  1. You can't have tough schedules and make it an unofficial rule that 2 losses eliminates you from the playoff. The change to rewarding conference championships will be interesting. Clemson and Utah would have gotten first-round byes if we were doing the 12-team format this year. That's a massive, massive reward for winning the conference championship game, but it certainly would have made those games really interesting -- as well as the final rankings of the top 4 conference champions (who get the byes). So the decision to put K-State behind Clemson and Utah would be huge.
  2. Just checked the score, I was like "Wow, Brazil won 4-0, impressive." Then I saw it's halftime ?
  3. The Mets are just setting themselves up for another postseason choke. It's a pretty safe bet that if these guys stay healthy they will win the Mets a ton of regular season games. They are due to finally win the NL East. But I've yet to see one of these big market teams ride their old dudes to a championship, at least not that I can remember. Even the Mets have a limited budget and you need pitching depth to go deep in the postseason that could have been purchased with $40+ million per year. Sometimes you need to win an 18-inning game like the Astros did.
  4. They didn't play the same schedule. Alabama lost two very difficult road games. Georgia did not play any road games that were nearly as challenging as those. Alabama's two losses were amazing college football. We want more of that. But from Alabama's perspective they should try to avoid playing difficult road games as much as possible because it cost them the playoff and a ton of $$. If the playoff wasn't on the line, would the celebrations have been different for beating 'Bama? Would it have meant less to Tennessee or LSU? I doubt it, especially because both of them would have had a better shot at the playoffs themselves, rather than being left on the outside yet again this year because they aren't quite as talented as Alabama.
  5. The playoff is the rare alignment of the fans wanting something that will also make more money. CFB will eventually be a full paid professional league for 18-22 year olds with a set of super conferences that will have guaranteed slots in the playoff. To me the outstanding question is whether the financial evolution of the sport will lead to more parity. It was a pretty rough go for a while there but the SEC dominance isn’t quite what is was anymore and there is more financial incentive for players to go to a school like USC now than there previously was given the paycheck that they are getting to play there. I also think the playoff will lead to more parity because recruits will have more options for schools that can reasonable expect to make the playoff in any given year. They don’t play enough games for us to really know who the top-4 are. The schedules are insanely unbalanced, especially when you consider conference strengths and the difficulty of winning road games in a hostile environment. As long as they keep the first round of the playoff at campus stadiums, that will make it unique and interesting enough. If the Citrus Bowl or something becomes a first round hosting site and the stadium is half-full, then forget it.
  6. The USMNT is the baseball equivalent of team Canada in the WBC. Two or three all-stars in the lineup (Vlad, Freddie Freeman) with a bunch of fillers. Eventually they might get lucky and make the semifinals, but that’s the ceiling. Think of what it would take for Canada to develop a team worthy of competing with the US or DR or Japan on a regular basis. This isn’t a matter of coaching or strategy we’re talking about here. The Dutch would have had an answer for whatever combination of players and tactics we threw at them. This is about where soccer is as a priority in the US and how the pipeline works here (NCAA scholarships being the primary objective). We didn’t develop Pulisic. Perhaps people will take action when our women’s national team meets the same fate as the men — as is already beginning to happen. BTW I’m just paraphrasing what had written by people who know better than I do.
  7. The US are what they are, but the Netherlands are clearly superior to England. Those counter-attacks were beautiful. A team made up of a few decent players and a bunch of mediocre MLSers will never compete at that level. We need to send as much of our national team as possible to play in Europe, which will never happen because propping up the minor league MLS is more important than winning these games.
  8. The M's fanbase is kind of weird right now, all they really care about is how their moves compare to whatever the Astros are doing and they have been triggered by some recent comments from Dipoto that they not planning to make any big FA signings this offseason. Winker had a frustrating year. He was playing through injuries in a pitching-friendly ballpark. He didn't mesh with the M's clubhouse for whatever reason. He's a prime candidate for a bounce back year. I think the Brewers could have easily traded Wong for Winker straight up but getting Toro as well adds another potential piece of upside with a few years of control. There's no downside to seeing if Toro can find his footing at the MLB level. That's a pretty nice return for a guy who we had no plans to keep.
  9. As a Brewers/Mariners fan, here's my take (some of this was in the rumors thread as well): Winker -- a complete disaster in 2022 other than his high OBP. One of the worst defensive outfielders and baserunners that I have ever seen at the MLB level. Played himself out of the lineup and was left off the playoff roster. Received criticism for his lack of work ethic. I'm sure the Brewers will give him an occasional start in the OF but he's better off as a DH. I suspect the change of scenery will be a good thing and he will benefit from the shift ban and the shorter right-center field wall at AmFam. Toro -- this is a smart pickup by the Brewers. He's been behind Dylan Moore in Seattle but was solid at both 3B and 2B. Has some pop in his bat especially from the left side. Statistically he has been quite unlucky and the pitcher-friendly T-Mobile Park didn't help either. I think his xBA was quite a bit higher than his average. Honestly this is a pretty good return for the Brewers -- both of these guys have a ton of upside and could make meaningful contributions in 2022. We needed some depth at the MLB level and we got it.
  10. It was one thing forge our own path and to do things "the Wisconsin way" when we were winning NY6 bowl games. College football is not the same sport that it was 10, or even 5 years ago. The stakes are higher than ever with Michigan being elite again and USC coming into the conference. Plus the playoff is expanding. It's the worst possible time for a Big Ten program to be headed in the wrong direction. There's no time for "wait and see" on Leonhard. Even a year or two is an eternity. Mertz has little to do with any of this. We've sucked ever since Jonathan Taylor left. There was a time not that long ago when we could win games without needing to throw a single pass. All the QB had to do was hit wide open TEs on the play action. One look at this team showed that they don't have the talent to do anything more than the boring offense is run by every team in the bottom half of the Big Ten. Fickell isn't Lincoln Riley but he's saying all the right things. He has admired the program. He wants to build on the base that is already here. He will do that immediately by bringing in more recruits. This is nothing like Gary Anderson. Fickell knows the Big Ten. I couldn't be more excited about what a perfect match this is. I'm more optimistic about the future than I have been for a long, long time.
  11. I don’t really care where Fickell goes in 5 years. Wisconsin was in danger of falling back into the pack of perennial mediocrity that describes most of the B10 West. They are now immediately relevant on the national stage and should pick up enough transfers to be relevant next year. They should be winning the B10 West every year starting next year.
  12. Oh no, how will they ever survive without all of the talent on this roster???
  13. Gallardo was basically a light version of Felix Hernandez. They were born two months apart in 1986. Both of them threw a ton of innings in their early 20s and both blew their arms out by age 30. At least Gallardo got to pitch in the postseason a few times. He was huge for us in the NLDS in 2011. My last memory of Yo was watching him pitch for the Mariners in 2017. He was a shell of his former self by then and it was hard to watch. He had some rough, rough outings that year.
  14. Why are there divisions in college football? Shouldn't the conference championship be the #1 vs #2 team? Or is the purpose to give the playoff team an easy game?
  15. I’ll take another one point loss to Kansas in late March
  16. We missed our chance to get Geno when the Reds were giving him away for free. Seattle isn't going to part with him.
  17. I don't think I could be an MLB fan in this era if the Brewers were my only team. It's just too frustrating to see what the Brewers have to do to field a competitive team every year. Bad baseball teams are brutal to watch. Even the mediocre Brewers of 2022 were tough to watch. Obviously all teams go through down periods but seeing the Brewers tread water in mediocrity right now is especially frustrating when the NLCS was Philadelphia vs. San Diego -- two teams that we could have easily finished above in the standings if we had a league-average payroll. Now we're dumping assets that could help us in 2023 to save money. I agree with the strategy given the constraints, but 2/3 of MLB teams would probably hang onto the assets until mid-season to ease the transition with the rookies. That could very likely end up costing us a playoff spot if we dig too big of a hole to climb out of. As for big markets winning the World Series...Astros fans sure looked like they were having fun celebrating and I'm sure it was more than satisfying to shove it in the face of the other 29 fanbases that call them cheaters. And for all the flaws of baseball's economics, the current system does keep things fairly level at the top and the playoffs allow for enough upsets to keep the mid-market fans happy. So the Goliaths don't feel like Goliath. Yankees fans probably think they are just as tortured as Brewers fans.
  18. Renfroe’s 2022 season reminded me of 2016 Chris Carter. In fact, 2016 Carter had a higher OPS than 2022 Renfroe. I agree with shipping him out, I don’t think he’ll be missed. The rookies will have a higher ceiling and we will probably acquire some OF depth at some point.
  19. What an obtuse trade
  20. And they blow it on one stupid play. Ugh.
  21. As soon as I complained we have turned the tables. So close to a second goal a few times here.
  22. Looks like we're satisfied with one goal.
  23. Damn Pulisic is living up to the hype.
  24. Soccer is too subjective of a sport for me. Too easy for one of these refs to throw the match against us.
  25. FAs generally sign where they get the biggest payday. I still think Seattle is a good landing spot for Wong and I wouldn't be surprised if he ends up there. The question is whether Seattle wants the 'budget conscious' platoon solution or if they want to spend the big bucks for a splashier signing. And if they are willing to give up a prospect for Wong which I assume is what the Brewers want as opposed to what the Mariners have been shopping (OF and #5 starting pitchers).
