  1. You don't like the Gomez and Fielder comparables? Ok, how about David Wright? Josh Hamilton? Adam Dunn? There is absolutely no way you can predict with certainty that a great player with an injury and PED checkered past won't hit a wall in his mid 30s and decline significantly and suddenly. Not even if you type it in all caps.
  2. Broxton back on the pine for the 2nd straight night, Santana also out. We are not contenders, Craig. Stop the madness and let the kids play. We're down to a month left, rosters are about to expand, and thanks to your OF management, we have zero idea of what we have in Santana yet, and we still really don't know what we have in Broxton yet. Broxton was bound to hit a slump at some point, and a night off to regroup is understandable, but another is a benching. This is getting beyond a point of frustration.
  3. His salary goes down to $19 million in 2019 and $17 million in 2020. Yes there's a $4 million buyout for 2021 too but he might still be productive enough that another year at $15 million would be reasonable. Brewers paid what But he'll be 35 in 2019 and 36 in 2020. It's not like he'll be 42. Brewers paid Aramis Ramirez $30 million over 2 years at age 36-37, less what they saved for two months. I don't necessarily disagree with any of this, but none of it changes the 50% luxury tax problem for some teams. Even a $17M contract with a 50% luxury tax costs $25.5M. I also don't see what difference it makes that he'll be 36 vs. 42 at the end of this. There's still a chance he could be really productive, or he could be bad enough to not justify anything more than a minor league contract. Some guys can remain productive well into their 30s, others hit a wall in their early 30s and never recover. Look at Prince Fielder. 32 and he's done. I know he's hurt, but he wasn't a shadow of his former self before the injury. Look at Carlos Gomez. I'm not saying Braun will definitely hit a wall before 2020, but I don't blame other teams for considering the possibility. Father Time does not catch up to everyone at the same rate.
  4. Players of Braun's caliber don't (generally) go unclaimed just because teams realize we'd pull him back, so I really don't think that's it. If they wanted him at that price, they'd still put in a claim which would give them exclusive negotiating rights for him. Whether or not they think we'd pull him back, a claim still allows that team the right to negotiate with us for Braun. I don't think the issue is the average yearly price of Braun's contract, it's the length. If Braun was just under contract through next year at 20M, or even just 2018, it probably wouldn't be a big issue. Through 2020 is a long commitment. Just because Braun's contract is a bargain now doesn't mean it'll be a bargain in 2 years. It might be, but that's a risk. It didn't look like a bargain to most a year ago. Also, the big spenders also have to contend with the luxury tax, as someone pointed out. Any contract the Dodgers take on will cost the Dodgers an extra 50%. So that 20M next year for Braun at full price will cost the Dodgers 30M, at which point it doesn't look like such a bargain anymore. So while that doesn't mean the Dodgers aren't interested in Braun, it's a plenty good enough reason for them not to claim him on waivers and risk 30M a year for a 32 year old. They'll no doubt be looking for some sort of salary relief in a deal (or return a big contract to us), which actually works out fine for us because it seems we are willing to offer some sort of salary relief in a trade for Braun to maximize the return.
  5. I'd want more for Braun, but I'd be happy to take Puig, even though I know many feel differently. If he can't get his head on straight, you can always move on. Maturity can develop. But talent, either someone has it or they don't. Puig does.
  6. I used to be a big advocate for replay but MLB has botched it so bad. At times you'll see them a stare at an insignificant play in the 5th inning for 4 minutes and still get it wrong. On this one with our game on the line they take a quick glance and just stick with it. It's impossible to ever predict what they're going to do.
  7. Wily is probably a non-tender candidate, so I don't think his service time is much of an issue. As far as I can tell he's still arbitration eligible in 2017 and 2018 and scheduled for free agency in 2019.
  8. It's true that Villar's defense hasnt been good this year, but in the past he's been just a bit below average. He's never going to be a great fielding infielder, but he can be passable enough where a lot of teams could find a place for him somewhere as a starter. You don't banish a 25 year old rising player to DH unless they're a catastrophically bad fielder, and he's not at that level. Braun was that bad, at 3rd. Villar is not worse than Braun was at 3rd. Villar isn't even in the same universe as Braun was at 3rd. Braun is about as bad of an outfielder as Villar is an infielder, and he's been sticking there just fine.
  9. Shows how much I know. Just got an alert that he gave up a grand slam and figured they were earned. Paying more attention to the Packers. Still, he's not doing enough to be of any interest to anyone.
  10. I certainly send him my best wishes. We all make mistakes and most of us have probably made mistakes that could have ended up much worse, myself included. So I'm no one to point the finger. Not condoning it, but not claiming to be blameless myself either. Just hope he can get right with whatever he's got going on and keep his career (and more importantly, his life) on track.
  11. When you have your best stuff of the year and still end up with 5 runs earned in 5 1/3rd, you know you're done.
  12. To Give Away To A Good Home: Matt Garza and Kirk Niewenhuis. Must take together.
  13. The Pirates can stop whining any time. Every one of those calls was right.
  14. I can't explain Counsell's intentional walk decisions. They seem incredibly arbitrary and gut-driven. Back in June in a tight game in LA he intentionally walked 2 to load the bases to bring up Turner, who was the only one that had killed us all day. Other times he'll avoid the intentional walk, like last night. McCutchen has been hitting over .300 in June and was 2 for 4 before his last plate appearance last night. It's not like he's been scuffling.
  15. Broxton has a ridiculous success rate. If he get 600 PAs next year, he'll steal 60 easily.
  16. To be honest, I'm surprised someone hasn't nabbed him. Plenty of contenders have worse on their roster. I agree with you here. He's versatile, has some pop, and can play passable defense. He's not going to be a significant scale tipper for anyone, but he'd be a pretty good 4th OFer for a contender. It's possible he was claimed by a team without a use for him to block a contender.
  17. Trade him! I know you probably couldn't wait to get on to post that, but the bench Niewenhuis crowd has never called for it based on his 2016 productivity. His OPS and defense are respectable for a centerfielder. The reasons havenothing to do with current production.
  18. Can we get something going already? Chad Kuhl is not a future MLB ace, but we're making him look like one.
  19. Good question, but I would say, much later. He's drawn plenty of walks in his minors career so I'd chalk the fact that he's not up to nothing more than a small sample , though you'd figure it would have happened by now after 50 some ABs.
  20. Brinson continue to rake for the Sky Sox. It's Colorado Springs, of course, but still. ..time to get excited about him.
  21. ...can hit a grand slam with no one on base.
  22. Says bickering on here is bad. Continues to bicker. A 14 day stretch being as arbitrary as that is, I'd be willing to bet Counsell doesn't care about anyone's opinions on his lineups. We were all aware of the splits before tonight. No one formed their opinion of the OF playing time unaware that Kirks are heavily home-favored this year. And no one who favors less for Kirk bases it whatsoever on winning the most possible games this year.
