  1. The street car is $1.50, (I think) and you could get off at Carrollton and Oak, walk about two to three blocks North on Oak. I lived in New Orleans for a year a few years ago. Thanks for bringing back some good memories, Dogger (I lived in Hollygrove and often ventured off that way on Carrollton). I definitely second Frenchman Street. Awesome music, and still close to where you're staying while getting you away from the ridiculousness that is Bourbon Street. I didn't do a whole lot of eating out or exploring in the quarter, but if you're looking for decent seafood, I really enjoyed Deanie's. I don't remember the street it's on, but it'll be pretty close to where you're staying. Another option for live music is an outdoor place right on Bourbon Street. I'm going back for a week in March. Thanks for getting me pumped up to go back, guys!
  2. It's interesting that we're having this discussion in a thread about whether or not the Brewers should trade an all-star 11th round pick. I think everyone has decent points. I'm not convinced that what the Rays have done can be completely chalked up to superior scouting and front office staff. I think a lot of it has been good fortune with draft slot and good luck that their picks have turned out. Yes I wish the Brewers had that fortune, but I'm fairly content with the high level of talent we have found.
  3. I'm not 100% sure I'm understanding this right, so please help me out. But if September 1st comes around and the Brewers still have 12 pitchers on the 25 man, they're stuck with a 12 man playoff staff because DL guys can only replace position player for position player or pitcher for pitcher. Is this right, or am I missing something? If that is the case, I really hope that either Gamel is up for a pitcher or Gomez for one before Sep 1st. Then, Wilson can be left off the roster for Weeks.
  4. Jim Thome just got traded back to Cleveland. http://www.google.com/hos...fcad4107a96724060b15fcca
  5. Thanks, Nottso. That was a very entertaining read.
  6. 2013 Gold Cup is in the next 2 years. Other than that and qualifying, I'm not sure what else they would have.
  7. I don't know if this is the best spot for this, but why does Lopez start at 2b so often instead of JHJ? Is it because Roenicke had Lopez first and doesn't realize that Hairston is better (both offensively and defensively), or is there some other reason? This is another really frustrating thing about this season w/ Roenicke/Melvin. Just another case of having better players on the bench or in the minors instead of starting or in the majors, respectively.
  8. I'd say that the call could have gone either way (for red or yellow). I could see a red being given, but at the same time, 2 of the 4 d's (distance to goal, number of defenders) were kind of iffy. I wouldn't have been all that surprised if the 2nd defender would have caught the American had there been no foul. I don't think it really matters either way....playing with 10 probably wouldn't have made that much of a difference. And it was a friendly.
  9. I would like this move if he plays 2nd now and SS once Rickie comes back. I'm a fan of his OBP, and it looks like his defense is very good at 2nd, and though there's not enough data at short, he should be about average.
  10. http://www.nj.com/soccer-...smann_is_us_soccers.html There's a link.
  11. If Weeks's injury is serious and Taylor Green isn't called up, we can be fairly certain that he's on the K-Rod list. Either that or DM should be fired for lack of ability to evaluate talent at the big league and minor league levels. DM should maybe be fired anyway if Green is on the PTBNL list for the K-Rod trade.
  12. I thought removing Marcum was fine....he had given up 5 or 6 deep fly balls in the last 2 innings, including the Rowand HR. I wouldn't have called what Marcum was doing last night cruising. Now, as for Roenicke batting Kotsay 3rd, that is always inexcusable. I honestly think he's worse than Yost at tactical managing. At least Ned was willing to try some new things like batting the pitcher 8th.
  13. And to add to that, when the worst case scenario for making a move is being right where you started, there's absolutely no reason not to make the move. I think worst case scenario, Green hits as poorly as McGehee for the rest of the season, but plays slightly better defense. That's an upgrade, and any upgrade can matter, especially in a tight division race. To not try a move that has extremely low risk with the potential for a medium to high reward, when 1 win could be the difference in the division, would be inexcusable.
  14. My latest mission has been to figure out how to run in the hot/humid Florida summer. It isn't easy but I can now handle a heat index of up to 90-95 if I carry a water belt and use gels/electrolyte tablets on runs over 10 miles. Having been in similar weather in New Orleans, I think it's worth it going through the summer to get the winter. Lots of ideal running conditions through the late fall and into the winter time. As a non-fan of snow/ice/WI winter running, I very much enjoyed my time down there http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif.
  15. So is Mad River Bar the brewerfan.net recommend bar to go to before the game? Anyone ever been to Kettle of Fish, that's another recommended bar I found online for Brewer fans. Bummer I didn't see this until now; but I'll post this anyways for the record. I did go to Kettle of Fish when we were in New York during the opening weekend of March Madness. It was an awesome place to get a beer and watch a Badger game, so I'd imagine it would have been a great place to see some fellow Wisconsinites or ex-Wisconsinites before going to the game. The owner is a huge Wisconsin sports fan and gets pretty into the games while he's working...makes for a good atmosphere.
  16. Both will be affected. If more balls are in play logically there will be more hits and fewer guys stranded. True, but LD% alone doesn't quite explain his LOB% being as low as it is.
  17. Go back and look at the fangraphs article posted in this tread. His LOB can be explained by his line drive rate being higher. That is not luck. The following is a direct quote from the article: "Finally, Greinke’s LOB% has dropped to a completely unsustainable level. Only 55.2% of the batters Greinke puts on base are being stranded. The league average for LOB% is typically 70% (Greinke’s career average is 71.7%), so we have to expect Greinke to improve there as well." Greinke's BABIP is more likely to be affected by a high LD%, not his LOB%. To tell how good a guy is compared to others may take three years. To compare how good he is against himself takes no time at all. I'm not sure what you're trying to say. I was replying directly to your statement: The upshot of that is Greinke has the same danged defense behind him as every other pitcher on this team. Yet with his defense being equal to the other pitchers he has not had nearly as good of results as they have. I don't think we can draw any conclusions from comparing our pitchers' ERAs because it would be highly unlikely that they've had the same defensive performance behind them.
  18. The upshot of that is Greinke has the same danged defense behind him as every other pitcher on this team. Yet with his defense being equal to the other pitchers he has not had nearly as good of results as they have. That makes some sense in theory. However, it neglects two pieces of information. 1) LOB%. Unless you believe that Greinke becomes a totally different pitcher when runners are on base (and has forgotten how to pitch with runners on base this year), his LOB% simply cannot be explained by anything other than bad luck. I'm not saying bad luck in that he's giving up weak base hits. I'm saying it's bad luck that the hits that he has given up have been bunched together so much. Over a longer period of time, we can only expect more runners to be left on base, bringing Zack's ERA down. He's been unlucky so far with this, causing a higher ERA that doesn't truly represent his pitching performance. 2) Sample size. Since it generally takes 3 years of data to get a good read on a defender's ability on defense, I highly doubt we can reasonably expect the same defense to put up the same or even similar statistics behind two different pitchers over half a season's worth of starts. I'd imagine if the defensive performance behind every Brewer starter this year was measured and compared, there would be some pretty wild discrepancies.
  19. If a catcher hits like a stud LF or 1B, than he certainly should be in contention for MVP. Sure, but McCann is only hitting like Braun in some cherrypicked situations. In all situations, he's quite a bit behind Braun in the batting department. Also, FWIW, fangraphs has McCann's defensive value listed as negative. I believe they've had some trouble quantifying catcher defense in the past, so take that for what it's worth.
  20. To piggyback off of what zzzmanwitz said, yes, FIP,WAR, etc. do a very good job of telling us what to expect going forward. However, the other function of these stats is that they do a good job of isolating events on the baseball field and telling us how well a pitcher performed on the stuff he could control. Greinke has done well for the most part on the stuff he can control (K's, BBs). His LD% is higher than usual, and he has given up quite a few HR/FB. So while he hasn't been perfect with what he controls, Greinke has done pretty well overall. The stuff that he doesn't control (LOB%, BABIP) have been unsustainably below average, causing his ERA and "results" to appear poor. However, this doesn't mean that Greinke has been pitching poorly. It means that he has been pitching well in general, but he has run into bad luck, defense, etc.
  21. Backupcatchers, you might also be looking for WPA instead of WAR. See rluzinski's post above for a good description. That seems to be exactly what you're looking for. Those of us who use WAR are more interested in finding out how players have done with the stuff that they can control (instead of the stuff they can't really control, like LOB% for instance). Fangraphs WAR takes that into account by using FIP for pitchers, etc.
  22. My inlaws had the same issue with their old Dell laptop. They just replaced the battery and it works now....you might be able to do that?
  23. This is like telling a basketball fan to go watch the And 1 Mixtape tour. Fair enough, but to continue the analogy, MLS in Milwaukee wouldn't be any better than having a D league team.
  24. New Orleans--personally, I think Bourbon St. is pretty overrated; especially at night. If you're into walking around with a giant mob of drunk people, then sure. But otherwise, I'd hit up the rest of the French Quarter. Definitely make sure you eat down there. If you like seafood, look up Deanie's in the French Quarter. It's phenomenal. But in reality, you can't really go wrong with many restaurants down there.
  25. Me too! I was actually at a Niners-Saints game in New Orleans the day the Brewers clinched the playoffs. I was going nuts in my Niners jersey while exiting the stadium after a bad 49ers loss and getting continuous cell phone updates on the Brewer game (when they took the lead). All the Saints fans thought I was crazy.
