  1. The Dbacks are 5-27 in their last 32 games. That’s an impressive level of incompetency, especially for a team that has at least some talent on paper. And their June schedule looks brutal.
  2. That won't cut it unfortunately. I'm not really worried yet because they shot so poorly, but it does feel now like they have to win on Monday. If you assume this series is going 6-7 games, it’s not the end of the world to head home down 0-2. If the Bucks win on Monday they will be in really good shape. I tend to think some of the takes in this thread are going to age poorly. Middleton will be fine. The 3 pt shooting will improve. Too much underdog mentality by the fans. R-E-L-A-X.
  3. I’m not worried until they lose a home game.
  4. Gotta lose 2 to win in six.
  5. This is a golden opportunity to steal the first game with Harden out and the Bucks not playing their best.
  6. I say ban him for the weekend. Let's spice things up around here. I didn’t know we could jinx no hitters on a message board?
  7. Just tuned in...Freddy with the no-no! Too many pitches though. Maybe we can get a combined no-hitter tonight?
  8. It's Joe West. If he can get 50% of the calls right at this point, call it a win and move on.
  9. The LeBron/Jordan comparisons drive me nuts. Completely different eras and scenarios. If I learned anything from watching the Last Dance it's that the Bulls were not any good until the right group of people were put around Jordan, and then they were so good that when Jordan retired they still made the EC finals anyway. Winning championships with 3 different teams/coaches is a completely different accomplishment from what the Bulls did. The Lakers losing this year was no big surprise, LeBron knew they were toast and he looked completely exhausted/defeated. Whatever. The bigger crime is the garbage around Damian Lillard in Portland. If you want to know how far one player can get you, that's it. One of the greatest playoff performances of all-time in game 5 and they still lost. Anyway...the NBA is full of superstars these days and even a "big 3" like the Nets have isn't good enough to cruise to a championship. We're about to witness them lose to the Bucks in six games, and I'll enjoy every second of it.
  10. I just commented on this in the foreign substance thread, but across MLB we're seeing a trend toward single inning relief outings as well as a reduction in back-to-back appearances. The reason for doing this is that pitchers are far more effective when throwing at 100%. Same with the 'third time through the order' numbers with starting pitchers. The analytics say to do it, but it presents an interesting opportunity for rule changes to increase offense by making it more difficult for teams to constantly rotate through fresh arms.
  11. It's going to be interesting to see how this plays out. Pitchers often argue that it's a safety issue related to grip. While that is true to an extent, it can obviously be mitigated by not trying to throw the ball at 100% effort every single pitch. In other words, being a more effective pitcher instead of just a thrower. I found myself agreeing with almost everything in this article, which addresses the use of pitchers in general (and also helped me understand why Counsell has started treating Hader differently): https://defector.com/we-need-a-restrictor-plate-for-pitchers/
  12. Update on Hiura: 1-30 / 16Ks/ 2 BBs Update on Yelich: 8-42 / 18Ks / 9 BBs / 1 HR / 4 RBIs You forgot to calculate Hiura's OPS for me, so how can I know if that is a good or bad stat line? This is signature-worthy material!
  13. The Brewers need 3 of 4. If they only get 2 of 4, they might have to win an extra game in the remaining 103 games to keep pace. 1 of 4 and they might be as many as 4.5 games out of the wild card with 103 to play. If they get swept they probably will have to sweep another series in the next 4 months to catch back up. Or their competition might lose also and they will be in the same spot they were today at the end of the weekend.
  14. Interesting stuff. Hiura is the first Brewers prospect I've seen that epitomizes the post-analytics approach to hitting. He really only has one swing mode -- hard, all of the time -- and with an uppercut optimized for launch angle. Between that and the timing issues it makes him a one trick pony at the plate and he has shown zero ability to adapt his swing to hit the high pitches. Monty's Narvaez comparison makes a ton of sense in this context. I know it's not a popular opinion but if I were the Brewers I would think about trading Hiura at the deadline. Yelich...I'm worried like everyone else, but at least it hasn't hurt the team to have Yelich in the lineup the way that it does to play Hiura. -1.2 bWAR, 3rd worst in MLB. At least Yelich has been replacement level.
  15. Watching the Brewers face Soto is everything that is wrong with baseball right now.
  16. 16-11 (1) vs Detroit 1-0 (4) vs Arizona 2-2 (3) @ Cincinnati 2-1 (3) vs Pittsburgh 2-1 (3) vs Cincinnati 3-0 (4) @ Colorado 2-2 (3) @ Arizona 1-2 (3) vs Colorado 2-1 (3) vs Chicago 1-2
  17. Football and basketball are paying for a bunch of rich kids to go to school for free playing golf or rowing or whatever. At least at Wisconsin they bring in enough revenue to subsidize the other sports. I work for a university where the football program loses money and yet they continue to throw more money at it, while the academic departments fight for table scraps. It’s absurd. In my view athletic scholarships should be reserved for families in lower income brackets. Then maybe Wisconsin could afford a baseball team.
