  1. This. People never seem to get this. Boggles my mind. Sanatana will get plenty of PT. He's not going anywhere. What in the world are other teams going to learn about Nieuwenhuis with another 20 ABs that they don't already know? It's not like whether he goes 7 for his next 20 or 3 for his next 20 is going to affect his value whatsoever. He is who he is and everyone knows it. I'd give him a better chance of getting hurt with regular playing time than doing anything that is going to significantly increase his value. Also, I would assume by August 23rd that Nieuwenhuis has either cleared waivers or been claimed. I don't see any reason they would have waited til the last week, so I don't see him going anywhere, though I'd like to be wrong.
  2. Look, I understand Counsell is competitive and wants to win now, but this thing for Nieuwenhuis is ridiculous. Santana was a top 100 prospect last year, we gave up a great player to get him, and he's finally healthy again. We've got just over a month left this season to evaluate him and see how he fits into our future outfield plans. This is a year for EVALUATION. Not a year to do everything possible to scrape out an extra win on our record. Santana needs to play. For crying out loud, we traded a decent player in the offseason in part to accommodate him.
  3. I have a hard time pegging Thornburg's arbitration value next season. 3, 4 million?
  4. He's definitely pressing. Trying way too hard right now.
  5. I agree with all of this except Brinson not being worth a big return. He's arguably a top 25 prospect in all of baseball and was the centerpiece of a deal for both Lucroy and Jeffress. If they even considered dealing him I'm sure the return would have to be substantial. At this point anyway.
  6. This could probably go either in the Trade or Minors discussion, but what are people's thoughts on exploring trades for the seemingly crowded outfield that we have in our farm? By my estimates, we have at least 6 outfielders that could be viewed as legitimate outfielders of the future, plus one current very high level player in Braun, so you've got Braun, Broxton, Santana, Ray, Phillips, Brinson, and Clark. If you really want to stretch, you could even add Harrison and Coulter to this list to make 9. Now often these 'problems' solve themselves, and a guy or two on this list are bound to not pan out, but while there's still quite a bit of value in this group, should we be looking at moving some of them now in prospect for prospect trades, or for young MLB players like Villar? Braun is a very obvious trade candidate, but the age, injuries, PED history, contract, and no-trade clause all present obstacles. The thing is, in spite of all those things, he's still a really good player, and we're not just going to give him away. So what about the value of some of the current outfield prospects? One included in a package for a high level pitching prospect might be one path in the much needed quest to rebuild our pitching staff.
  7. Based on his service time this year, how much control over Broxton are we looking at? Through 2021, or 2022? Is 2019 looking like pre-arby, or Super 2?
  8. I actually see a lot of Rickie Weeks in Broxton. Low average, high OBP, respectable power, lots of walks, tons of strikeouts. Rickie tends to elicit a wide range of reactions from Brewer fans when reflecting on his career, but at his best, he was a really good player. It would not at all be disappointing if Broxton peaked there.
  9. I know you are a Garza apologist, but even to try to argue that a guy who should have given up 3 runs while committing an error, giving up 'only' two hard hit hits in just 3 2/3rds , didn't deserve to lose the game, is on a whole different level. This also ignores the fact that Marinez stranded 2 inherited runners from Garza, so Garza actually could have easily given up 7 or even 8 runs. Yes, if we have absolutely zero expectations of Garza compared to any replacement level call-up, he did fine.
  10. Well, you can have both. Just because we don't NEED salary relief in a Braun trade doesn't mean you don't take it if you can get it. Nothing wrong with a deal which gets you a guy like Urias AND salary relief, although I probably wouldn't be willing to send Ray or Brinson. But I do think we need to remain open to all options. That includes trading prospects when the opportunity is right, like we did for Villar.
  11. While I'm not sure how Fangraphs comes to their conclusions, I'm always curious as to what they peg our players' values at to get an idea of who is a tremendous value, and who is dead weight. Obviously you can't take these literally, they're still fun to look at. For this I just used the guys on our current 25 man roster even though there are others that have figured into the equation (obviously Lucroy's value tremendously exceeds his salary ). Only exception I made was Junior Guerra, not wanting to exclude his large value for a small precautionary hiatus, and therefore I excluded Suter. Guerra - $18.1M Davies - $16.7M Nelson - $5.8M Anderson - $2.2M Peralta - $1.1M Garza - $4.7M Thornburg - $11.1M Knebel - $2.5M Torres - $3.2M Boyer - $2.7M Marinez - $1.1M Cravy - $200K Scahill - $500K Villar - $17.4M Arcia - ($3.3M) (negative ) Broxton - $7.3M Carter - $7.2M Braun - $24.4M Gennett - $2.1M Perez -$10.1M Nieuwenhuis - $6.3M Pina - $2.5M Maldonado - $2.1M Elmore - ($3.4M) Santana - ($2M) Side note, Elmore has been worth negative every year in the bigs in his career to the tune of $18.1M negative total. How he has managed to scratch out a big league career for so long is nothing short of a remarkable accomplishment.
  12. I'm trying to remain grounded on Broxton, but it's hard not to be excited. If his ceiling is Carlos Gomez, that would be amazing. Even if it's 'just' Lorenzo Cain, that would be great.
  13. If he had done enough he would be gone. Nobody is claiming him and the Brewers would surely dump him for next to nothing. Mostly agreed. He has an ERA near 5, he had a 5.63 ERA last year, and he's been hurt. Oh, and he's expensive. There are more attractive options for contenders. Not saying he's untradeable, but any conversation about trading him is going to involve the words, 'This is how much cash you'll have to send us,' and 'This is the filler non-prospect journeyman minor leaguer that we'll send you.'
  14. Yeah occasionally, names will leak, mlbtraderumors.com is usually on top of it. I think when we had Lohse it was leaked that he had cleared. But yeah, like Casey said I'm sure Garza has cleared. I'm sure we put most our guys on waivers, but it's possible we are waiting til the end of the month for guys that we want to try to at least get a contender to claim, like Torres. I'm a little surprised we haven't heard anything on Nieuwenhuis, who could have value to a contender and is dirt cheap, but we have little use for him. Still some time left though. It would be kind of fun if the complete list of waiver placements, claims, and pullbacks were publicly available, but I'm sure there's good reasons that it isn't.
  15. Why? I'm not trying to be snide, I'm honestly wondering what you mean. There are worse starting options out there, though I think if Gomez is to recover his value it has to be as a centerfielder. But for now I'm just happy for him that he has an every day job. If he rebounds, maybe he can find a market for him as a CFer yet in the offseason.
  16. I'm sure this is an oversimplification on my part and probably betrays a lack of understanding, but it seems logical to me that if we have the best farm system in baseball (or at least, a top 5), we would have better minor league teams. Why is that not the case?
  17. He doesn't play GG defense anymore. Outside of two years his offense has been average at best. He doesn't have a .350 OBP or hit 15 HRs by the deadline either. It was a wish list.
  18. This is already the 4th season that the Astros have been in the AL??? The older I get, time seems to go exponentially faster.
  19. Just curious how a guy in this situation is 'close' to being signed. The Astros are on the hook for all but the prorated minimum. What is there to negotiate, unless they are looking for a commitment beyond this year?
  20. Sign him cheap, let's see gold glove defense, a .350 OBP, and 15 HRs/25 steals at the deadline ....then trade him back to the Astros for a couple top 50s.
  21. I agree with most of what you are saying, but I can't help but wonder how aggressively they plan to shop Braun in the offseason. He's had a huge year, and if they can find a buyer at the winter meetings, that could make a buy low reclamation project like Gomez a little more attractive -- with the understanding that the full intent is just to flip him again if he plays well, and let him walk after 2017 if he doesn't.
  22. I rarely ever offer any 'woe is me' sympathies to guys who have made millions, but if Gomez had hit free agency after '13 or '14, he would have been in line for a $100-$150M contract, easily. The decision to sign away free agency years early is probably going to end up costing him 9 figures. I hope he has no regrets, but really, who wouldn't. On the flip side, if he managed his money wisely, he still made enough to comfortably live off for his entire life. He seems like a very likeable guy and no matter where he ends up I hope he can turn things around again. I won't count him out. Plenty of guys have had a resurgence after looking like they're done.
