  1. I can only speak about my personal experience, but I was terribly un-athletic as a preteen and was always the worst player on the team in little league, basketball, and soccer. Despite that, I generally look back on it as a fun experience to try different sports. I really wanted to be good at baseball but after batting .000 for an entire season it was time to hang up the cleats. I eventually figured out that I was more talented as a runner and had more success doing track in middle school...then I got fairly good at bowling in high school which is a sport better catered to the un-athletic types. As a new dad I know things have gotten way more competitive since then and I will resist with all my power to enroll my daughter in overly competitive sports leagues. Especially the travel ones. I've seen how stressed out parents can get over having to drive their kids all over town on nights and weekends, or even spending weekends driving hours to cheap hotels in random suburbs so the kids can play in some stupid tournament. Who knows what the kid will find interest in, but certainly as a parent I'll be pushing for diversification of extracurricular activities. I'm also happy for the recent college sports scandal + investigations that have shown non-revenue college sports to be a big scam. I think it will be easier to push back as a parent now than it was a few years ago.
  2. I generally dislike crypto because the blockchain is such a terrible, energy wasting concept, but my $50 investment in dogecoin was briefly worth $160 so it's hard to complain about that. I understand that the value of everything in this world is somewhat arbitrary, but NFTs are such a late-stage capitalism creation that I can't even wrap my head around how pointless they are. But if there's money to be made, well...invest away I guess.
  3. I have to say, I really like Sogard in a Cubs uniform. He might be my favorite Cubs player of all time.
  4. Yeah he gave that 3-1 pitch a nice ride but that's a scenario where he needs to be hitting a Vogelbomb to stay on the team. It feels like the 1B position is under the curse of Prince Fielder.
  5. MLB batting average is .235 so far this year, historically sigma=.027 so we're at the stage where 10% of MLB hitters would be expected to be batting under .200 over a full season.
  6. I just love the experimentation, we all know that the rules haven't kept up with the analytics revolution and the product has suffered. Best way to improve the game is to test things out before trying it at the MLB level.
  7. I would throw behind Contreras, it might get called a strike if he leans any farther over the plate.
  8. That is INSANE. I paid $30 for 1/2" OSB sheets last August and I thought I was getting ripped off at the time. I also accidentally bought 5 too many which are sitting unused, might have been a better investment than the stock market! I can already see that people's spending patterns are going to rapidly shift back to travel and social gatherings in the second half of 2021 so I bet the market will correct.
  9. Based on what we paid last year I think the going rate for a bathroom renovation is in the ~$50K range in my location. Labor adds up fast when minimum wage is $16/hr. Materials are absurd also -- lumber has doubled since the start of the pandemic. My house was built in 1940 so there's bound to be work to do, but I can't stand how 90% of new construction is designed. Gigantic, unwelcoming boxes with almost no yard space, cheap materials, wasted square footage everywhere. Old houses lack closet space (fixed that with the reno) but I don't need 5 walk-in closets either...
  10. Meh, getting lucky doesn't win you 96 regular season games with one of the lowest payrolls in MLB. I'm a bit confused where all this concern is coming from. The 2021 team looks pretty good so far. We all knew they were going to struggle with a tough schedule in April but if they can continue to float around .500 they will be fine. Several important pieces -- Shaw and Narvaez -- are off to good starts. They finally got rid of Arcia, everyone had been asking for that for years. They are not going to leave their starters in for 100+ pitches this early. Nobody does that. They will reshuffle bullpen roles if certain guy struggle. What else is there to do barely one week into the season? It's 162, not 60 this year. There's time. As for the low OPS, that's nearly all Hiura at this point.
  11. I think CC has always managed for a 162-game season and his early-season management style has paid huge dividends in August and September.
  12. Love the guy, wouldn't mind him getting a couple of ABs with the big league club if we need a guy to fill in. Never, ever let him play the outfield though.
  13. Any thoughts I had about the Brewers having a bad offense were erased when I watched the Mariners the other night. League-wide batting average is currently .236. There are 20 teams that look as bad as the Brewers. If you want to win in the current version of MLB, you need to figure out how to win with 5-7 hits per game. That means drawing walks and slugging. If that's the approach they are going for, I would keep doing it until Manfred changes the rules.
  14. Sad to see Arcia go but not surprising given that Shaw looks competent and Urias is not a 3B. I really believed Arcia would develop into at least an average shortstop offensively. Wishing the best for him in Atlanta.
  15. Soooo...I wanted to see Ohtani last night on Sunday Night Baseball, fired up MLB.tv and realized that it's blacked out. What??? I think this is the first time I ever wanted to watch Sunday Night Baseball and MLB doesn't even let me do it. Ridiculous. (...of course I had a free stream up in about 30 seconds but still, it's the principle of the matter...)
  16. Yep. They only have basketball, so all of their resources go to basketball. I read something a while back, maybe when they hired Wojo, that in terms of resources dedicated to the program plus playing in a NBA arena made Marquette a top-10 program in terms of total resources dedicated to basketball. Yep, whenever USA Today or other outlets compile lists of the top spending programs, they always make it. There's a lot of murkiness due to non-standard accounting between schools and further lack of transparency given they're private, but no doubt they spent a lot. Conversely, I've also seen a list or two that follow up on that with the "worst ROI" programs in terms of success for what they spend, and they're high on that list. Jeff Goodman was explaining that last week re: Wojo, and how the performance given what they invest was even more egregious. First 8 years in the Big East: 8 NCAA tourney appearances 3 Sweet-16 appearances (1 elite-8) 5 AP top-25 finishes Next 8 years in the Big East: 2 NCAA tourney appearances 0 NCAA tourney wins 0 AP top-25 finishes Most of that is on Wojo, we all know there's been talent on the roster.
  17. Let's keep politics out of this thread pretty please :) Plenty else to talk about such as where the game will be moved to.
  18. New owner trying to make a splash. Attanasio learned his lesson after Garza and Cohen will learn from this one as well. Or he’ll get his ring and nobody will care what they are paying Lindor after that.
  19. I'll gladly make the Opening Day hot take that we'll be begging for Eddie to be back by the end of April.
