  1. I also want to mention that Gwynn's OBP will always be skewed to the low side. Sac bunts and, to a lesser extent for Gwynn, sac flies count against OBP. Gwynn was 2-3 yesterday but ONLY had a .400 OBP, which was the same as Weeks. I relate Gwynn somewhat to Krabbenhoft for the Badgers. If you just look at stats, you will be misled. There are little things that can be done to help the team, that don't show up in stats.
  2. To be fair, the entire Brewers lineup only hit 3 balls hard all day. Gwynn's speed gives him the ability to get on base, even when he doesn't hit it hard (i.e. his first hit yesterday).
  3. No kidding. Especially when you're talking about a career .245 hitter in Gross. Also, he's only had one season with over a .330 OBP. That make absolutely no sense at all.
  4. 1. Trade Redd and the 7th pick for the #2 or #3 pick, and draft Rose. 2. Try and trade Mo for whatever they can get. 3. Bring in a 2-guard that can play some defense.
  5. I have a feeling on most days, Weeks would have stolen 2nd, and Gwynn would be swinging away. However, with the wet infield, a stolen base wasn't feasible at the time. For the most part, I don't have a big problem with Gwynn batting 2nd against righties. Hardy should bat 2nd versus lefties, though.
  6. They were winning because "the others" decided to show up for a few games. Then they decided they were going to suck some more. Mo took 13.2 shots on average during that stretch and has averaged 14.2 this season. He averages 14.39 shots in losses and 14.5 shots in wins. Again if we get games where one or two of Yi, Simmons, Villanueva or Mason step up then we have a fighting chance. If they don't then teams are going to beat us because their talent is far superior. Mo must not shoot much in tie games. Otherwise, these numbers are a bit off.
  7. So Adam Everett is as valuable as Derek Jeter or Hanely Ramirez? No, because the difference in hits Jeter and HR get is much greater than the difference in hits that Everett takes away. In other words: hits + hits taken away = value.
  8. I don't think anyone has advocated Gwynn being a full-time starter. He is the team's 4th best outfielder, and 2nd best centerfielder. Since the starting CF is out, Gwynn is the best choice to take his place for 25 games. Even if he didn't get a hit today, it was worth having his defense in CF. Gross would not have made some of those plays. Taking away hits from the other team is as important as getting hits.
  9. Good point. I like both players, but you can't get too high on Gwynn, or too low on Gagne after just one game.
  10. Me to, there are quite a few people who don't though. Two hits, and took away two at least two hits that Gross may not have gotten. Plus a sacrifice and the game-winning sac fly. All around great game. But, it is only one game, and 161 to go.
  11. Exactly what I was thinking. If you need Braun to hit again, means the Cubs tied it. They probably planned on Riske pitching another inning, and instead of having him hit in the 11th, double-switched. It was actually a smart move.
  12. Not a single, but hopefully prophetic none-the-less with the Gwynn game winner in extras.
  13. You do know that both the guy on base, and Prince scored that inning. And if one walk is wild, the team would go through a lot of pitchers in each game.
  14. How is that working out for piniella, not that his top pitchers are gone.http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  15. Marmol is a righty. Ahh, my bad. It's been so long since last season. I blocked that out of my memory hoping he'd disappear.
  16. Isn't Marmol about the only lefty for the Cubs? Why have Gross hit against him? That would be a perfect spot for Dillon.
  17. Well-coached in spring training.
  18. I would agree. Near his pitch limit for the day, and he hasn't worked out of the stretch much today. Once a guy gets on, bring in the pen. Later in the year, I would have no problem keeping Sheets in longer.
  19. I only have the radio. Is it one that Gross would have gotten, or probably not?
  20. Unless the Brewers win, then they made the perfect decision.
  21. Sac fly or sac bunt. With Lee, most likely a sac fly.
  22. I think the paper today said that Gwynn would start against righties and Kaplar against lefties. For 25 games, it shouldn't hurt the team much at all. Their defense will help cover for Braun's learning curve.
  23. I know what you're saying FTJ, but I was speaking strictly on those stat lines, not taking sample sizes into effect. 3.) If Gwynn goes 0-4 in a game there is almost 0 chance he reached base. If Gross goes 0-4 he would be more likely to get on base with a walk. That is to say that hit rates fluctuate wildly, BB rates not so much. If Gwynn can't dribble a grounder through the IF he is screwed, if TGJ is in a slump he is not getting on base. Gross could yank one out of the park, or draw a walk even in a slump. 0-4 is 0-4 regardless of who does it. 0-3 with a walk would be better than 0-4. That said, walks don't score runners from 2nd or 3rd, hits do. Walks don't move runners from 1st to 3rd, hits do. That is why I believe BA is more important in OBP. Given similar OBP's and OPS's, I will take the one with the higher BA.
  24. The total OPS may be about even, but the components are not. OBP is a much more valuable component to OPS. I believe it is about 40% more valuable if I remember the stats that Russ posted a while back. On top of that, of Gwynn's higher OBP, he has a much higher average. Just as OBP is more valuable than slugging in OPS, I would guess (haven't seen any studies on it) that given equal OBP's, that the higher average would be more valuable. So, given these two stat lines, I would choose Gwynn's every day of the week.
  25. I guess we just have to hope that we get a impact guy in this draft, or that Yi can turn into a real impact player. Here's hoping that Beasley goes to the Bucks after we luck out and win the first pick. I may be in the minority, but I'd rather the Bucks get the 2nd or 3rd pick and draft Rose, from Memphis. A true point guard can change things around in a hurry. Exhibit 1 - TJ Ford's rookie season, where the Bucks made an unexpected run to the playoffs. Exhibit 2 - NO Hornets and Chris Paul. They have come out of nowhere to now competing for the one seed in the west.
