  1. Yeah that was a bad decision and a worse throw to end one of his best halfs of his career.
  2. No game thread? Regardless, Northwestern looks thoroughly outmatched right now. Unable to really pressure Mertz which probably is their only path to victory.
  3. Nobody deserves to win this game.
  4. But it would've been an easy 7 if not for Mertz underthrowing it. Probably. But I'm looking on the bright side. Going to mow the lawn and check in. This is looking like a dull affair.
  5. Ehh, probably better than a punt.
  6. Judging that first drive, I'm expecting a victory with frustrations from not cashing in in the red zone.
  7. Pittsburgh is showing all the signs of being a bad team. So, beating them at home isn't an accomplishment. But, the Packers took care of business and Pittsburgh never threatened in the second half. I'll take that any day.
  8. Devin Williams is not the first guy to learn that the wall always wins.
  9. I don't know if I would blame coaching for Mertz's poor ball security and slow decision making. They had an easy first down in the red zone early if he just throws the ball when he's supposed to. Honestly, I wouldn't be so hard on Mertz if he showed flashes of talent. But, he's been consistently bad.
  10. At this point, I'm really doubting our quarterback. I'd expect Fred Mertz to do better.
  11. A much more energetic type of insanity certainly.
  12. While I wouldn't call it necessarily "must see", the final 30 minutes or so of Malignant are as bat guano insane as anything I've seen in years, if not decades.
  13. Yeah, good for Shaw. That's a nice landing spot. Probably for another topic, but I'll say that absolutely embarrassing baseball doesn't do MLB any good. The Cubs did the right thing for their long term, it certainly does a disservice for their fanbase for the rest of the season. If you're going to charge major league prices, your product ought to at least resemble major league baseball even if it's bad major league baseball. The Cubs working the waiver wire would at least be a good faith effort with the fans.
  14. With the garbage the Cubs are trotting out, Chicago would seem a likely landing spot for the rest of the season. There's rebuilding and there's fielding unwatchable garbage. The Cubs are already getting pushback.
  15. I guess we're mostly through what there is of the summer movie season, cut down by the Delta variant. And a string of movies that weren't that compelling. The Green Knight I thought was really terrific. If you're in English lit mode rather than action adventure mode. It's certainly deliberately paced, but gorgeous, well acted, and has a lot on its mind. I was only vaguely aware of the poem, but it makes me want to read it. I thought The Suicide Squad was a lot of fun. Perhaps a little too much reliance on swearing and shocking kills, but likable characters, a weird big bad, and just enough social/political commentary to engage with. Black Widow I thought was good, but clearly a lesser version of Winter Soldier with the main character kind of sidelined in favor of the new characters coming up. This also feels a few years too late. I enjoyed it, but it's definitely mid-tier Marvel. Luca deserved a theatrical release. I really enjoyed In the Heights, but I'd agree with the criticism that it's too long. Summer of Soul and The Sparks Brothers were super musical documentaries. Highly recommended.
  16. WOAH SOLVDD!
  17. My second dose of Moderna basically made me achy and tired, but I was able to work through it. Not a bad trade off.
  18. I've seen all but Minari and The Father and will probably try to catch at least one of those two before the Oscars. Of the nominees I've seen, I liked Nomadland the best. And Mank the least. But I don't have too strong a feeling if someone pulls an upset on Nomadland. I think this is a fairly typical set of nominations for a year when there's not a blockbuster contender. And I think the year was always destined to be that way as I have doubts about West Side Story. And Dune is likely too esoteric. I don't think any of the comic book movies or Bond was an awards contender. I suppose In the Heights may be. But, I think this was always going to be a year that resembled the Independent Spirit Awards. What disappointed me most was how conservative the Academy was in a year when all the usual rules were out the window. Why not the last theatrical hit, The Invisible Man? Or a clever funny film like Palm Springs? Or one of the drive in hits like The Vast of Night? The Oscar industrial complex just kept grinding away with no regard to the world around it.
  19. Judging by the tv thread, there are a bunch of Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul fans on the site. I'd recommend that you check out Nobody when it hits your price point. Odenkirk is a surprisingly compelling action hero, and he elevates the material, which is at least partly about responding to emasculation. It's kind of the dark comedy version of A History of Violence with more than a dash of John Wick.
  20. As we've seen so far, there's a difference between having the vaccine and getting it in arms. So far, supply has been the limiting factor but I can easily see the limitations of the health care system stretch vaccinations out when the supply catches up. Still it certainly seems like big strides are being made.
  21. I think the argument for teachers, beyond potential exposure, is the effect it will have on learning and the economy. Nobody is very happy with distance learning and we don't want to set a whole generation behind. And it's definitely put a major burden on parents. Preventing deaths is obviously the number 1 priority, but taking steps to get the economy back to normal matters too.
  22. The Brewers might just be the favorites in the division by not holding a fire sale. Remember not too long ago when there was a worry that the Brewers just couldn't compete with the imminent Cubs and Cardinals dynasties?
  23. I love the power of just ending a streaming service with a few clicks. I die a little bit every time I've had to speak with cable "customer service". Never has it been so hard not to give someone money.
  24. I tend to think that the US has a structural problem with obesity. Agricultural subsidies and other pressures have made junk food cheap and plentiful. How cheap and plentiful is soda? The US has knocked down smoking to a large extent. We don't have the political will to knock down obesity.
  25. Yeah, I'm not too happy about B&N not providing the member discount either. But, given the pandemic, I'm willing to cut them some slack. I didn't go crazy this year. Added Parasite, The Elephant Man, and Eyes Without a Face so far. The Fellini box set is preordered. On a per film set, the Fellini box set is a bargain, 14 feature movies at less than $10 per film during the half off sale is quite the buy. Especially when there are several masterpieces in the set. I'm especially partial to La Strada and Nights of Cabiria.
