  1. I agree with the general thoughts on Melvin and have said the same. His offseasons are very predictible. Attempt to patch holes from the precious year via FA or trade and move on. I don't feel like there has been a 3 to 5 year plan in a long time. Just a constant series' of 1 year plans. It feels like he's thinking reactively about 90% of the time and pro-actively about 10% of the time.
  2. And to Roenicke's credit, I think there are some ways in which he IS a modern, forward thinker who isn't stuck in old trends (defensive shifts, use of backup catcher) but too many where he's not a modern thinker and is stuck in old trends (small ball, lineup construction, bullpen roles).
  3. MA is somewhat of an emotional guy, and I'm not sure how much goodwill can be bought with him. If he made an emotional decision to can a guy in September in the midst of a playoff race, I'm not sure how much patience he's going to have with one that drastically underperforms his expectations. If RR goes, I think Melvin goes down with him this time as well. Not necessarily because he deserves it, but because like people have mentioned, at some point you have to alter the organizational approach entirely. Although Macha and Roenicke couldn't be much more different, so I wouldn't necessarily say that we can assume there is a certain "brand" of individual that Melvin would go after. I would like our next coach to be a younger more modern thinker who tries his best to understand the current game of baseball and isn't stuck in trends from the 70's and 80's.
  4. I completely agree. My response to Mark saying "we're better than this" would be "with all due respect, we really aren't" 5 of 8 of our regulars are well over .300, and the bullpen is much better than last year. Poor fundamentals and many outs on the bases are costing us. I'm not saying they should be the favorites in the NL, but they should definitely be better than this.
  5. I don't care for Lucroy much as a defensive catcher, to be honest. It doesn't seem like he calls a great game, and there have now been multiple pitchers that for whatever reason, he cannot get on the same page with. I've never seen that with any other catcher.
  6. Judging from Mark A's demeanor today, I'm not sure how solid Roenicke's job security really is. It's clear he's frustrated, and I think his expectations for this roster are much higher than they are delivering. If he fired his manager during a September playoff run after a bad stretch, what makes Roenicke safe? Only difference is that I think if a change is made this time, Melvin goes down with him.
  7. Well for some perspective, if Braun had never signed an extension with us, he would just be entering free agency next year. He would probably command something at least in the vicinity of $25M per year in free agency over that time. As it is he will make $113M over 7 years with us, or just over $16M a year.
  8. Not at all now and not at all in the future. Braun's contract is a relative bargain. He could be traded for a huge return tomorrow if we really needed to get rid of it.
  9. I can't help but wonder if this would be a game if we had 1st and 2nd with nobody out in the 2nd like we should have. Thanks to our over-aggressive philosophies, we'll never know.
  10. Kranitz doesn't have a clue as pitching coach. That's simply my opinion, as the job performance of a pitching coach is difficult for an outsider to evaluate.
  11. Just because Rock had a conniption fit about it doesn't make that check swing call as bad as he would have you believe. It was borderline, but it wasn't a blatantly obvious blown call. Trust me, I'll gladly blame the umpiring crew when necessary. We are such a fundamentally stupid team. I've had it with these outs on the bases.
  12. No, what's stupid is trying to justify 7 hits and 2 walks in 1 and 2/3rds and to continue to make excuses for a guy with a 6.62 ERA game after game. Electric stuff doesn't mean squat if you can't throw strikes with the bases loaded. Manny Parra had electric stuff too.
  13. The problem is there are no other guys. Thornburg is getting shelled in AAA. There's no one else in Nashville worth a lick besides Hellweg. You can probably go ahead and try Hellweg, but don't expect much. May as well try Jimmy Nelson if you want to look at Huntsville, but he's not on the 40.
  14. As much as I was looking forward to watching Peralta pitch this year is how much I hate watching him pitch now. To me he just serves as a reminder of how pathetic we are at developing starting pitching while our rivals crank out aces.
  15. It's hard for me to get excited about a rotation that features Estrada, Peralta, and Burgos/Fiers. The inability to develop starting pitching is going to be the death of this team this year and over the next several. They were able to keep it going at the top in the past in the late years of Sheets by acquiring guys like CC Sabathia, and then Greinke and Marcum. Now that the ship has sailed on all that, they have no choice but to throw every bit of the pitching they have in the minors at the wall and hope something sticks. So far, nothing has.
  16. There are many stats for situational hitting, but in general we do seem to be pretty close to league average in all of them. Which leads me to believe that there is a lot more to our mysterious inability to score runs despite stats that scream top offense, and much of that is due to RR's baserunning philosophies.
  17. In fairness, the Astros have a payroll less than some players. They should be bad. We should not be.
  18. I'm just going to say it. Ron Roenicke is a horrible, horrible manager. He has no clue. 5 guys hitting well over .300 and we continue to give outs away on the bases every day with his foolish baserunning philosophies. 2011 is going to put us in a hole. We will not win under this manager again, but the fact that he was given 2 aces in 2011 and won the division with it has bought him a ton of job security. It's unfortunate.
  19. Thanks a lot Braun. Swung at Ball 4 which would have made it 4-3 with the bases still loaded and 1 out and he ends the inning on.the next pitch with a double play.
  20. Weeks is done. You can honestly stick a fork in his career. He is through.
  21. Second time today that Gomez has been up in that situation and struck out.
