  1. I like the hill more than the 250 ft porch in LF, the Brewers have lost far too many games from cheap popups in Houston. The flagpole only cost Richie Sexson a bomb once and the hill is so far away that it almost never comes into play.
  2. That's the first time that Prince hasn't overwhelmingly won a collision, but it looks like Wallace still got the worst of it.
  3. Prince's HR measured at 486 feet (officially), longest in MLB since Adam Dunn's 504 foot shot in 2008. If that HR would have been at Miller Park, it would have gone over the RF bleachers and out the window.
  4. The evidence continues to mount that Sveum is an excellent hitting coach.
  5. I've been in South Florida for 8 months now. We only went to the Keys for one day. The drive is very pretty but there isn't that much to do out there (at least for young people on a budget). Snorkeling is very popular in Key Largo, they have tour groups that go out to the Coral Reef. Key West is more for the older, drinking crowd but there are some decent restaurants/cafes. The Hemmingway/Truman house are popular tourist destinations and the beach on the end of Key West is decent (clean but not much sand or surf). Fishing is very popular, many places offer guided deep sea fishing tours as well. You could also check out the southern part of Everglades National Park. The entrance is in Homestead and the road goes all the way down to the bottom of the FL mainland. I have never actually been to that part but I have heard good reviews. I am planning on taking some visitors canoeing down there in a few weeks. The canoeing elsewhere in South Florida (Ten Thousand Islands, Peace River) has been very enjoyable. If you are flying into Ft. Lauderdale, I recommend paying the tolls and taking 595 to the Turnpike instead of taking 95 into downtown Miami. That will keep you away from most of the traffic (unless you are planning on stopping in Miami).
  6. They are actually still behind last year's pace by about 15,000, but the Reds series really closed the gap with 3 nice crowds this week. Ultimately, the chase for 3,000,000 depends on whether or not they are still in competition in August/September. I think we all expect them to be, but you never know what will happen. It is great that Milwaukee fans support their baseball team and it has a positive feedback in terms of good reviews from players, national media, the free agent/resigning market, etc.
  7. If we take away all of Gomez' outs on the basepaths, he would still be hitting somewhere near the Mendoza line. It's especially pathetic when he's staring off into space and gets picked off. Weeks follows it up with a triple, should be 3-2.
  8. I think the home crowd should boo more when the opposing pitcher throws to first. It seems like they stop throwing over when the crowd starts to get impatient. The fans do not have much influence in baseball but it is a chance for them to try and rush the pitcher into throwing some pitches when he is trying to delay things or slow the game down.
  9. Braun just needs to keep hitting HRs, that will keep Fielder's RBI total down.
  10. We've reached the part of the game where everyone tries to hit a 7-run homer.
  11. It makes the most sense for Prince to go to the AL, but it would be fun to see Prince in a Cubs uniform. It would add another great chapter to the Cubs/Brewers rivalry which has kind of grown sour lately. If the Cubs do sign Prince, they will probably have a window of 2012-2013 and maybe 2014 where he will put up huge numbers and give them a chance at the World Series. Yes, it will be a "bad" contract by WAR/value calculations, but a large market team like the Cubs can get away with a few of those contracts--in fact, they should be overpaying for free agents since they have the money and need to keep them away from other big market teams. The NL Central will be even more fun if both the Cardinals and Cubs are entertaining offers to Pujols and Fielder at the same time. Better to keep them in the division, if Brewers fans are going to keep turning out at 3,000,000 per year, fans will show up to see the Brewers' pitchers face these star rivals, not the AAA Pittsburgh Pirates. And of course Prince will get booed--Ryan Braun is the hero and Fielder is the villain, that's just how it works.
  12. 2010 vs 2011 Attendance Overall attendance is down 420 fans/game (as of Saturday's games). It could be much worse, but Texas is making up a big part of the decline by averaging over 10,000 fans/game more than last year. Some of the numbers are skewed, such as Toronto's big increase (due to an early-season Yankees series). The league-wide numbers are actually very healthy. It is good to see the fans showing up in some mid-markets like Texas, Colorado, and San Diego. Many of the teams with declines are still in overall good shape, such as Milwaukee, Chicago (Cubs), Atlanta, and Houston. It remains to be seen what will happen to the Mets and Dodgers. There could be significant declines in both cities later this year and especially in 2012 if the ownership issues are not resolved. I think the Minnesota Twins could also be in for a huge decline next year. The Marlins will see at least a 10,000/game increase in 2012 judging by other cities that have opened new ballparks. Cleveland has been in the news for some surprisingly low early numbers, but they have a decent prognosis because the Cavaliers will see a huge drop next year and the team does not appear to be as bad as advertised.
  13. Another poorly attended game, at least compared with comparable games over last 3 years. Yeah, it's Easter Sunday, but I wonder what they are going to do with the extra 10,000 Axford bobbleheads? They are about 40,000 behind last year's pace. I am not sure what kind of crowds they are expecting for the Reds series, but anything over 27,000/game will cut into that deficit. I think they will jump ahead of last year during the Cubs-Astros-Cardinals homestand at the end of July if they are still in competition.
  14. Just ridiculous. He is still upset about Gomez' steal?
  15. Their spring training home can be "Busch Light"
  16. Wow, what a harsh group here tonight. Billy was my favorite player when he was here, he always gave 100% effort and made the most of his talent. I would have much preferred Hall to Betancourt this year.
  17. I'm a little biased because I was born in St. Louis (left at age 5), but... St. Louis has many great fans. It's one of the true baseball towns in America, although Milwaukee is just as great of a baseball town before Packers season starts. I went to old Busch a few times. Everyone was very respectful. Lots of people scoring the games. They stay for the whole game more than other fan bases. Our overall experience with St. Louis is that the (suburban) people are very friendly, sort of a Midwestern/Southern mix. I think there are a few factors that have caused the animosity (which is often well-warranted): 1) The Internet, which allowed the less-classy Cardinals fans to have their voice heard 2) ESPN, which shoves the "best fans in baseball" cliche down everyone's throat 3) The LaRussa era, especially the uniform police 4) The unnecessary self-promotion of the "best fans" garbage over the past several years I personally think they are one of the better fan bases, but I think the Brewers, Twins, Giants, and Red Sox fans all can make a good case for being the best as well.
  18. This is a great day for the Brewers franchise and I look forward to Ryan playing his entire career in a Milwaukee Brewers uniform. He is the Robin Yount of the younger generation of Brewers fans.
  19. There's no way Mark A. sells the Brewers. 0% chance. Zilch. MLB franchises are not like company stock that gets traded. The Attanasio family has fully invested themselves into not just the Brewers, but into the state of Wisconsin. They literally just finished a new house in Wisconsin. They have invested heavily in the ballpark for the long run. They have developed connections through greatly expanding Brewers charities. This isn't superficial stuff, it is a legitimate commitment to the Brewers and it seems crazy to just sell it off for a profit after all that work. The Brewers are not an investment, they are a huge part of Mark's life. Will there be some pressure (or at least talk) from Mark A's group about buying the Dodgers? Of course. But would they even want them? They have an outdated stadium--some repairs have been done but it has none of the smaller touches that have been slowly added to Miller Park since Mark took over. They have some serious issues with security in the parking lot which will scare some people away from going to games. They have a fan base notorious for coming in the 3rd inning and leaving in the 7th. Sure they have decent revenue numbers because of TV and merchandising and so on, but they have none of the small things that make the Brewers so special. Plus, despite the debt problems the Dodgers are still worth way more that the Brewers. So he's going to need to come up with a few hundred million somewhere unless Bud gives him an easy deal. I do not think the Loria case applies. Evidence suggests that Loria prefers profit over wins, which clearly does not apply to the Attanasios.
  20. Tough loss, but a solid 4-4 road trip. Will definitely take the series win in Philly.
  21. I think we all understand that Gomez and Betancourt are below-average players. But it is best to keep criticism at a reasonable level. If they do something blatantly awful, it's fair to criticize them, but per the fan forum etiquette, we would like to avoid "impulsive posts expressing knee-jerk frustration in the form of vents, rants and complaints." Just remember, if the Brewers are going to make the playoffs this year, they are going to need contributions from guys like Betancourt and Gomez. They probably are going to be on the team the whole year barring some unforeseen trade. Nobody's opinion on them is going to change because of one play or one game. And we're tied for 1st place :-)
  22. The Phillies' offense has been quiet lately but they had been finding a way to pull out some low scoring wins...until the Brewers showed up. It is nice to see the Brewers exploiting the flaws of an otherwise talented team. If only we could have pulled off two wins like this here in October 2008...
  23. I'm not sure if the Bucks will ever totally recover from the biased officiating in the 2001 Conference Finals. Sacramento never recovered from that Lakers series and the Bucks are likely to share the same fate eventually. However, there are still a few other NBA teams in worse shape. The Hornets have been in financial trouble despite having a winning team. Cleveland is probably going to set a record for attendance decrease next year--they could possibly go from #3 to #30.
  24. These spring snowstorms are a nightmare to predict. I wouldn't take the forecast accumulations very seriously. The highest totals tend to be more localized in these spring storms, with everyone else getting a sloppy 1-3". The thunderstorms in Illinois could steal the moisture also. But the storm is definitely coming and it's going to be mostly in the form of snow for the NW 2/3 of the state.
  25. Models are also showing a second storm over the weekend. It looks a little warmer but the far Northwoods could get even more snow from that storm with a rain/snow mix over the areas that get dumped from the first storm. Edit: I should also note that the Madison area looks to be on the hook for 2-4" from the first storm, as the models have pushed the track a little farther south now. Kind of late in the year for that much snow, but as long as it falls at night it should stick.
