  1. Do burn victims also hide their brown eyes by wearing green colored contacts?
  2. I could say the same from not seeing the difference between 2.5 PA per game and 1 PA per game. Gamel played half time while he was up, Fielder rotted on the bench as a pinch hitter. Just because my opinion is different than yours does not mean it isn't based on reasonable assumptions and I'm just sticking to my guns besides information saying I'm wrong. No such information has been supplied. Btw, I don't think Gamel was handled properly either. Just saying Fielder went through basically the same situation. Fielder spent most of his time in the bigs after the minor league season was over. He didn't play because we had a good fan favorite who needed to hold his trade value. Gamel was up at random times throughout the entire season, never really getting consistent playing time, despite having no obvious vet starter that needed to be playing. They are quite different situations, IMO. Hardy was brought up too early. I don't agree about Prince. We should have saved a service year with Weeks, but that has nothing to do with player development - he mashed once he was called up. His wrist injury has nothing to do with the call-up.
  3. Not only that, 10 runs scored equals 10 runs saved. I don't care how we produce a positive run differential, as long as we have one.
  4. With our depth at the position, we could afford to overlook Doumit's injury history a bit as well. Any of a Doumit-Rivera-Lucroy-Salome foursome could realistically make a case to be a majority starter.
  5. Quick Question: Where does the 11 come from in the bolded part below? Is he just using 11 runs per win instead of 10 there, or is that number something different altogether?
  6. I wouldn't really want Happ anyway, his K/BB is barely above two and he's not a groundball pitcher. His ERA will rise to probably the upper 3's or higher next season unless he improves. He's not really that young either, at age 27.
  7. http://www.freep.com/article/20091106/SPORTS02/91106058/1050/rss15I have a feeling Porcello was not available.http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gifhttp://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gifWe would have definitely had to add to Hardy, but he could have explored a trade for Granderson, about whom rumors of availability just won't die.
  8. I think that's a pretty good guess. I'm thinking we end up bringing in an Olivo or Doumit though, who would bat 6th or 7th and push Gomez to 8th.
  9. Melvin raving about a catcher two levels from the majors might very well be an attempt to leverage trade or contract talks as well. Just something to keep in mind.
  10. Doug Melvin is shifting towards valuing speed for defensive reasons, IMO, not offensive.
  11. Halloween's not over until you've watched the Pumpkin Dance...
  12. If he's the best we can get, fine. But please... short-term contract or bust. For the level of upgrade he may provide next season, it would not be worth sacrificing future seasons' payroll. Two years max.
  13. Yeah, I found the Log5 equation. Thanks though. As for the splits, I'm just going to have to be wrong - I'm just using each player's three year splits. That's why I'm kind of angry I have such short notice for this, I have to strip away so much and use bad projections just because I have to get it done by midday tomorrow. I don't really have time to scrutinize each step I make in calculating the projected payoffs, as long as the game theory itself is correct because that's what I'll be graded on.
  14. I can't seem to dig up the formula for calculating the expected outcome of an PA... i.e. the expected wOBA of the plate appearance given both the batter's and pitcher's wOBA. Any help?
  15. Yeah, Russ, I had bookmarked that for further reading. Unfortunately that looks much to complicated to get a strong handle on and write up four pages by tomorrow morning. I don't think the standard for complexity is too high for this class, so I'll probably do something like end's suggestion on LOOGY use, and specifically tailor it for the Yankees vs the Utley-Howard combo.
  16. One should look at the methodology, because if a metric was judged on how well it fit your current perceptions we would never learn anything new. Nobody is accepting it as true fact and blindly following FanGraphs because, like Russ emphasized, we all know its an estimate. But its an estimate we can learn something from. How accurate that estimate is depends on your critique of the methodology and not how closely it matches your preconceived notion, else you're simply running in place. Blindly dismissing WAR is close-minded. Accepting it for what it is does not equate to blindly following - the critical thinking filter is still in place.
  17. I'm not saying they factor defense in perfectly, but because a metric doesn't match up with your perception is not reason enough to reject its findings. That's simply being close-minded. You can be skeptical, you may be right to be in this case, but you really should learn about how its constructed and take objections in the methodology, not the end results.
  18. When in Madison...
  19. Isn't that basically a one player game though? In general though, the problem doesn't have to be super involved.
  20. The $$$ output by fangraphs is also descriptive, not predictive.
  21. Ha, I liked it too. I relate more to Kaepora Gaebora, however. I like'em both, and needed a fresh change.
  22. My game theory professor sprung a 4-page abstract on us today, due Thursday, outlining the game theory problem I will be solving for my final grade. So, I need a topic. Obviously, I want to do something baseball related. So I'm here for your ideas. I'll probably post some of mine as they come to me for feedback as well. I was looking forward to this, and I'm kind of put off on how short of notice he gave. I have to rush through the topic selection.
  23. As usual, I wait to the last minute. My ideas: Harry Potter (marker + zig-zag on forehead = done, don't even have to put in the contacts ; I've been told I look like HP in the past too. He's a sex symbol, right?) Princess Leia (just the wig) Elian Gonzalez Protester (T-shirt with his face + sign/hat saying "Bring Elian Home") Blind Tim McClelland (MLB logo hat + blue shirt/jacket + gray pants + sunglasses) What sounds best? And please spit out more ideas, or gloat about your costume.
  24. They still don't get it. If they have learned anything, they'd no that experience has been shown to be worth absolutely nothing. I don't care if he's worked the World Series before. Is he the best ump? Then he gets to make the calls. So instead of this... NEW YORK (AP) - Stung by a rash of blown calls in the playoffs, Major League Baseball is breaking tradition and sticking with only experienced umpires for the World Series. I want to hear this... NEW YORK (AP) - Stung by a rash of blown calls in the playoffs, Major League Baseball is breaking tradition and sticking with only quality, intelligent umpires for the World Series. Unfortunately, quality and intelligent umpires might be an oxymoron.
  25. Pam had to do some acting last night. Normally, Jim and Pam spend a half an our with an acting range between mildly amused and mildy annoyed. I laughed really loud when Creed started crying while Jim blasted the opera music.
