  1. At this point the most likely disaster scenario is losing the wild card game. This team would be very, very dangerous in a postseason series and it would be a shame to not have that opportunity. That's why it has to be petal-to-the-medal to try and catch the Cubs.
  2. Recruiters love side projects because it shows initiative. At least for data science (which I've been considering moving into after I finish my dissertation), they like if you have projects that are available on the web--code on github, writeup on a blog, and/or posts on twitter. Plus it's more fun and easier than taking structured classes since you can do the projects on whatever interests you. I've also considered a data science bootcamp but decided that it isn't for me right now. Another thing that people want is some experience with machine learning--it seems that many people interested in the field started by taking one of the MOOCs, usually the Andrew Ng Stanford one although I recently talked with a data scientist who preferred the Udacity one.
  3. Crazy that there's been zero net movement in the NL Central standings over the previous ten games. Cubs, Brewers, Cardinals all went 6-4.
  4. This feels like one of the greatest regular season wins in Brewers history. I'm sure it isn't, but it feels like it right now.
  5. There's still a huge shortage of people who can skillfully work with data (e.g. data analysis, data scientists, data engineers). So if you are looking for a career move that's where I would look to pick up skills that could be combined with your expertise in finance. As for coding in particular, my main bit of advice would be that learning to code is fairly straightforward but learning to write good code is hard. Best to develop good habits when starting out.
  6. The last guy to make Counsell this mad got traded to the Orioles...
  7. The most discussed play in BF.net history was allowing Peralta to face Carpenter in the 3rd I should have known that a bullpen game would just mean 9 full innings of pitching moves to over-scrutinize...
  8. Just got home and saw it's 4-4 and raining. Wow, lots of pages to this thread. Did I miss anything? Glad they are saving some game for the west coast fans
  9. They did try and run a screen to Taylor but he got tripped at the line and Hornibrook ended up with an intentional grounding penalty. The Iowa game was very impressive overall. It was the first game I watched this year but they looked like a poised, well-disciplined team. Agreed that they played 'boring'...some of that could be the opponent though...out-grinding Iowa is the way to beat them. The blitz seemed to work when it was used, I'm surprised they didn't do it more. Bad things--the secondary is terrible and will get lit up by the better teams in the east. The only way to compete in those games will be to win with time of possession and running the ball.
  10. This game is a really good test run for the wildcard game/playoffs. I'm glad we're doing it now, especially in a game that we didn't have very good odds of winning anyway.
  11. Completely agree. If the season ended today, Yelich has this thing won. I don't even think it would be that close. He's doing all the things that voters like: League leader in traditional offensive stats--check [not just ahead of Baez, league leader is key] League leader in advanced offensive stats--check Hot streak during pennant race--check On playoff team--check [even better that the team exceeded preseason expectations] Big splashy moments that grab headlines--check and check Baez is the one needing nontraditional things that are hard to quantify like defense, flexibility, and energy. I don't see the big market or division vs. wildcard thing mattering much.
  12. Pittsburgh is a good team. They are going to finish above .500 in a tough division.
  13. This Cubs game is a nice start to the weekend.
  14. This has been brought up before but nobody wants April home games because of poor attendance (more April home games = less July home games). Teams like the Brewers have been insistent on getting a fair split of home/road games in April. MLB could do other things like having more off days following April series in cold weather cities in case there is a weather cancellation.
  15. Playoff odds are at a season-high again, 99.3% https://www.fangraphs.com/standings/playoff-odds-graphs The recent plot for the Cardinals is crazy...they have been right on the cusp where a +/- 15% swing can happen every day.
  16. Thanks for the additional details pitchleague. I don't want to comment further because the issue upsets me but I just want to thank the teachers in this thread for the incredibly difficult job they do for these reasons and others.
  17. That's incredibly pathetic, makes my blood boil. Why does the poor, innocent girl have to be the victim? The parents should be the ones facing charges/penalties.
  18. The Cubs have really responded well to the pressure from the Brewers and the scheduling. Not good for us but I admit to being somewhat impressed.
  19. It essentially eliminates them from the playoff but they will still likely find their way to the B10 title game.
