  1. I was privy to a preview screener of Amazon's THE VAST OF NIGHT recently. I think it's a very effective genre film with great attention to time period and a lot of style. If you like something like The Twilight Zone of old radio drama science fiction, or heck just like Orson Welles' War of the Worlds, I think you'll like this a lot.
  2. They probably sold out for the novelty aspect of going to the drive-in. At that price, no way the interest level stays past the first couple of weeks. You are right about that, if they expect that kind of revenue all summer it just isn't going to happen but it can work short term. Once Marcus and others realize there is money to be made that will drive down demand and probably price as well. Yeah, supply and demand still applies. There's certainly a lot of demand for anything to do. And not much supply. 150 carloads is a pretty small amount in the Milwaukee area and there are a lot of families. That will change though. And, as I said, those 9 pm and later showings on a weeknight are bound to be sparsely attended after the novelty wears off at the latest prices. I've no doubt that the Milkmen will make a killing the first weekend or two though.
  3. I'm hearing that the Majestic is looking to turn their lot into a drive in.
  4. Yeah, I think the pricing is pushing it. Especially if you're not getting a double feature. But, I expect that they'll adjust when that 9 pm show in the middle of the week is nearly empty.
  5. I think the Franklin drive in will be a success, and I think they have a good mix of upcoming movies, but $35 a car load only really works for families with kids.
  6. The CDC really should know better. I'm sure that comes from the top though.
  7. Yeah, I'm aware of both of those drive ins. Without new content, it's kind of unknown territory. I know the Chilton drive in is showing more recent fare like Onward and Call of the Wild. OTOH, the McHenry, IL drive in is going with a double feature of E.T. and Jaws. I think both approaches can be successful, especially with not much of anything as competition, but the latter approach of classics is much more appealing to me.
  8. I kind of wonder if this might bring back the drive in to an extent. Honestly, I don't know why, other than contractual stipulations, that Miller Park doesn't become a drive in when the Brewers are out of town.
  9. I'm becoming increasingly of the opinion that the only way to keep people at home is to pay them to stay at home. It may be a blip or simply because we're testing more people, but cases seem to be on the uptick over the last few days and the scenes in bars and restaurants looks like a lot of people seem to think that because the stay at home order has been rescinded that it's perfectly safe. It looked like people were moving around more the last week or two and that people's patience had run out. Maybe we've bought some time and a little more awareness, but there's certainly the potential for it to get very bad again. I should add that the bars are my biggest fear going forward. It's such a big part of Wisconsin's lifestyle and alcohol is almost certainly going to make a lot of people let down their guard. South Korea, who really seem to know what they're doing, had to re-shut the nightclubs. I don't think Wisconsin is prepared to do that.
  10. I'm hopeful, but probably going to be disappointed, that people will have gotten it out of their systems and realize that just running willy nilly into a packed bar isn't smart. Especially when we've a long ways to go. Needless to say, I'll let other people be the canary in the coal mine for a few weeks. I expect that I'm not going to like the results, but maybe there will be some sense.
  11. I'm not convinced the GOP has any consensus on what to do going forward. We'll see. Whatever the case, the current status quo can't hold.
  12. Well, I was wrong about the Supreme Court. I'm of the opinion that the legislature shouldn't be running to the courts but passing their own laws if they don't like the results, but we'll see what next actions are.
  13. At this point, I'm guessing the Supreme Court is going to punt. Especially as the gating criteria are close to being met. As they should. It's pretty brazen for the legislature to want to use the courts to overturn a law passed by the legislature. The legislature has the power to pass legislation and enact a new law if they don't like it.
  14. We're not there yet, but there's at least some good news in the data and revised orders. Especially for small retailers. Drive-ins being allowed to operate is pretty minor considering there are only 9 in the state, and only the ones in Jefferson and Chilton relatively close to Milwaukee, but hopefully it's a prelude to more.
  15. I'm looking forward to the new Dylan album. He's been a ray of light just dropping new things in the last month.
  16. Personally, I'd like to see the drive-ins get an exemption. I understand New York is considering it. It would at least be something to do with a change of scenery. Maybe you'd have to do some e-ticketing and shut down the concession stand, but it seems feasible.
  17. I busted out the Ingmar Bergman box set.
  18. Knocking some films off my bucket list given the stay at home order. Last week I knocked off the Soviet 7 hour War and Peace film series. The whole series is huge with thousands, perhaps tens of thousands, of extras. It has to be one of the largest productions ever mounted. What's more, it's really good too.
  19. I suppose it's worth noting that The Seventh Seal is a plague movie.
  20. Surprisingly, The Seventh Seal has a sense of humor. It's certainly not a joyless slog. Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey wasn't that big a leap.
  21. I'm 3 episodes into Watchmen and enjoying it a lot. It feels inspired by the original book in the best way.
  22. I tend to think that the family oriented nature of Disney+ might have them competing with over the air shows for eyes. Especially once the initial honeymoon period is over. It's a really good service for families. I don't know how essential it is for households without kids.
  23. What's been good so far: THE PASSION OF JOAN OF ARC is, of course, a masterpiece. GIVE ME LIBERTY is a fast paced, independent comedy - drama shot around Milwaukee. LONG DAY'S JOURNEY INTO NIGHT is one of the best looking movies of the year and has a gorgeous, hour long tracking shot as its climax. FIRST LOVE by Takashi Miike is a gonzo, midnight movie blast. I've heard great things about the killer dress movie IN FABRIC, for what it's worth. I have coverage at http://wherethelongtailends.com/
  24. This year's festival launches tomorrow and they have a pretty terrific lineup. I'm particularly excited for Parasite. I think it's a tremendous community event. Anyone else going?
  25. I'm not that worried about Disney+. They'll never have a show on it like Game of Thrones or any one of HBO's big hits for adults. Chernobyl was by all accounts a pretty sizable hit. Adults may not be going out to the movies, but they certainly still do watch shows geared for adults. And adults pay the bills Disney+ will likely have a big launch, but their selection announced to date is fairly limited, especially compared to what it could be, and we'll see how invested people actually are in the World of Star Wars as opposed to specific characters, around episode 5 of The Mandalorian.
