  1. A 50% K rate for Branyan might have something to do with it. Errors can happen when you put the ball in play. Did the Brewers get lucky that Reynolds threw it away? Absolutely. But, you can get lucky on groundballs, not on strikeouts.
  2. The MJS today has the Brewers projected record at 84-79. Do they know about a one game playoff in the future? Otherwise, it's just bad editing as usual.
  3. But isn't it odd that it always seem to be put the opposite way by Yost? Seems like he is always saying, and being quoted as saying, that he needs to get playing time for the subs, instead of saying the starters need an occassional day off. It's a horse apiece. Who cares how he phrases it? Saying its odd is just a way to show your dislike for Yost.
  4. Worst part is that Pinella pulled some starters including DLee. Lee's spot came up, and his replacement, Henry Blanco, hits a home run. Are you kidding me?
  5. Sounds a lot like his predecessor.
  6. Bobby Cox is an idiot because he just did a double switch and removed hit 5-hole hitter from the game.
  7. Is the game on TV today, or is it blacked out?
  8. I strongly disagree jwill. Every time that this play has been done, the only yelling by the other team is toward their own player. It isn't about hustle, in that they don't have to sprint down the line. They just have to make minimal effort to do a light jog in the direction of first base. If you can't do that, you shouldn't be playing. That is one of the most selfing things a player can do.... hit a pop up, and walk straight to the dugout. I totally agree with your other situations being jag moves. You can add those to the others listed earlier including peppering the middle with a big lead.
  9. Actually, I'm risking a for sure out for two likely outs. If it happened against us, I would be extremely upset at the teammate who got doubled up for not hustling, not the other team for doing it. That's the sole reason for not having the infield fly rule with only a guy on 1st, or 1st and 3rd. It's impossible to gain an advantage by letting the ball drop, if the batter even makes a half-hearted effort to get to first base.
  10. The bases are 65 feet (60 in some places). You can walk down the line fast enough to avoid a DP. It only works when the guy who pops it up just stands there, or walks back to the dugout. Edit: I am not dropping the ball (illegal). I am letting it drop (i.e. not touching it at all before it hits the ground). That is a huge difference. There is the risk of a funny sideways hop where we don't get any outs.
  11. That is correct. If the batter is running it out, the defense can't turn a DP and no advantage is gained. With first and second, or bases loaded, there are at least two runners that can't run until the ball hits the ground, leading to an easy DP. As a SS in softball, I use this to my advantage quite often. A lot of guys in softball won't run out pop-up's, so I just let the ball drop in front of me, and turn the DP.
  12. That is a good question for the end of the season, but at this point, you will not find a Torre or Leyland or anyone of that "caliber" available to replace Yost. With that being the case, Yost is the best option for the rest of this season.
  13. I think the manager has very little effect on the outcome, so it doesn't matter how many more years. Should Leyland, Girardi, Black, and Torre be fired because they aren't in first place. I have seen many posters and fans hold these managers in high regards through the years. Only one has a better record than the Brewers this year, even though they all have as much talent as the Brewers. The guys you mentioned above have been winners. Yost has not, that is why they shouldn't be fired. And Clint Hurdle last year? Should he have been fired at this point in the season. Edit: What made them winners? It was the players performing to their abilities. Have they forgotten how to manage this year? Leyland has more talent now than any of his Pittsburgh teams.
  14. If you were a Rockies fan, you would have said the same thing about Clint Hurdle at this time last year. You would have been wrong then too. It comes down to having talent (which the Brewers have lacked until the last two years), and the talent playing to their abilities (which the Brewers are growing into).
  15. I think the manager has very little effect on the outcome, so it doesn't matter how many more years. Should Leyland, Girardi, Black, and Torre be fired because they aren't in first place. 16. I'll give you Jack McKeon and raise you Clint Hurdle. Going into 2007, he was 352-436 for a career .447 winning percentage. On June 1, last year the Rockies were 25-30 (worse than the Brewers current record). How did that turn out for them?
  17. How many managers have been changed mid-season, and how many have made the playoffs? The only ones that have made the playoffs are McKeon, Kuehn, and I believe there was one other. If you mean that they will just start playing better with a new manager, that would be impossible to prove. So far, most Brewers players have played worse than expectations. By the end of the year, most of them should be close to projections (there are always exceptions). So, regardless of who's the manager (including Yost), odds are good that the Brewers will play better from here on out. Just like in 2007. The Brewers started out on fire, but slowed down. They finished right around their pre-season projections.
  18. Wow, a career .518 winning percentage. That might get us to .500. For every Jack McKeon, there are 50 managers who have done nothing when brought in mid-season. The people that know the most about what the manager does on, and off, the field have confidence in Yost. That would be Melvin, Mark A., and the players. If the players had a problem with Yost, it surely would have come out to Melvin in the after season player meetings last year. So, obviously that isn't the case.
  19. There is absolutely no evidence that a change in manager's would make the team any better.
  20. Nah, I've just been busy the past few days http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif Two straight wins against a really bad team isn't about to cure this. Well, 3 straight losses against a very good team brought the haters out in droves. Most fans are the type of people that I don't like as teammates. They get too excited when winning, and too depressed/upset when losing.
  21. No matter what the situation, I will always take a groundball over a strikeout. A strikout will never do any good. Sure, a groundball could result in a DP, but the odds of that are much smaller than it resulting in a hit, error, or productive out. Edit: Are strike'em out throw'em out DP's included in these statistics?
  22. I don't see it as a guess, but I guess that's gonna depend on your opinions about markov chains and statistical modelling in general. Here's a nice article that talks about the history of linear weights as a concept and also goes into the math a bit for those interested. http://danagonistes.blogspot.com/2004/10/brief-history-of-run-estimation.html Aren't these studies treating all ground balls are outs in these situations? What is the value of a groundball, or flyball, in relation to a K, regardless if its an out or not? Isn't that finding the real value of putting the ball in play?
  23. Hoffman, Maddux, and Wolf for Hall, Gwynn and prospect?
  24. Easton Flex, Stealth, or Helmer. They are all pretty similar. Worth Mayhem Just make sure you get the ASA version, as they also have USSSA versions of each model.
  25. Any chance of packaging the 8 pick and Mo Williams to move up to #2 from the Heat. I know the Heat really wanted Williams last off-season, and they need more than one piece to become contenders again. I would do whatever I can to get the rights to Derek Rose.
