  1. I like having the shot at Nova in the second round, assuming they get by Buzz. If they are going to go out in the first weekend, maybe they will give us an entertaining game against a #1.
  2. I'm ok with the rosters because the purpose of the WBC is to grow the game. Plus it makes the tournament more fun to have some balanced competition.
  3. I would like to see more mid-majors in the tournament--both the conference champ winner and the regular season winner from every conference. Or at least make major conference teams have a winning record in conference play to get in. Or even just add more play-in games so we can weed out the crappy teams before the field of 64 is set.
  4. Marquette has the look of a team that is going to pull off a 12 vs. 5 seed upset in the first round of the tourney.
  5. It doesn't get said much but Wisconsin is a great basketball state. Interest in college basketball is much higher than most places. Lots of quality talent generated from the high school level. Hockey, in contrast, has never really caught on in Wisconsin. Maybe not having an NHL team is a part of that, but there simply are way less kids playing hockey in Wisconsin compared with neighboring states. Only 18,000 kids in youth hockey in WI compared with 50,000 in Michigan and 57,000 in Minnesota. Even Illinois has more. Obviously there are many dedicated hockey fans in the state, but an NHL team would have major work to do in order to increase hockey interest from casual sports fans.
  6. Looks like the Blue Jays' window has closed...two ugly ALCS appearances and zero pennants. The biggest positive out of this might end up being the revival of the Montreal Expos 5-10 years down the road. The massive TV ratings for those Jays playoff games showed that Canada has major growth potential for MLB.
  7. The problem with Schilling is that he was a borderline candidate to begin with. If he kept his mouth shut he probably would have gotten the benefit of the doubt (like what's happening with Bonds and Clemens), but he gets a "no" from me because the thought of what he might say in his induction speech is truly disturbing.
  8. Anyone else following the BBWAA HOF voting? Lots of interesting story lines again this year. @NotMrTibbs has logged 20% of the ballots so far. Bagwell, Raines, and Pudge look comfortably in. Hoffman is sitting right at 75% and Vlad Guerrero is at 72%. Edgar Martinez looks to be making a significant jump this year--67% currently. Bonds and Clemens have jumped to 71% while Schilling has dropped to 51%. Will be fun to see how this all plays out.
  9. Back in ~2007 I totaled a 1991 Honda Accord in Madison on black ice at the spot where Mineral Pt Rd bends into Speedway. Wasn't even going that fast, the car just went straight into the guard rail. That was definitely one of the events that precipitated me leaving for a warmer place.
  10. It's wonderful to be in Seattle when the Seahawks lose, although the MLS cup win is softening the blow a bit. Fivethirtyeight gives the Packers a 30% chance at the playoffs, 21% at the division. So beating the Lions is definitely the most likely path. I'm happy with 1/3 playoff odds given the situation a few weeks ago.
  11. It does look like the parade of snow and arctic blasts is going to continue for at least a week. I've been paying more attention because I'm visiting for the holidays--first time in Wisconsin during winter in about 5 or 6 years (I've made a habit of only returning in summer). The Friday storm looks like it will have a pretty nice warm front, the model average looks like 6-10" for Milwaukee, 4-8" for central WI but of course those numbers will have to be adjusted as the week progresses. Too soon to say anything about the Christmas forecast but there doesn't appear to be an extended thaw on the horizon.
  12. If you're going to play by the current rules (eye test trumps all), I would have put Michigan in the playoff ahead of Penn State. Penn State lost to Michigan by 39. I'm fine with Washington being in. One-loss conference champion is more important than nonconference strength of schedule. Plus they won the last two "must win" games against top-25 teams, including a very impressive performance against a great Colorado defense. We finally (mostly) got rid of the SEC bias and there's no need to replace it with a Big Ten bias. We'll see what happens in the Rose Bowl and in the CFP. I expect USC to win and Washington to have a good showing against Alabama. Chris Petersen knows how to win big games and Washington is more talented than people give them credit for. WIsconsin has a nice chance to pick up a win in a major bowl game. Not what we hoped for but would be nice to keep the bowl winning streak going.
  13. It wasn't an issue to get tickets to the last one in Miami, although a few of the games (with the DR playing) did have near-sellout crowds. Prices were very reasonable. You'll probably be able to purchase single-game tickets from MLB when it gets closer.
  14. Yep, agreed that it looks stupid now but most people wanted the change when it happened. Interleague play and the dissolution of the league presidents were still relatively new events and some people were miffed about Cal Ripken Jr's home run in 2001. Now most people accept that the ASG is an exhibition game so it's fitting to retire the rule.
  15. The two worst times to drive IMO are Sunday mornings and commute times. Sunday mornings because the church crowd has absolutely no idea how to drive. Commute times because everyone is either in a rush or on their cell phones.
  16. That was a fun Badgers game. I didn't see much to complain about. By the 4th quarter they had complete control against a solid 8-win Minnesota team. The PSU game will be fun, winner to the Rose Bowl (unless Washington or Clemson somehow falters).
  17. Thanks for that info. I stand corrected. That's a 10% increase in pitches, enough to add 20 minutes to a 3-hr game. I still fall on the side of preferring to speed the game up, since the pace is ultimately what bothers me. Good ABs (that last 8-10+ pitchers) are entertaining. The crowd usually responds well to them.
  18. You're solving a problem that doesn't exist. There is no increase in OBP (there was in the 90s but we are now back at 1970s-1980s values). MLB 1974: BB%: 8.7% OBP: .324 2016: BB%: 8.2% OBP: .322
  19. It was bound to happen eventually and it happened in the best way possible. The Cubs are a very likable team this year. MLB picked up thousands of new fans in the last week. There were several people in my circle of friends who are not baseball fans that watched last night and were excited to recap the game. You couldn't script a better outcome. Like others said, it also makes it much easier to hate the Cubs going forward. They can't be the "lovable losers" anymore.
  20. THE CLEVELAND INDIANS BLEW A 3-1 LEAD IN THE WORLD SERIES.
  21. There are plenty of dumb reviews, but instant replay saved us from a major controversy there.
  22. The Cubs have played well under pressure and this is the ultimate pressure game. I agree that the Cubs will get ahead, but the Indians will fight back. Would love to see Chapman pitching with the winning runs on base. That would be as good as 2001 or maybe even better.
  23. DVRs keep guys like Manfred awake at night. Goodbye to TV revenues if that becomes more widespread. The pace of play problem would be solved ASAP.
  24. I think you (and others here) are making conclusions based on false assumptions. Extra pitching changes are not the main problem. We've gone from 2.6 to 3.9 pitchers per team per game (from the 1970s to 2014). So we're only seeing an average of 2-3 additional pitching changes per game. A pitching change is required to take 2:30 but it's probably closer to 3:00 when counting the mound visit. However, not all of the additional pitching changes occur in the middle of an inning. So the pitching changes are probably adding 5-7 minutes to the game time on average, maybe 10 minutes at absolute worst. It's a pause of a known duration that allows fans to take a break or divert their attention elsewhere. The average time of game has increased by ~25 minutes over that time span. So there is another 15-20 minutes in there of messing around that isn't related to pitching changes. This is time when I'm supposed to be paying attention to the game, but it is literally an extra 15-20 minutes of players doing absolutely nothing. The MLB rulebook (8.04) already specifies a limit of 12 seconds once the pitcher has the ball. We wouldn't even have to change the rules to speed up the time of game, just enforce the one already on the books!
  25. I mean......I agree, but this changes nothing. Nobody *cares* really. I mean they care, but this won't change how more than potentially a handful of people change their substance use habits. It didn't happen to their family, so it literally does not matter in the greater scheme of things. For most people, there's a disconnect. You have to see this hit home before it makes any sense. But that's why I think this tragedy has a disproportionate opportunity to change the culture. http://www.miamiherald.com/sports/spt-columns-blogs/dan-le-batard/article104096841.html
