  1. I know Phillips is amped, but that throw needs to come in to 2nd. Mistake.
  2. Did the ump seriously just call a pitch right down the middle a ball? Giving several inches off the corner all night, but right down the middle is a ball?
  3. Nick Franklin is the one position player on this team that screams 'Why haven't I been DFAed yet?'
  4. Good thing we got those two in the 1st because the bats look very inept tonight.
  5. Maybe Pennington will be the next Thornburg a few years from now and we can flip him back to Dembrowski for a similar haul.
  6. Happy for Phillips, this is a long time coming for him, even if it's most likely going to just be a cup of coffee. Well ok not a real long time coming, just feels like it after last year. With a righty on the mound tonight, and Shaw on paternity, no reason not to have Perez at 3rd and Phillips starting in left, wouldn't you think ?
  7. There's plenty of options for opening a roster spot for a guy that under any circumstances would likely have one in September. That being said, Hader only was used for 2 innings and could be ready by Thursday as well. Hader they are pretty much grooming for a pen role this year so he doesn't make much sense for Thursday either unless they want to try to cover the whole game with bullpen by committee. I agree Woodruff will probably have a roster spot by September, but it doesn't make much sense to DFA a guy now just for one start for Woodruff, unless they plan to somehow keep him up in the rotation .
  8. Listed doesn't mean much at this point, the game is 8 hours away and they probably want to see how Garza feels today first. If Garza goes on the DL and Espino still makes his start tonight then I'd agree they have something else in mind.
  9. He didn't misquote the rulebook. Rule 7.08 (e) Any runner is out when he fails to reach the next base before a fielder tags him or the base
  10. And that speaks more to the depth of our system than anything. Coca is probably a borderline top 20 in many systems.
  11. Didn't we just literally quote the rulebook, which uses the reverse language regarding the ball and the runner and who must beat what? And once again, I am just giving you a literal quote from a MLB Umpire Crew Chief (at the time of the interview) of how the rule is interpreted and pointing out that they do NOT interpret it as a tie going to the runner.
  12. I'm not sure, I'm just saying and pointing out that regardless of what anyone's interpretation to the rule is, and I agree there's a gray area open to interpretation, MLB and the officials do not interpret the rule as 'tie goes to the runner.' So we can't say that we got screwed if a 50/50 call goes against us. Obviously we'd like to see SOME 50/50 calls go our way and not always be against us, but on it's own I didn't see anything right or wrong answer on the Shaw call and nothing to overturn it either way .
  13. I agree with you. Baseball is mostly a game of individual performances. Chemistry is necessary at times between a pitcher and catcher, and fielders should know what their responsibilities are as well as the guys around them, but I don't know how much either of those has to do with leadership. It's not like youngster Santana is going to come up to bat and try harder to hit a HR because of a passionate speech Thames gave him. Leadership in baseball is necessary to the extent that if Villar gets thrown out trying to steal 3rd with 2 outs twice in a week, someone needs to tell him to cut it out, probably the manager. But that's about it. I'd disagree with this. Leadership in baseball is very different than in football or basketball. But its still necessary. You have 30+ guys (over the course of a season) that play 162 games, travel with each other, practice together, etc... You still need leaders in the team to keep guys pushing and giving their best. The season is a grind and good leaders are there to make sure the each individual is still giving their all. I think if you look at each WS team, you are going to find certain people that are leaders of the clubhouse. People don't give their best in a divided clubhouse. But that's about the extent of leadership in baseball. You need a leader to make sure your guys are playing hard for 162 games. That's about it. It's a game of individual performances .
  14. Before he is out, and he is out only when the ball beats him to the bag, therefor, heretofore, henceforth, et Al. a tie goes to the runner. From the MLB.com website straight from crew chief Tim McClellan: There are no ties and there is no rule that says the tie goes to the runner. But the rule book does say that the runner must beat the ball to first base, and so if he doesn't beat the ball, then he is out. So you have to make the decision. That's why umpires are paid the money they are, to make the decision on if he did or if he didn't. The only thing you can do is go by whether or not he beat the ball. If he did, then he is safe. http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/official_info/umpires/feature.jsp?feature=mcclellandqa
  15. Sorry folks, that's on me. Bummer. He could still get the call, though. The theory is sound, if they need to DL Garza it doesn't make sense to bring up Espino tomorrow.
  16. Makes total sense to me ...heres hoping...
  17. 2019 bullpen: Hader (yes, he's going to wind up in the pen, sorry.) Knebel Barnes Taylor Williams Bickford Medeiros ? Hang in there, help is on the way...
  18. Agreed that they are likely grooming Hader for the pen, no matter what they are saying .
  19. Man, what a spiral in the last 12 months for Jorge Lopez.
  20. But that's in direct contradiction with the 2nd part of it that says the runner must touch the base before he is out, not at the same time, to acquire the right to it. Ergo, there are no ties. Of course in the real world there are plays that are too close to call with either the maked eye or even slow motion review in which case they'll call it whatever way they think they saw it and stick to it. But as far as MLB is concerned they never tie.
  21. So, the tie goes to the runner, unless called otherwise on the field, in which case the replay will uphold the tie going to whatever is called on the field. We've been screwed by replay and/or 50/50 calls upheld at least 6 times in the last 2 weeks. Nothing about that definition indicates that a tie is supposed to go to the runner.
  22. Is this from TH? Counsell? Both. TH asked Craig after the game, said Garza feels awful, like he was in a car crash. If he's going to miss even one start no reason not to DL him. His starts line up with Woodruff, so we can dream, but I'd bet highly on it being Espino.
  23. Sounds highly likely that Garza is headed to the DL.
