  1. I wouldn't be opposed to both Williams and Hader being in the pen at some point this year. I'm not opposed to multi inning relief, but some guys are only suited to work an inning. Peralta may be one of those guys. He's struggled in that second inning of relief. I'd limit him to one for the time being. I'm surprised to see Drake still has a 3.48 FIP and 11 K/9. Maybe there's still hope for him, I don't know. He's got very strange splits despite being a right, he dominates lefty hitting and can't get righties out. For the time being, he's our LOOGY. I'm all about using Knebel and even Barnes wherever necessary in high leverage situations whether it be the 7th or 9th. You don't need to put in your closer for a save with a 3 run lead in the 9th and the bottom of the order coming up, Scahill or Peralta will do just fine, just be ready to warm up Knebel if they start getting in trouble . I can't blame them for doing it today though after the circumstances of this series.
  2. I agree with you. Baseball is mostly a game of individual performances. Chemistry is necessary at times between a pitcher and catcher, and fielders should know what their responsibilities are as well as the guys around them, but I don't know how much either of those has to do with leadership. It's not like youngster Santana is going to come up to bat and try harder to hit a HR because of a passionate speech Thames gave him. Leadership in baseball is necessary to the extent that if Villar gets thrown out trying to steal 3rd with 2 outs twice in a week, someone needs to tell him to cut it out, probably the manager. But that's about it.
  3. Again, no one was saying (I don't believe) that he shouldn't be our closer. He just needs to get the last three outs of the game at a higher rate. That is all. I mean it is his job. Hey I might be the one to say it. Look at the way the Indians are using Andrew Miller this year and how valuable he's been in that role despite having NO saves. Miller comes in in crucial situations to save the game with runners on before things get out of hand. It's been a real benefit for Cleveland and it's worked. There's no reason Corey couldn't have great success in that role too when he strikes out basically 2 batters per inning. Maybe that should be his role here with Barnes being the guy to get the last 3 outs. I don't know.
  4. Garza doesn't strike me as a leader at all. I've never seen any leadership qualities about him beyond being a veteran. In fact it seems like the opposite to me. Leaders don't refuse to go to the pen and go home after being demoted. Braun I guess may be a little more of a leader by default but a rather quiet one who probably doesn't have the respect of all his teammates even if they won't say it out loud. Thames is not talked about much? Ha, I don't know about that, the man still has an OPS of over 1.000 and is probably our MVP. I agree he's probably going to end up as a team leader type if he's not yet. I think Aguilar seems well liked but I'm not sure there's really a leader there.
  5. 3 blown saves or not, Corey Knebel is still way better than anyone else in our pen and has elite closer stuff.
  6. There are no ties and there is no rule about a tie goes to the runner. If he was called safe on the field, chances are that call would've stood too. Yep. Didn't see it but 'tie goes to the runner' is a myth. Actually I believe by the letter of the law a theoretical 'tie' would go to the fielder as I think the rule says the runner needs to beat the ball. I'll have to look that up...
  7. I mean yah age is important. You are going to tell me you are confident Guerra keeps this up from 32-37 or whatever? Heck no. Taillon on the other hand is a pretty safe bet to not decline in the next 5 years. If anything I would expect improvement. Gilbert Lara is hitting .150 with an OPS of .421. It has been years and the guy still doesn't know how to play baseball. Blankenhorn on the other hand is hitting .230 with an OPS of .700. You can't possibly think those players have similar value. Blankenhorn is a true lottery ticket. Lara is a warm body who's most valuable attribute is the fact we wasted $3mil on him and we haven't dumped him yet. Regarding the pitchers I have seen both as #3 types with the potential to be more. Not Kershaws, but #2 types. Once again would I do that deal? No. I agree with most of what you said but I think you're being a little too hard on Lara, and I myself am no fan of Lara. It's hard to know what to ever expect from a teenager and it's hard to say that a 19 year old kid is just never going to know how to play baseball. Has he been horrible, yes. Is he ready for the level he's been playing at, no. But he would not be the first prospect with physical tools to look like he had no clue as a teenager in the lower levels and then just have things suddenly start clicking for him. One of those is a top 100 prospect in our own system, Isan Diaz. What are the odds Lara ever becomes a productive MLB player, not good at all. But that's why they call 'em lottery tickets.
  8. https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/andrew-miller-doesnt-have-any-saves-and-hes-the-best-reliever-in-baseball/amp/ Good argument for non-conventional bullpen roles. Maybe we're looking at this wrong and need to do a better job putting our guys in a position where they can be successful.
  9. Is Braun headed to Miami in this deal? If not, I really don't see the point.
  10. The Peralta for Dyson proposal mentioned here and in another thread both makes sense to me. Both underachieving guys that could use a change of scenery. Peralta wouldn't be my first choice to give up but I'd probably do it.
  11. Blankenhorn and Lara are worth pretty much the same at this point. Both low percentage lottery tickets with little odds of eventually paying off.
  12. Well Thornburg hasn't pitched a game for the Red Sox and Jeffress has been horrible this year. Smith had TJ and is out for the year. While we can't assume all these circumstances would be the same we can't assume they'd all be different either. People complain about the pen and the plan for the pen this year, but I think most of us agree on 2 things: 1) We would rather have Shaw + the prospects we got for Jeffress, Thornburg and Smith than have those 3 back now, and 2) This was always intended to be more of an evaluation season rather than one of expected contention. So with that said, I don't understand how anyone can complain about the bullpen prep heading into the season. We gave Barnes a shot despite a rough spring, that was the right call. We signed Feliz, who was a worthy flyer, and it hasn't worked out. What moves would you have expected of Stearns this off-season in a pricey bullpen market? My vote was Greg Holland, who would look good right now, but with a possible 16M player option next year, no way would I have wanted them to do that. Drake's peripherals made him a worthy flyer, and while I wasn't crazy about Hughes, I understand the desire for a GB sprcialist. So I just ask, what should Stearns have done differently to assemble this pen specifically that he didn't do? Spending $15-$20M a year on a top end closer wasn't a good option, I think we can all agree on that.
  13. Absolutely, Aguilar's mistake may have cost us the game. All he had to do was step on 1st and there's 2 outs now, and the tying run isn't coming to the plate. The situation changes entirely. Had it been bases loaded in a late tie game with 1 out, then I get trying to turn it. I understand it's a spur of the moment decision but this is the price you pay for not thinking ahead and knowing the situation. That doesn't take Torres off the hook, either. He still had an out and a 3 run lead with plenty of chances left to work out of it. Both players played a pivotal role in costing us this game.
  14. Think I need to take a break from this team tomorrow and regain some perspective. This is supposed to be fun. When it's becoming more stressful than fun it's probably time to step away and take a day off from them.
  15. I mean do we really have big 9th inning come from behind rallies no matter who the opposing closer is? Today doesn't really have anything to do with Knebel because he wasn't available . It shouldn't take an elite closer to hold a 3 run lead. If Torres can't do the job, he doesn't belong here. They could DFA all of Torres, Drake, Feliz and Hughes tomorrow and I wouldn't bat an eye.
  16. Sure miss the old vent thread on nights like this.
  17. Brewer fans, June 2nd: 'Man, I can't imagine a worse loss than this.' Carlos Torres, June 3rd: 'Hold my beer...'
  18. If our 'Real closer' was actually available today, we win. If our setup man is available, we probably win. No, past the first 2, it's a wasteland.
  19. I want to say words I'm not allowed to say on this board. So I'll just say this. Let's be honest. First place or not, this team is not a contender whatsoever. Self-reflection, we are a 1st place team only in the technical sense because the rest of the division is off to a very poor start, and we ain't finishing here.
  20. Good work making up for your stupid move in the top half of the inning, Aguilar.
  21. So yeah, maybe we can stop getting on Knebel for not being able to hold a 1 run lead. If he's in today, we don't even need to watch the 9th, it's over.
  22. Game turned the minute Aguilar inexplicably doesn't step on 1st and get a sure out. That said, you are a garbage can in human form, Torres
  23. Hahahaha, unreal. Just unreal. 90 right down the middle. Get bent Torres.
