  1. Ha! Fortunately, Mrs. Nodakfan’s maiden name is equally ridiculous, so she had few reservations about taking my last name. We purposely gave our son a middle name (‘Taylor’) that could function as a last name in case he ever wanted to adopt a DBA name. We are a proud people, but not that proud. When you got married you didn't hyphenate last names? I had a substitute teacher in grade school (last millennia) who was Mr. Kookenen-Flashberger. I never understood why they didn't just pick "Smith" or something... I recently hyphenated my last name, it's almost as big of a mouthful as Kookenen-Flashberger. 17 letters. I consider it to be a formality, nobody ever needs to read or pronounce the whole thing. Thanks to autofill I don't even have to type it. It's easy to shorten it or use the initials. The main reason for doing it was to make it easier to travel internationally with a child. You don't want to have your child have a different last name than the parents. Interestingly, after I hyphenated and had a baby I started getting targeted ads for women's clothing on Instagram. A good example of how systematic bias sneaks into AI algorithms...
  2. Counsell is still the manager, right? After 10 games we'll have used 10 different lineups.
  3. What we need now is someone to take this seriously and respond with a 1,000 word essay.
  4. I really don't care to watch college basketball if that is a foul.
  5. The maximum allowed attendance vs. actual attendance will be interesting to watch. At least personally I made it this far without catching 'rona so it seems dumb to risk it when a vaccine is only a few months away. I'll wait until the weather is nice in June or July to see a baseball game. I'm sure many will be watching to see how the initial rollout goes. If it feels like a superspreader event I bet attendance will struggle to meet capacity.
  6. I don’t want to make assumptions but one doesn’t make this signing if Cain is expected to start 140-150 games. Or...they think the NL Central is wide open and decided to spend now rather than hold onto the cash for a trade deadline deal. We’ll see. I assume the DH situation also influenced the Brewers’ thinking. Braun is sitting around as a .750 OPS 4th OF/DH option but with no DH it makes more sense to spend that cash on defense—especially if Cain is a question mark. As for money...I measure success based on wins, not FA dollars spent.
  7. I believe the goal was to make the mascot kid-friendly. It's kind of amazing how the stadium looks now compared to when it opened 20 years ago. It was basically an empty warehouse back then compared with the shops/concessions/amenities that are offered now. Back then the focus was on restaurants/suites/club seating, but it seems like the club/300 level was never as popular as intended. If they built the stadium today I bet they wouldn't even include it and would have lowered the 400 level and moved it closer to the field. New stadiums put the premium seating on the 100 level these days. The tailgate-style group areas have become a big revenue source that was not anticipated in the original design.
  8. OMG. I'll let them name it Gruber Law stadium if they bring back the beer barrel on the bottom.
  9. Sweet jimmy, Toronto didn't let Blue Jay's play in Toronto this summer?? That's ridiculous. Utterly ridiculous. Umm...the US-Canada border is closed. Look at what the NHL is doing. The Canadian teams are stuck in their own division and can only play each other in Canada. The rules seems to be working since the Canadian NHL teams haven't had a single COVID cancellation to date.
  10. Seahawks fans are freaking out so I consider this a win.
  11. Half the problem in the playoffs in recent years has been the reliance on role players because Giannis hasn't been capable of taking over a game in the 4th quarter the way that LeBron or Steph Curry frequently do. If Giannis can continue to do what he did last night against top-tier competition, the Bucks will be in excellent shape come playoff time.
  12. Interesting that the Blue Jays have decided to fire their radio announcers and simulcast the TV feed over the radio, which will surely be a suboptimal listening experience. This is obviously a stupid decision but one wonders if the intent is to try and increase TV ratings...perhaps I'm being overly suspicious of their intentions...or not.
  13. Did he also get LASIK? If so then I'm all-in, World Series 2021.
  14. The MLB app is so great, I can't imagine not being able to consume Brewers games that way. Usually I'll have the game on the radio or be checking the score. If something interesting is happening I pull my phone out of my pocket and have the TV feed up within 20 seconds. I don't think I even have cable running to my house anymore, when I got fiber installed they took out the old cables. Between Amazon/Hulu/Netflix/PBS and the bunny ears we have plenty to watch.
  15. The US is about even on imports/exports now but it varies by region. The Gulf Coast is a big net exporter while other regions are net importers. The purpose of the Keystone pipeline was to get heavy crude from Canada to Gulf Coast refineries that were equipped to handle it. A big reason the pipeline got axed was that there wasn't much profit to be made on the oil from the Canadian tar sands. Expensive Alberta oil is only going to be profitable when gas is $3-$4/gallon anyway. And the transition to electric cars will happen before that is the case. Reduction in oil demand will keep prices in check. Since we're talking cars, the lease on our SUV ran out in December so we switched to a plug-in hybrid. Went from 25 to 50 mpg overall, although on local trips I run it entirely on electric. The purchase price was $9,000 more for the plug-in but after the $7,500 tax credit it comes pretty close to even. Not to mention the plug-in has more horsepower and better acceleration than the gas-only version. I'm sure it's the last hybrid I ever buy...the next one will be all-electric.
  16. Also, how much do you drive / what car do you drive that makes the difference between $2.00 and $2.60 significant???
  17. It's too early for summer blend gas, this is all related to the refinery shutdowns in Texas. It takes 2-3 weeks for them to restart the refineries so I bet prices are really high in March. I haven't looked at how much I'm driving but it can't be more than 250 miles/month right now. We get everything delivered now and there's nowhere to go in the pandemic.
  18. I have seen few if any complaints from Mariners fans about payroll or the state of the rebuild. The fanbase had bought into it and was quite happy with the state of the rebuild as of last week. It was quite an impressive achievement when you consider the playoff drought--although Seattle has won 85+ games in 3 of the last 6 full seasons so it's not like they have been a complete disaster.
  19. There are about 25 other 'hot' cities in the US that are going through the same thing as Madison and the story is always the same--huge pushback whenever any new development is proposed. Only a small percentage of demand gets met within city limits. Development ends up sprawling outward which puts additional pressure on highways/infrastructure to keep up. Lower quality of life for those that have to commute into the city (although COVID has reduced commuting which is a good thing). At this point I think most people in urban planning recognize the downsides of restrictive zoning laws and more cities will follow the lead of Minneapolis in removing single-family zoning. I know I mentioned it earlier in the thread but I am now allowed to build 2 additional units on my lot in Seattle (although not everyone can do this, I'm allowed to because we are a block away from a bus route). My neighbor is putting a unit on top of their garage right now. So maybe that's how some of the housing pressure will get relieved in the long run. We looked into adding a unit but in the end we decided to put the renovation money into the master suite--not the best choice for ROI but certainly the best choice for our comfort.
  20. The Big Ten is also insanely good. Depending on the NCAA tournament draw they have a reasonable chance at making it past the first weekend.
  21. JosephC, you're giving Mather too much credit for getting the stadium money. The Mariners' stadium is a public asset so the county was backed into a corner from the initial agreements when the stadium was built. He only got $135 million of the $180 million that was asked for...$5.4 million/year. Not saying it isn't a taxpayer scam because it is, but it's not like he did anything special to get a continuation of the current agreement at 75% of what was requested. Mather will get fired, and yes, the reason will mostly be for speaking openly about practices that all 30 franchises are engaging in, thus damaging MLB's bargaining position in the upcoming CBA negotiations. -- A take from a Mariners fan blog: https://www.lookoutlanding.com/platform/amp/2021/2/22/22294815/kevin-mather-trampled-the-seattle-mariners-seeds-of-hope-president-ceo-john-stanton-owner?utm_campaign=lookoutlanding&utm_content=chorus&utm_medium=social&utm_source=twitter&__twitter_impression=true Plus this statement from the Mariners' subreddit:
  22. He’ll be fired today. It’s the weekend or it would have been done already. You all can rationalize it however you want but the amount of damage done here is severe. Which is kind of impressive because Mariners fans already hate the Mariners as an organization and I didn’t even think there was this much collateral to destroy—but they had done a good job marketing the prospects which of course was all wiped out over the weekend.
  23. "The vastness of the stadium itself, which spans 1.2 million square feet with a retractable roof and retractable panels, which the Brewers would keep open more often in 2021 – even in colder weather, as long as there is no precipitation." https://www.mlb.com/brewers/news/brewers-submit-occupancy-plan-for-american-family-field Ohhhh, so they are planning on closing the roof if it rains. Interesting.
  24. There are several ways that aerosols can disperse...diffusion is just one pathway. If you close the roof you are obviously going to be reducing advection of aerosols. Running the HVAC at full blast isn't going to do anything near what the wind and outdoor air currents can do to disperse aerosols. This should be pretty obvious based on what happens inside of the AmClamshell on a hot summer evening when they have to keep the roof closed due to the threat of rain. Plus the highly-contagious variants are going to be around this summer which we may or may not be immune to after vaccination. So yeah...the roof isn't going to be closed. It will be funny when the Brewers have a rain delay.
