  1. I think Hornets does work pretty well for New Orleans, because there are a lot of them (or wasps or some crazy bee-like things) down here. I think it's a decent name if there's no chance of getting Jazz back from Utah. I also don't really understand why team names should have an "s" after them. I hear people say that as though it's common knowledge all the time, but I've never heard an actual reason for it.
  2. I just got back to New Orleans after a week up in Wisconsin. Man, it's nice to have 80 degree days in the winter.
  3. I'm in New Orleans, and we got a good deal of snow (for down here at least) this morning. There was a little bit of accumulation and everything. It was pretty cool to experience such a rare event down here, even though it's something I'm pretty used to.
  4. I was at the 49ers Saints game in New Orleans and getting constant updates. As I was leaving the stadium in my 49ers jersey, I was getting razzed by all the Saints fans after a crappy football game, but I was in my own world, hearing over the phone and celebrating/cheering as the Brewers won and eventually as the Marlins closed it out. I'm sure I looked like a moron to everyone, but I don't care. The Brewers are in the playoffs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!#@W$R@!#$!@!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11111
  5. I'm really nervous about it too, but at the same time it feels good to have the chance to still make the playoffs. It's going to be real hard for me tomorrow though. I'll have to miss out on news of the first 2+ hours of the game because I'll be at the Superdome where for some reason no one cares about the Brewers.
  6. If Ben really is gone, which it seems like he will be, I hate to see him go even though it doesn't make a whole lot of sense to bring him back. I've been a Sheets apologist for a while now, and I'll certainly miss him when he's gone. P.S. Can't we all just get along?
  7. However, it is often portrayed that the area "still has not recovered"...well, it has, it's just lots of folks decided living in a high risk area was dumb, so they chose to go elsewhere. I'm sorry, but that's an incredibly ignorant and incorrect statement. Many houses still are getting repaired as we speak (well, not so much right now, but before Gustav got in the way and work will resume in the near future, I'm sure). Particularly the poorer neighborhoods still have a long way to go, and that's not because people decided to go elsewhere. As for Gustav, it looks like the damage was pretty bad throughout the entire state with the massive power outages and whatnot, but it's good to see that the massive evacuation plan seemed to work out well. We'll see how long it takes to get all the power back throughout the city. Original word from electric companies was 4-6 weeks before all power is restored, but they're working to get it taken care of much faster than that.
  8. The kid the Nats got is 23 and doing well in AAA That's a pretty big stretch. He's batting .302/.348/.387. I wouldn't call a .735 OPS in AAA doing well, even for a middle infielder/center fielder. Throw in that he's only had one decent season, in A ball, and I don't see him as much of a haul. EDIT: Thanks for beating me to the punch, TLB. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/devil.gif
  9. That gives the Diamondbacks a pretty solid back end of the bullpen. I'm not sure who will close, as Lyon has done a great job up to his last two appearances, and a solid job nonetheless. I'm also kind of shocked that Bonifacio is all it took to get Rauch. Looking at his numbers, he looks a lot like Alcides Escobar, but at a less premium defensive position and older. Great acquisition for the snakes.
  10. Just reported on ESPN. They didn't mention who Arizona gave up, though.
  11. It was a good movie. It was not the amazing achievement in film some would have you believe. Heath Ledger was good as the Joker. But the "Oscar buzz" is based mostly on his untimely death. Harvey Dent was great for the first half of the movie. The second half was forced and a pretty ridiculous. I think I agree almost completely with the above comments. I do think Heath Ledger's role was hyped partially because of his death, but I also think he did a fantastic job of acting. We'll never know if his acting would have stood alone without his death or not. I couldn't stand Harvey Dent for a lot of the movie either. He didn't seem like a very good actor, particularly when we got to the 2nd half. "Forced" is the perfect word to describe it. Other than that, though....I thought the movie was pretty solid. I was thoroughly entertained.
  12. For the record, if they were to make a choice between the two, its Sabathia and its not close. He's younger, better, and doesn't have the injury history. He has more innings on him, but that's because he hasn't spent 1/3 of his career on the DL. I completely disagree A) If you assume 34 starts per year is an entire season, Ben Sheets has missed only 16% of his career (not to mention he's never had arm trouble). EDIT: obsessedwithbrewcrew beat me to the punch. B) Just because Sabathia is a big name and had 2 really good starts in a row doesn't make him a better pitcher than Ben. His career ERA is higher than Sheets's, his ERA+ is 116 to Ben's 115, and his career WHIP is 1.26 to Ben's 1.20. Also, Sabathia has never put up an ERA under 3.2 in his career (143 ERA+), while Sheets' 2004 and 2008 campaign so far have been far better than that. Don't get me wrong, I like CC and all, but I think we have a natural tendency to overvalue novelty compared to something great that we're used to seeing.
  13. I've been a pretty big Yost defender in the past (mostly due to the overall poor quality of the managing pool and Ned's theoretical potential to learn from past mistakes), but I just can't wrap my mind around this one whatsoever. It makes no rational sense that 29 random ballparks should have any effect on how a person pitches. The only thing that can happen here is that it screws with the pitchers by making them skip normal starts and lose any routine they might have had. Also, how can one defend sending Dave Bush to the bullpen after what he's done lately? My only hope is that McClung has a bad first start, Bush has two good starts, and Ned finally realizes how dumb of an idea that was to begin with.
  14. I don't think Ned should really be pondering starting Kapler, much less leading him off. If it turns out I'm wrong, so be it, but I've never seen a dude suck for a lot of his career, take a year off and suddenly become a good player at age 32. Also, Kapler is still hitting about .040 points above his expected average given his very high BABIP, and his slugging percentage is far above anything he's ever done in his career. I'd expect him to regress back toward his career stats. As for Weeks, I expect his average to steadily climb because he is hitting for a very low BABIP right now. I'd conservatively guess Weeks would bat about .250-.260 from here forward, getting on base around a .360 clip and slugging around .400-.420. That would be a solid leadoff hitter, and probably our best choice to bat leadoff, IMHO.
  15. I understand that Dillon has had limited playing time and what-not, but Rickie Weeks is still outhitting him this year (although not by much). Throw in the fact that Rickie has a .240 BABIP to Dillon's .289, and that tells me that Rickie has seen quite a bit of bad luck this year, while Dillon's luck isn't likely to improve too much. (Rickie's career BABIP is .297.) I think he deserves a chance to keep playing out the year, particularly because the options behind him are pretty bad as well as because of what he is capable of (see last year).
  16. One of the ESPN radio shows had a contest for naming the team, and the best suggestion I heard was the O(klahoma) C(ity) Umenyoras.
  17. True, I should have said a Jeff Francoeur with more power. Francoeur does have a much better walk rate than Braun this year, though. Also, his BABIP is well below his career numbers, so one would guess that his average will climb.
  18. I'm more worried about his putrid OBP than what kind of records he may break 8 years down the line. He really needs to work on that to be anything more than a Jeff Francoeur.
  19. from what I saw the coaches did not deserve the sending off. That's my point. Odds are pretty good that we're not going to see or hear what they did to warrant the sending off. What got to me was that Andy Gray didn't even bother to give the referee any benefit of the doubt there. These guys are the best at what they do, too, and it's pretty absurd to insinuate that he's throwing coaches out of the game without a right to do so according to the laws of the game. Yet that's what Andy Gray did for the rest of that half. Other points: I don't believe the ref was Howard Webb. It's easy to get an extremely close offside call correct when you have that fancy axis spin technology thing that ESPN uses, and when you have a pause button.
  20. I have to bump this thread up to complain about the announcers yesterday. I think it might have been Andy Gray or whoever it was covering the Germany-Austria game really got on my nerves. The dude started going on a huge rant about the referee having a bad day for throwing out both coaches and he wouldn't stop berating or ridiculing the ref from his announcer booth. I think it seems pretty obvious that the referee had a reason to make the coaches leave, and it's also a pretty good chance that it was because of stuff they were saying. Because ESPN's announcer isn't on the field, he can't hear what's going on, so why in the heck should he be blatantly ripping into a world-class referee for something which he knows little to nothing about? I really can't stand the referee bashing that has been going on constantly throughout the tournament, but this in particular made me kind of angry. Get off your high horse, dude. Back to the action, it's too bad the Dutch had to win today. It would have been nice to see France and Italy both leave early after how poorly they had been playing.
  21. I have a red and white pair that I got for free at a Badger game once. I probably would wear them because they were free and comfortable if I didn't already have really comfortable $5 Birkenstock knock-offs. I guess I just fail to understand why everyone's so concerned with how they look, let alone how their feet look. Obviously, they're a bad call for formal settings, but anything else like catching a ballgame, hanging out, whatever, I don't see the problem. P.S. Whoever said sweatpants aren't socially acceptable....why not? Also, I rarely comb my hair and I think I'm a functioning member of society (could be wrong, though). And I know plenty of people who don't shave who are also functioning members of society. Your point seems pretty sketchy.

  23. offensive players are able to step out of bounds to avoid being offsides Correct, but I believe in that case it has more to do with them not being involved in the play than with them being out of bounds.
  24. Not to get too far off topic, but why can't you stand Ronaldo? I don't know, he's just one of those guys that irks me sometimes. Probably has something to do with how he used to fall down dramatically whenever he got breathed on or looked at funny. I also have never really liked Manch. U. very much, either, so I don't like him by default. He may very well have matured over the past few years, but I guess I don't give him the benefit of the doubt. Don't get me wrong, he's an amazing player to watch, he just rubs me the wrong way I guess. Sidenote: I loved watching him screw up the penalty kick twice in the Champions League final by taking it illegally and still missing.
