  1. Preller doesn't really know what he's doing, so can we come up with a package that has good optics but is actually garbage? Do we have top-100 prospects that we think are overrated? And throw in some fillers so he can get the headline of having traded Soto for like 8 players. Realistically I think we might be on the 'trade for Soto' bus one year from today when the price will be better.
  2. I just wonder what problem we're trying to solve here. We have left field solved right now for the next 5 years with Yelich around. If Yelich was a FA right now he would sign for at least 5/135 if not more. And we don't have a replacement in the pipeline if we got rid of him.
  3. At least here in Seattle they already switched all of the garbage trucks over to natural gas.
  4. We haven't figured out how to mass produce hydrogen with green energy. The pressing need to reduce CO2 emissions in the next 1-2 decades means that we have to do it first by scaling mature technologies and making incremental improvements from there. In the short term we don't have the time to hope that emerging technologies can take over. As we move into the 2040s/2050s some of these other less advanced technologies may take over. So in the short term it's going to be the age of the Lithium-Ion battery -- not just for cars either but also for mass storage of wind and solar power. Texas is already doing this and is scaling it quickly. It is also being done on the scale of individual homes. Solar in particular has gotten incredibly cheap and the batteries solve the main problem with generation depending on the sun and weather. Some interesting news yesterday with major automakers investing $1 billion in an EV charging network. I have a feeling we're going to start to see superchargers popping up everywhere in the next few years -- especially at restaurants/retailers along major highways.
  5. And they did it with all Carlos Santana-like pickups. Who all happened to greatly outperform their career averages.
  6. You're going to be pleasantly surprised. His numbers are what they are, but he's a guy that you want to have up at the plate in a crucial situation. And he's the kind of vet that is like adding another hitting coach to the roster. I can almost guarantee that one of the young guys on the roster is going to have a hot September that he will attribute to some change that Carlos suggested. Go read some articles about the impact that he had on the 2022 Mariners, he was acquired on June 27, 2022 and there were already articles raving about how he turned around their season by late July of last year.
  7. I don't think of Carlos as a plus defender, but he is certainly an upgrade over Tellez. Slightly above average would be my impression. Also of note is that historically he has hit better from the right side, but this year his splits have been event perhaps slightly better hitting from the left side. And most of his power has been from the left side this year.
  8. Aaaaahhhh!!! What a smart pickup!! Santana was the unsung hero during the Mariners playoff run last season -- both because of his leadership and his clutch hitting. Love it.
  9. 100%. The Angels are possibly the most incompetent organization in baseball. I'm guessing their dollar spent per win ratio is the worst in MLB over the past decade and the incompetence goes back even farther than that. 2023 -- 7th in payroll -- not in playoff position as of July 2022 -- 9th in payroll -- missed playoffs 2021 -- 4th in payroll -- missed playoffs 2020 -- 11th in payroll -- missed playoffs 2019 -- 9th in payroll -- missed playoffs 2018 -- 6th in payroll -- missed playoffs 2017 -- 11th in payroll -- missed playoffs 2016 -- 7th in payroll -- missed playoffs 2015 -- 7th in payroll -- missed playoffs 2014 -- 6th in payroll -- swept 3-0 in ALDS 2013 -- 7th in payroll -- missed playoffs Edit -- and they haven't had a winning season since 2015! Every other organization that is known to be incompetent (and spend above the bottom 10 in payroll) has managed to get lucky at least once in that time period and make a deep playoff run. That said...I tip my hat to them for making a buy move this year. It was the right thing to do given they are headed for the cellar of the AL West after this year. I still project them to finish 4th in the AL West this year.
  10. Poor Teoscar is going to be victim #1 of the recent trend of every right hander learning to throw a sweeper. He can't lay off that pitch even when it ends up 3 feet off the outside corner. He's leading MLB in strikeouts with 136.
  11. I doubt he has any value in the trade market, especially with the NTC, so this would be a pure salary dump. Keep him.
  12. Looks like Fleck is the latest B10 coach to be under the microscope for inappropriate locker room behavior.
  13. No, they are either on or off the market. If the Brewers made a "can't refuse" offer for Soto that convinced the Padres to make a trade, the first thing the Padres would do is call up other potential trade parters and say "the Brewers offered X, are you going to counter?". At which point the little birdies would pick it up and there would be a story on ESPN that evening about how Soto is now "on the market" and suddenly 10 other GMs would call the Padres with their own offers. At the end of the day it comes down to having the right set of trade chips that fit the needs of the trade partner and are better chips than what your competition is asking. Or maybe you get lucky and you find out the Oakland A's really like Esteury Ruiz for some unknown reason. I'll just also philosophically say that I don't want to sacrifice the future for 2023. We have no hope of getting a first round bye so we're going to have to play a tough wild card series and one more bat isn't going to be the difference maker in that scenario.
  14. Baseball savant tells me that about half of Tim Anderson’s struggles are due to him hitting literally everything on the ground (he has 0 HR this year) and the other half is plain old bad luck. His xWOBA is 40 points above his actual wOBA and 40 points below where it has been in the last 3-4 seasons. It also lists 2018 Jonathan Schoop as a similar batter and we all know how that went. Hard pass.
  15. We're over 30 expected plaintiffs now!
  16. And we still won the trade
  17. Pros -- when he's on he hits to all fields. Puts the ball in play. Solid but not splashy defense. Seems like a nice guy, good clubhouse fit. Cons -- doesn't take walks, possibly the slowest runner in MLB. Has been a bit streaky since his injury last year. He can't play 2B, that was an emergency. He's done a bit more 3B but I would never slot him as a regular there. I doubt he's available. If the Brewers want to trade with Seattle, Teoscar Hernandez is probably available but otherwise they are likely going to bring back their core for a 2024 run. They are expected to be aggressive in free agency this winter.
  18. What’s your threshold for number of different sports and number of lawsuits before this is no longer “relatively minor”. Seems like the floodgates are in the process of opening. Criminal charges appear possible as well for failure to report hazing of minors.
  19. I'm guessing this happened as a result of giving everyone the day off on the Thursday after the all-star game. Last night almost everyone was on their #4 or #5 starter (or, realistically #6 or #7 because of injuries). And it's summer so there is more offense in general than the beginning of the season which is the only other time this alignment might happen.
  20. Hard pass on Cron, he can’t hit outside of Coors Field. I do have interest in Charlie Blackmon. Moustakas is also having a bit of a resurgence with Colorado but that feels more like a mirage. Blackmon is old but is still a good hitter and should be back from his hand injury soon. He’s what we thought Winker could be.
  21. I'm entirely serious when I say he could win MVP in both leagues in that scenario.
  22. I wonder if Ohtani's pursuit of 62 HR is going to be what keeps him in an Angels uniform through the end of the year. The Angels would have to be crazy to trade someone in the middle of the greatest season in baseball history. Who cares about the playoffs?
  23. Turang needs to hit better for sure...although, the Astros rode a similar OPS+ from Martin Maldonado through two championships. The shift ban has made 2B an incredibly valuable defensive position and that is certainly factoring into the Brewers' decision making. As KeithStone said, you have to make up the production somewhere, and the Brewers are failing to do that at 1B and DH. At least they are getting production from Catcher this year.
  24. This this this this this. Weimer and Turang do not need to be good hitters. Anything above an OPS+ of 80 or 90 is gravy. We are winning games because we have elite defense at two of the most important defensive positions. If we need more offense, then we should find it at 1B, DH, 3B, etc.
  25. Add it up! 4.0 oWAR, 2.5 pitching WAR, and -0.8 dWAR this year (not sure if I trust that last number). The other thing about Ohtani is that he's one guy taking up two roster spots. So in theory he also lets you have an extra guy on your team. But that's also the real risk -- if he gets injured then you're down your best hitter and best pitcher. If we ever want to see Ohtani in a Brewers uniform, this would be the time to do it. The turning point of this franchise was trading for CC Sabathia. We probably shouldn't do it, but it sure would make for a fun few months :)
