  1. Marcum won't be back on a 1 year/$8M offer. Either you offer him the 1 year/$13M qualifying offer or he hits free agency. His injury will probably prevent him from getting as big of a deal as he had hoped, but he'll do better in dollars and years than 1/$8.
  2. I thought that new deal was regional and specific to the Brewers, not having anything to do with any other team.
  3. There was some savings that the Greinke trade should bring from the original payroll, probably $4-$5M or so. I don't agree that the Brewers are still small market, though. You won't be seeing a $120 payroll, true, but this years payroll was still top 10 in MLB, and I'm pretty sure they are still up there for attendance. That's not small market to me, unless you're solely referring to location relative to other "large" markets.
  4. Well, that's a wrap. I wonder what it's like to take a 3 run lead into the 9th and have it be a relatively uneventful inning.
  5. For as much as everyone has hated Weeks this year, he's actually back around a .700 OPS. He's had an off-year, but he isn't one of the main culprits for this disaster of a season.
  6. The good news is, the Cardinals stranded runners at 2nd and 3rd with nobody out. The bad news is, it isn't going to make an ounce of difference.
  7. At this point, it doesn't matter what reliever we put into the game, I expect at least 1 run to be scored every inning.
  8. This year, probably not. What's the point? We're just going through the motions at this point, trying to make it through 162 and get to next year. In a contending year...well, still probably not. He'd just be another flavor of suck to add to our current flavors of suck, but at least our current ones offer some degree of defensive skills.
  9. This homeplate umpire is making a pretty strong case for letting Questec call balls and strikes. He's giving a generous 3-4 inches off the outside corner all night.
  10. It's actually embarrassing how much better seemingly every team has for a bullpen than us.
  11. Honestly, Roenicke should have managed back in 1912, not 2012. His style would have fit right in.
  12. Morgan is horrible. So is Roenicke with his chronic addiction to bunting.
  13. It wouldn't be the worst thing in the world if he got shelled the rest of the year and ended up having to settle for 5/$90 from us.
  14. You know what, even though they didn't overturn the call, I respect the homeplate umpire for 1) Asking for help on the call, and 2) Letting Roenicke have his say without barking in his face and giving him the quick hook. It's a little sad that you need to put an umpire up on a pedestal for these simple actions, but you don't see it much anymore.
  15. I have finally reached the point in this season where I feel no real emotional response to whether the Brewers win or lose.
  16. Agree completely, exactly the type of contract this team doesn't need right now. But you said the key word- assuming. Were there any reports that a team was willing to trade for him and pick up his entire salary? Agreed -- that's the kicker, we don't know that for sure, at least not that I've heard. Salary relief is great, but if they're going to ask for $12M to cover the rest of his contract and toss us a low level prospect, forget about it.
  17. I'm a little disappointed in Jed Bradley. A 5-9 record with a 5.23 ERA in High A is not what we're hoping for at this point. That being said, I'm only judging him by stat lines, is there anything anyone has seen from him this year that they can bring up about him that paints a little more optimistic picture?
  18. Come to think of it, that's an interesting idea. Would that be a sustainable GM strategy? (Sign FA's to backloaded deals with the intent on trading to only take the hit of the better frontloaded part of the deal.) Example, sign Marcum to a 4 year, $44 deal, but have the first year be at $7M and the second year at $9M and if possible, trade him then and thus get him for a 2 year, $16M dollar deal while the team you deal to gets the 2 year, $28M dollar deal. If you did it correctly, you could get guys like Ramirez on the cheap for short-term commitments. Of course, chances are that some of these FA's aren't going to work out and won't be tradeable, at least not without eating a lot of salary, so you'll be stuck with a lot of bloated contracts at the end of deals.
  19. I'm a little disappointed that we didn't approach Ramirez given the current state of the team. Assuming that we could have gotten someone to take on his entire salary, to me it comes down to simple logic. Since Ramirez' contract was backloaded, he earned only $6M this year and has effectively a 2 year, $30 dollar deal left after the season. Would you pay that for Ramirez right now if he was a free agent? Probably not. So, why would you agree to pay that if given an out when he's already on the team?
  20. Is anyone else really glad that we aren't the team saddled with paying Prince Fielder $24 million dollars a year for the next 9 years? He's going to be less of a viable starting first baseman as he gets older, and the power numbers are down this year at 17. We are getting that kind of power just fine out of Hart at a much lower post-arby price. He's putting up an .888 OPS currently, which is good, but not for that kind of price tag. If you look at his career numbers, Prince is a statistical oddity. He has alternated between an MVP type season followed by a still good but much more modest .875ish OPS type season, his entire career.
  21. There is no way that at least, to me, anyone can spin that Roenicke quote and make it anything other than exactly what it is. Roenicke's treatment of Gamel has been disgusting -- and I'm not talking about his playing time, but how he's been portrayed in the sports media by Roenicke. Last year, when people wanted to see more playing time for Green, Roenicke pointed out that some players do well in AAA but that it doesn't always "translate over". And he used Gamel's name to make his point. Now he says something like this. Does it honestly take a degree in public relations to figure out that saying these types of things about your young, cost-controlled players, who have yet to establish themselves enough at the MLB level to develop a great deal of confidence, is probably not a good thing?
  22. There's no hard set rule for setting an innings limit, but 30 innings increase from the previous year is generally a pretty good barometer. I wouldn't push Fiers past 160 this year, especially with him presumably being a big part of your future now. I would shut him down after rosters expand -- that would be about the time when I would expect him to hit 160. Then go ahead and let Peralta take over his spot for the rest of the season.
  23. Somebody please come in and tell me again about how great MLB umpires are in general.
  24. Roenicke on Gamel: "I don't know about him. We still like him but I don't think he's a guy you can say, 'Oh yeah, he can definitely do it.' " Way to inspire confidence in the young man, Skip.
