  1. Announcers and fans of the Bo system love to point out the lack of turnovers and taking care fo the ball, and WI's assist to turnover ratio. Wi's tempo is so freaking slow that of course they don't have many turnovers, there are fewer possesions to even turn the ball over in. Wisconsin led the nation in TO rate, also (and it's not even close...2nd place is .9% back, 11th place is already 3% back). That's % of possessions resulting in a turnover. It's a stat that's completely independent of time, and it tells you more than A/T ratio. Not turning the ball over is a ton more important than assisting on baskets. Blaming the Badgers' low turnover totals solely on their slow tempo of play would be severely misguided.
  2. If they would have given some effort like this the whole game Not trying to pick specifically on you, but I've been hearing this throughout the game from Johnson, Miller, etc. Do people really believe that Wisconsin wasn't putting forth effort in this game or not trying or not "wanting it" or whatever you want to call it? I highly doubt you'll find anyone on this team that wasn't putting forth 100% effort the entire game.
  3. I don't know....a lot of these second half missed shots are either coming from inside or a wide open look from the outside; just nothing's falling. Contrary to the constant drone of the announcers, I think the Badgers have been playing very well in the 2nd half, the good looks just haven't fallen.
  4. Do injured players get to travel now? I don't understand how that wasn't called traveling on Smith. I know it sucks he got hurt, but he still clearly traveled with the ball in the process.
  5. The Butler way looks like the Badger way. Interestingly enough...it kind of is (or was, at least). http://www.midmajority.com/p/1997 Excerpt: The Butler Way is old, new, blue, and most definitely borrowed. It belonged to Dick Bennett first. He was the head coach at Wisconsin-Green Bay from 1985-1995. In the late stages of his successful time there, two mid-major head coaches -- Jim Larranaga (then at Bowling Green) and Butler's Barry Collier -- met with him. Instead of sharing the secrets of the packline pressure defense, Bennett gave them The Way. Except that he called them his "five non-negotiables." This meeting really happened. I'm not making it up. Within two decades, each of the three men in that room went to the Final Four. Larranaga with George Mason in 2006, Collier as Butler athletic director in 2010. EDIT: P.S. Valpo, care to share where you pulled that 75% figure from?
  6. I totally agree, Stevo. I had never seen Fredette play until tonight, and my first thought was how lazy he looked on defense.
  7. plus Bucknell in non-conference, as good a team or better than Clemson The stats tend to strongly disagree with that statement. Pomeroy has Bucknell at 90 and Clemson at 24. FWIW, he also has Marquette at 33 and Michigan at 40.
  8. Yikes. If UW is going to make it to the sweet 16, they'll probably have to beat the two best cinderella candidates. Then, if they do that, Bo will get no credit from anyone because they'll only beat a 13 and a 12, even though Utah State and Belmont are both better than 5 seed Kansas State.
  9. I voted for Fielder because I mistook the term "offensive" to mean batting only. After further reading, I would probably consider switching to Weeks. My bad.
  10. I think Jeter is being pretty ridiculous if that's what he's really seeking. He holds little to no power in the negotiations; he can either take above market value from the Yankees or go somewhere else for less. I don't see any way that he gets what he reportedly wants. Good for the Yankees for not paying him just for the sake of paying him.
  11. Depending on how you define a number 1, you can probably make an argument either way. I think, going strictly by the phrase "number 1", Yo would have to be a number 1 as he is clearly one of the top 30 pitchers in the major leagues. If you assign some arbitrary definition to a number 1 outside of being a number 1 starter, then sure, it's arguable. However, none of this really matters either way. It's all semantics. My whole point is that a number 1 starter is not what the Brewers lacked this year. They lacked production from the number 2-5 starters. To call out your best pitcher like that when he was by far better than all the other starters on the team is a little bit out of line, if you ask me.
  12. He threw Yo under the bus a little bit too.
  13. My favorite part of that letter was all the random quotation marks. Some of them made sense in a way, but some of them were completely pointless and made no sense whatsoever. I totally think Dan Gilbert comes out of this looking like a complete tool.
  14. I was listening on the radio in and out. Man, I wish I would have been able to see the game, particularly the 2nd half. Sounds like an awesome game to watch.
  15. It doesn't get much more exciting than this. Wow....what a game.
  16. Wow...what a goal by Suarez to send Uruguay up 2-1, just when South Korea was starting to control the game more and more.
  17. That gave me goosebumps and made me wish I had been in a packed soccer pub somewhere instead of in a BWW with about 5 other people. Nonetheless, that moment was still amazing.
  18. Yeah, I definitely have more of a problem with the 2nd yellow card than with the offside call. An offside that close--even when you're in perfect position, and especially in a loud stadium where I'd assume you wouldn't be able to hear the kicking of the ball--is a really tough call to get right. I can understand that call being blown, and that's just going to be a difficult part of the sport. But the 2nd yellow for the captain, that's pretty inexcusable, especially with how much the other two were in the referee's face. I don't know how you could choose the wrong player. That being said, it is possible that the captain said something while appearing to be innocently shepherding his players away from the referee. But I think that scenario is rather unlikely.
  19. A barefoot/"minimalist" shoe doesn't have to be for an advanced runner. I'd just suggest doing lots of research about barefoot running to inform your decision. There's some evidence that points to this possibly being better for your knees/hips/back, etc. in the long run (pun unintended) as long as you take your time and switch from shod running to barefoot/minimalist VERY SLOWLY to avoid injuring your calves, etc. I'd also recommend searching what a barefoot stride should look like. That can be very helpful for visualizing and confirming or disconfirming whether your stride is adjusting to the new shoes appropriately. Also, for an update: I finally bit the bullet and ponied up for a barefoot shoe. I ordered the RunAmoc Lite from Softstar Shoes (Softstarshoes.com). It should be arriving tomorrow. I'm excited to take them out for a run this week.
  20. I really can't stand Alexi Lalas (post 1990's) and all the other announcers, particularly their whining about Kaka's red card. If the referee had truly believed the IC player had been hit in the face, Kaka would have gotten a straight red, not a second yellow. The grabbing of the face clearly did not influence the referees decision. But an elbow to the chest off the ball and nowhere near the play is completely unnecessary and definitely deserving of a yellow card for unsporting behavior. I really wish the announcers and commentators understood the laws of the game.
  21. I tried some straight barefoot running last summer (I didn't really feel like paying $70 if I could possibly get a similar feel for free). I didn't do it often enough to build up the calluses needed to go much more than a couple miles, but I will probably try to do some more barefoot running this summer as well. Definitely take your time working up the distance you go barefoot, because even if it doesn't hurt while you're running, it'll hurt for a few days after you're done if you go too far too soon.
  22. True...but not that Washington over New Mexico is a killer upset (it's probably not even an upset at all). That's the consolation prize for the NCAA committee's seeding methods: it creates even more drama when an underseeded team beats up on an overseeded team. As for the Kansas-UNI game, I'm still shocked. That was fun to watch.
  23. Hey Everybody, Nike is doing some sort of promotion where they are giving grants to organizations that use sports to help out young people I spent last year in New Orleans doing stuff for Americorps, and the community center that I worked/lived at is trying to get a grant through Nike to improve their basketball court. The court currently is used twice weekly for a basketball/mentoring program run by a friend of mine (and also used throughout the rest of the week for after-school programs and the like). However, the court is much smaller than regulation size, and is cracking and in need of resurfacing. They are hoping to re-do the court and extend it to make it better for the kids to use. To get the grant, they need lots of votes, because the top few vote-getters in a city get a grant. If anyone is interested in helping out, the voting goes until September 15. To vote, please go to http://www.nikebackyourblock.com/ApplicantProfile.aspx?ApplicantId=2b712d80-875e-4585-b9c9-e25a0342f14c and type in an email address. You can vote once a day per email address. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
  24. It probably will be tough to build up for your marathon, but it is also possible. Be careful and listen to your body as others have suggested. I would suggest checking out runnersworld.com for some tips for training. They have a lot of good resources there, and there are a few training plans for first-timers. One thing they tend to stress is that you can do a marathon while training 4-5 days a week. I just did my first marathon in February, and I started running from scratch (although with somewhat of a cardio base from other sports) in October. I know it wasn't ideal, and I actually encountered a few problems because I tried to do too much too fast (I tried to incorporate some speed training and my knee wasn't ready for it). However, I still was able to complete the marathon, and if your goal is to finish, not necessarily to run it too terribly fast, you should be fine. Just be careful and don't overdo it, and good luck!
  25. I know this is a small sample and it's kind of cherrypicking stats, but it appears that Weeks remembered that he needs to walk recently. Since April 26th, the first time he walked after opening day, his walk rate has been at 11.1%, which is around where his expected walk rate should be. Take it for what it's worth because we really can't tell what's going on at this point, but it is possible that Weeks has broken out of his walk-less funk and is turning back into the OBP machine we all knew and loved.
