  1. Remember when some wanted to give Segura 60M after a few months last year?
  2. Rock is pushing the limits of PC about as far as he can when it comes to Andy Fletcher.
  3. I've heard of Andy Fletcher's name like twice and he's already in CB Buckner/Angel Hernandez territory as far as I'm concerned.
  4. Man, going through the 1st basemen in the league, there's just not going to be much available or worth trading for. If you whittle it down to likely sellers, you've got maybe D'Backs, Cubs, Padres, Rockies, Mets, Phillies, Astros, and Rays. The Cubs aren't going to trade Rizzo to us and the D'Backs aren't going to trade Goldschmidt, so that's out. Medica and Loney aren't noticeable upgrades from what we have. The Mets aren't trading Duda after trading Davis. Howard is expensive, aging, and not nearly as productive anymore. Houston has no trade pieces at 1st. That leaves Morneau as probably the best option, but I'm skeptical of Colorado bats.
  5. You were and you are. Please stop. Anyone but the Cubs could still win this division. A 4.5 game lead is nothing. 7 game leads have been blown with less than 3 weeks left. If you were to tell me today that we do not go on to win the division but do end up winning a wild card, I would be satisfied.
  6. I don't recall, did we make any deadline moves in 2011? Hairston?
  7. Or he is hurt and is still the Brewers best option. If this is the case he deserves credit for playing through his injury if the team asked him to. Alot of guys wouldn't do this. I'm sure they'd probably like to give him a little more time off right now, but we're just lacking options in the OF. Herrera isn't a guy you want starting a couple times a week. Might be a good idea to see what's out there for a 4th OF'er at the trade deadline.
  8. I know the comments about being concerned about Braun draw ire with some, but to me it's real. I don't know if it's the thumb, if it's a lack of PED's, or maybe, hopefully, just a slump, but he's not the same player right now. We pay Braun to be and count on Braun to be an MVP candidate player. Not to hit 25 HR's and be a decent corner outfielder.
  9. Actually, they can't, because neither one is matching that .740 OPS for the season over the bad stretch that you picked out for Dunn. Every player goes through bad stretches so when you cherry pick time frames, it's pretty easy to make a player look good/bad. He'll probably get hot again and wind up close to his career OPS. We can probably get by with Reynolds and Overbay for the season but I don't know why anyone needs to downplay Dunn so much. Is he worth $15M this season, no. Is he still a good player that can reach base well and hit for power, yes.
  10. Yeah, I hate the smallball tactics sometimes, but even that it seems like he is getting more reasonable and less predictable with. (I vaguely recall an AB the other day with Peralta when I thought for sure he would have him sac bunt and he decided to let him swing away). As long as he doesn't pull a Kotsay in CF type move in the NLCS again, I would say he's grown a lot.
  11. How does poking fun at the amount and joking around about holding out for $2-$3.50 indicate a lack of reading the article?
  12. I'd also agree that saying Scooter is really the only thing we can give him credit for is really underselling some of the bullpen moves. I've been critical of Melvin in the past, but he's turned a team that wasn't very good last year into an NL best 17 over .500 near the end of June. He did it with a pretty lackluster farm system using mostly only very subtle roster moves (trade Aoki for Smith, sign Duke, sign K-Rod, sign Reynolds). It's hard not to be impressed with that. Locking up top players at their respective positions (Lucroy, Gomez) to reasonable team-friendly deals has been huge.
  13. Forgive me, but I don't see how Adam Dunn is any better than Mark Reynolds. The name Adam Dunn is alot of the reason people keep talking about him, not his talent. He hasn't been worth anything for years...just a strikeout machine that crushes a meatball once in awhile. Give or take a few digits each season, Dunn and Reynolds slash's are nearly identical...except Reynolds is making millions less. Yes, he is a bit better than Overbay, but do we need to take that salary on for a guy that is providing the same WAR ? I think we should have signed Justin Morneau is what we should have done (even before seeing what he's doing this season). Maybe if the Rockies continue to cliffdive they will unload him or Cuddy later in the season. Cuddy could probably be had for very little right now since hes on the 60 day DL and will not help save their season. He'd be good 1B and OF depth and his contract expires after the season. Adam Dunn is better than Mark Reynolds because he is much better at getting on base. Other than that, yes they are very similar in the HR's and strikeouts. Saying Dunn is a strikeout machine that just crushes a meatball once in awhile is a little unfair. Other than his aberration season of 2011, he's a perennial threat every year to hit 40 HR's and get on base at a .350 clip. He has a .379 OBP and .873 OPS against RHP this year. That's pretty good. Trouble is that Reynolds really isn't much of a platoon guy. His career splits vs. RHP and LHP aren't dramatic at all.
  14. If we put the Dunn convo to bed we might as well put any potential 1B to bed and accept the fact that we are just going to be stuck with a Reynolds/Overbay platoon for the entire season, unless Morris heats up significantly. His .734 OPS in the PCL this year is pretty underwhelming.
  15. To me, Dunn over Overbay isn't a marginal upgrade. Its not my plan A but there's not a ton out there. Morales and Ike are gone/traded.
  16. Adam Dunn? Wonder if the White Sox would just be willing to dump salary if they fall out of contention in the next few weeks and trade him for next to nothing if we take on his remaining salary this year.
  17. Well, even .820 is a great OPS for a SS. But the extreme split is why I'm skeptical of a guy like Morneau being our solution at 1st.
  18. Kintzler is sort of like the new version of Kameron Loe. Deceivingly decent stats, but fails the eye test every time.
  19. Anybody remember this game? http://scores.espn.go.com/mlb/recap?gameId=240428108
  20. I don't think Brantley was the type of prspect that would have kept us from offering an extension to go-go. Brantley had an awfully nice 2012, and we re-signed Gomez after 2012. Course we don't know if he would have had enough playing time to do so here or how that was going to be split. Prior to 2012 Gomez was still largely considered a bust, so it's entirely possible that we wouldn't have stuck with him in the starting lineup much or at least split it pretty evenly among them. I think trading Cain had the same effect in reverse, because we were pretty high on Cain. All just speculation, of course -- I'm just not sure how much faith we still had in Gomez going into 2012 or if he was just our best option.
  21. Brantley or Green were the only two that Melvin confirmed because they were the "finalists" that Cleveland had it narrowed down to, but it's long been speculated that Lorenzo Cain and Lucroy were also on the list. It would be odd if there were only 2 names on the list. We would have chosen the name instead of Cleveland had we not made the list that year.
  22. One thing to consider -- would we have extended Gomez before his contract expired if Brantley had still been in our system at the time? I'm not sure we would have.
