and we are kidding ourselves if we think they are going to hover around . 500 all year. Their starting pitching is without a doubt their biggest question mark, but they have both the prospects and money to do something about it, and I have no doubt we will. None of this is me saying we can't or won't do it. Do I think the odds are still very much against us, yes, but I don't think many of us would even have put us in this position in June. We have plenty of internal improvements we can make as well, particularly with the bullpen and outfield. But we'll have to start picking it up a notch to be in this all the way.
  3. I generally like Counsell but he does things at times that drive me nuts. There's no reason not to PR Brinson there. Is Brinson any faster than Santana? He's 24 for 35 since 2016 season. 7/12 this year. None of that elicits pinch runner status. One of Brinson's tool set that made him attractive to us was his potential as a 30/30 player. No, 24 for 35 isn't great. Yes, he is faster than Santana. Santana has 12 steals in his career.
  4. It's June. Less than halfway through the season. I'm not saying they have no shot but a 2 game division lead in June is totally meaningless. Whether you compare the Cubs to last year or not it's very evident they're underachieving and will likely go on a run at some point.

  6. Wow what a horrible strike one call to Thames. Way to help the pitcher out blue.
  7. He hasn't been THAT bad this year. I mean he hasn't been great by any means but sometimes the way he's described you'd think he has been just a train wreck this year.
  8. Unfortunately if this lead holds up, Thames in left will loom large tonight. Hopefully Counsell will learn from this. Especially with Brinson and Phillips up there is no need for Thames to play in LF at all.
  9. Cravy has a 5.26 ERA in AAA. I know it's a tough environment and you can't be sure how it will translate but there's nothing special about Cravy. He doesn't have a Knebel arm or even a Barnes arm.
  10. I predict that Franklin isn't going to survive the wave of roster returns when Shaw, Villar and Braun all are back.
  11. You're sure reading a lot into a simple comment to tell him to calm down. Anyway things looked a little nerve wracking after that first AB but he did a great job settling down and finishing the inning with a K had to feel good. Dad sure was pumped.
  12. Oh yeah, booing Diamondback fans, the guy is making his first MLB appearance and decided to start throwing beanballs against his first hitter. Idiots.
  13. Too bad Broxton slipped out of the box or he legs that out. He needs something to get him going again.
  14. I'm not even mad at Thames, he's doing the best he can, he's just not an outfielder. He's going to get hurt out there if he isn't already. I understand they want to get Aguilar in there but that's not the answer. Thames shouldn't be more than an emergency outfielder.
  15. Thames has absolutely no business playing the outfield. I'm a little tired of seeing an organization loaded with outfielders continue to play guys in left who aren't outfielders like the defense doesn't matter there.
  16. Gotta think we see Hader tonight for at least an inning. D'Backs have quite a few lefties in the lineup, especially if Guerra doesn't make it past 5.
  17. Sometimes it's better to be lucky than good -- and Junior definitely got lucky that inning. We'll take it.
