  1. Honestly, at this point, I would probably just throw Axford back into the closers role and roll with it the rest of the season, probably with Henderson as setup man. K-Rod has no value to us as this season is already lost and he won't be with us going forward. Take that combined with his current production and there is no real reason to have him pitching high-leverage innings. K-Rod could be DFA'ed tomorrow with no affect on the organization now or in the future. At this point, we're just playing out the fiddle. We have 6-7 weeks to figure out whether Axford is even a viable option for closer next year, so we may as well let him run with it and see if there is a late-season recovery.
  2. Yeah, it's hard to believe that this was a team that almost went to the World Series last year. They've fallen hard and fast, and I don't even think that the loss of Fielder was the main cause. It's just been a disastrous season.
  3. Boy, we suck. There's just really no better way to say it. We suck.
  4. And on that note, I certainly wouldn't advocate a fire-sale, and do think there are still plenty of pieces on this team that could be part of a contender. But I'm of the camp that believes that you listen to all offers at all times. If the Nationals call inquiring on Braun, you listen. They're going to have to blow you out of the water and offer a package like Strasburg, Zimmerman, and Harper, but you still listen.
  5. New low, even for Augie: Augie: "Betancourt made a great pitch there, on, on.......(silence).." Coshun: "Ryan Braun". Augie: "Yes. I forgot."
  6. Ah well. Just saved the bullpen the humiliation of blowing another one, I'm sure.
  7. Outside corner hasn't been a strike all night. Til now.
  8. It's certainly lucky then that there's about a hundred other options rather than signing Dempster and a couple of free agent relievers then isn't it? "Signing Dempster and a couple of free agent relievers" was an example scenario. You could sub that with "Signing Edwin Jackson and a couple of free agent relievers". Instead of being sarcastic, you could elaborate on your general plan to be contenders next year. I understand you want to give the young guys a shot and converting Hellweg and Pena to relievers when they are probably not even MLB ready next year. That's all fine and good, but that's not going to get the job done as far as turning the team into a contender in 2013. I'm also a little puzzled that you want to give the young pitchers a shot (which I agree with), but you also earlier suggested a "Greinke-like trade" this offseason if we are unable to land Greinke himself. There is no Greinke-like trade that doesn't involve parting with the best pitching pieces in our farm system.
  9. No, I don't think you're delusional at all, just think that it's going to take more than going out and signing someone like Ryan Dempster and a pair of relievers to make this team a contender again.
  10. Nephew. Pretty solid, too. Wonder if the Rockies would be interested in a swap.
  11. I don't know why I continue to watch this. It's not enjoyable. It's just a habit at this point, I guess.
  12. If Rick Kranitz is not fired after this year, he owes Mike Fiers a car.
  13. Now that Wolf's contract is expiring, I wonder who the veteran innings-eating starting pitcher that will be signed in the offseason for 3 years, $30M to take his place.
  14. It's fine to look at 2013 and think there's a shot, but what's the plan for making that happen? For position players, I don't think they need to do a thing. They will need to figure out where Gamel fits in, if he does, and whether Hart is a 1B or a RF, but that's about it. They have a good lineup, and everyone there is returning, or can be brought back. The rotation is loaded with question marks. It's quite possible that Gallardo will be the only starter that began this year in the rotation, that will be returning. Fiers will be there, but then what? Estrada is probably a good #5, but nothing more. Then there's Peralta, Thornburg, and Rogers, all of which have potential, but are not sure things to be viable starters next year. It's fine if they want to go with some combination of those guys, but don't expect it to be a good, or even average rotation. They probably need at least one starter in free agency, and it has to be a very good one, not an "innings eater". I don't even know where they will start with the bullpen. More or less, it will need to be completely rebuilt, and it won't be as simple as going out and signing the best FA relievers that we can find. They were not contenders this year with Greinke and Marcum in the rotation most of the year. It's not a foregone conclusion that they can't be contenders without them, but it's going to take a very good offseason and then a lot of things going right. They're not a very good team right now with the talent that they have, and there's not a ton of reinforcements on the way coming up from the minors.
  15. I can't believe that there isn't a team out there that doesn't want to take "Wolfie" off our hands for nothing.
  16. Of course you haven't seen anything from them. They're not killer power hitters, Green's old gotten a couple cups of coffee in the bigs (playing-time-wise), Schafer only got a small cup of coffee last September, and Gindl hasn't sniffed the bigs yet. And none of them are having the year this year in AAA like they did last year. But that doesn't mean it can't happen. TH mention when Green was sent down that the Brewers are still high on him (2x minor league POY with a nasty hammate injury separating the 2x), obviously Gamel has done nothing but hit well in the minors, and Schafer & Gindl have a lot going for them. Maybe none of them are future All-Stars. But Jeff Cirillo (to cite one example) was never an All-Star but he was a good hitter, a great fielder, and the type of guy who usually helped & never hurt the team . . . and I'd like to think Green and/or Gamel have at least Cirillo-type potential. Certainly Cirillo came up with far less fan recognition at the time than Green & Gamel have. Of course it can happen -- you never know. Maldonado was far and away a better player this year than I thought he was going to be at the big league level. I'm just saying that I think the most likely scenario right now is that Green/Schafer/Gindl probably project closer to bench players than average MLB starters.
  17. I agree, I think that's a bit of a stretch. The offense should be fine next year, but the concern for me is how they're going to sustain the offense when the young pitchers finally start to show up in the rotation. I'll give you Braun of course, and I'll even give you Weeks, Lucroy, and Segura. Beyond that, we have no viable long-term solutions at 1B, 3B, CF, or RF. Maybe Gomez still turns out to be the answer in CF, I could buy that, and maybe Gamel settles in at RF or 1B. But I haven't seen anything from Green, Gindl, or Schafer that makes me think that they're more than guys that will end up filling out an MLB bench for cheap.
  18. I think TLB pretty much summed up exactly what I feel the problems with the direction of this organization are. I just don't really see any long-term plan here, it's strictly year to year, trying to fix what went wrong the year before and plug a hole in the boat only for a bigger hole to show up on the other side. So from what I know of Melvin, the solution this offseason is going to be to go out and sign 3-4 relievers in free agency, and I just don't think that's the answer here.
  19. Don't we hear enough of Augie already without having to listen to him come to the booth for special visits?
  20. Weeks hasn't been the problem this year.
  21. He actually wasn't a much better manager last year either, just a much luckier one.
  22. I could understand going day to day on a guy like Braun that you wanted back in there as quickly as possible and it just happened to be something that lingered for 15 days, but good grief, its Manny freaking Parra. If its been a week and he's not showing signs of returning, just make a retroactive move and give someone from the minors a look, its not we couldn't afford to try another arm out in this pen. Poor roster management.
  23. If Roenicke was "playing the matchups" with Axford's 13.2 career innings against the Astros, there is no reason he shouldnt consider Henderson's sparkling 0.00 career ERA kn 0 innings of work against the Stros. Roenicke is clueless on how to use statistical analysis. We're talking about a guy who would start Kotsay based on a career 3 for 10 line against a pitcher. Part of the reason that Axford had good career numbers against the Astros, Ron, is due to the fact that up until this season, Axford did pretty well against almost every team.
