  1. To get the Players Association to agree to dropping the DH, you could threaten them with contraction. Two less teams equal 50 less ML spots, while no DH means 14 less ML spots. Just a thought.
  2. I'd love to see pitchers learn how to hit a little. Or at least become expert bunters. I do not want to see the DH in the NL.
  3. "Nobody here has AIDS!" "Awwww"
  4. Comcast sounds like the devil. Evil just to be evil.
  5. What lesson is that, drunk people say funny things? You honestly believe they went on to win 4 games in a row because of that one play? Or our young players should learn not to make the same youthful mistakes that cocky Lofton kid makes?
  6. Really, why would you expect a team to play differently in game 1 of a series than in game 6? To me, if a team has a 60% chance of winning the game, they'll have a 60% chance of winning each game in that series. The fact that they lost 3 then won 4, and this year may win 3 after losing 3 of 4, says little to nothing. Its just the order they happened to win 4 times over a small number of games.
  7. BillyHallFan, I'm you two years into the future. Like, exactly. (Except for the work thing - I'm a lazy bum.) I'm in my last semester at MATC in Madison, finishing all my GenEds. So I still haven't really settled on a major - but whatever I pick I want it to help me land something in a minor league baseball front office somewhere. I have been leaning towards something in business, likely accounting for me, but because I'm transfering to UW-Madison I'm nervous I won't get into it. I was also wondering if a statistics degree could help me get a foot in somewhere. Unfortunately, I can't find solid guidance anywhere either. I even emailed a minor league ballclub about what qualifications they want in interns, and got a absolutely worthless response. So not much help, but share with me anything you learn and I will do the same. Definately curious to hear anyone else's advice.
  8. Sounds like my college essays.
  9. Bottom line, he doesn't think the Brewers are going to go the expensive free agent approach to fix 3B, but he does say at the very end of his blog piece that the Brewers seriously need to consider Braun's defensive liabilties at 3B and consider moving him to another position. I'm starting to really agree with this. While I highly doubt Braun will play anywhere but 3B next season, unless he shows improvement I sure hope the organization isn't so stubborn it won't look into sliding him to the OF. You can't just move guys around every year, you have to show some commitment. But at a certian point, they have to realize it'll be for the better of the team. I'm slightly nervous that they'll be so strongly commited to Braun at 3B and Hall in CF that they'll never seriously consider moving them.
  10. I said "there are plenty of guys who've never translated their talent to the bigs". And 27 is not that old anymore. Over the last two years, we've had two comparable - Gross (26) and Dillon (31). Not all-stars, but I'm not saying Botts will be. Podsednik's (27) another. Our opinions aren't that far apart, its just our outlook. We both see him as far of a sure thing, but I cite the example of why he may work, and you cite the failures. Nothing wrong with that, just pointing out that our opinions are the same.
  11. Posada - I'd love to see him in Milwaukee, but I wonder just how much money he'll get on the open market. New York will probably come with the best offer. Prediction - Yankees Pettitte - I like your speculation. I think Pettitte is a good fit for St. Louis even without Torre. Prediction - St. Louis Rodriguez - We all know he'll opt out, and if Steinbrenner isn't bluffing on his "we won't be bidding for him" talk, then he's an idiot. Rodriguez has got to be tired of the crap he gets there, so if anyone comes with a comparable offer, I think he'll take it. I don't really want to see him in Chicago or Boston, so I hope he ends up back on the West Coast. Prediction - Anaheim Rivera - I just can't picture him anywhere else. He's peeved that he doesn't have an extention yet, but I think the Yanks will still offer him the best deal and he'll take it. Prediction - Yankees Clemens - We agree here as well, he's gotta get off the HGH. Prediction - Retirement Final prediction - The Yankees end their consecutive playoff streak next season, and the media totally blasts Steinbrenner for letting Alex Rodriguez and Joe Torre go. Ironic, because they really are the ones who ran Rodriguez out of town, and the new manager won't be the reason they missed the playoffs.
  12. Yes, he's been bad in limited time in the bigs. But his .320 / .436 / .545 / .981 AAA line looks tasty to anyone. He's a doubles machine in the minors. There's plenty of guys who've never been able to translate their talent to the bigs, but its too early to completely give up on him. I don't think anyone was asking for him to be put in a starting role, but as a 4th/5th guy next year he has a lot of upside.
  13. we are not in experimentation mode with this team. So we should move guys around?
  14. Ooo, good call! Benoit+Botts for Gwynn+something smallish. We know they like Gwynn and would give up a quality reliever for him, so let's get Botts out of there as well. He hits great verse both hands too, as a switch hitter.
  15. I think having great defense, on the other hand, is more beneficial in the regular season, over a long period of time. Obviously, it helps to have a Troy Tulowitzki in the middle of the diamond any time of the season, but over the course of five games defense can't "save" enough runs to make up for a guy that would have a terrible bat and great glove. What if you look at the season in sets of 5 games? If in each set of five games, the better bat is more beneficial than the good glove, why would the cumulative be any different?
  16. The chart definitely illustrates just how dominant Hammond was during June and July, and how poor he pitched the rest of the season. I know BABIP helps give an idea of just how lucky or unlucky a pitcher may be given the number of batted balls put in play, as his BABIP for April in particularly seems really high. I'm not 100% sure of how BABIP works (isn't .300 about average?), but it would seem that he may have run into some bad luck that month in particular. I see his HR rate as the telling split. He gave up only a slightly smaller amount of FB's, but the HR rate plummeted. His HR rate the rest of the season is really high. Could be luck, could be ballpark. In his three bad months, his HR/FB rate (largely luck), is a unlucky 18.2%. Overall, he had a 13.8% HR/FB. Major league average is usually around 11%. As for BABIP, look how closely his LD's correlate with BABIP (and in turn, BA and OBP). Except April, so I'd definately say April was bad luck. Minor league BABIP's will also be a little higher because of worse defenses.
  17. I think people are citing an emphasis on defense and pitching as a reason for their regular season success as well. True, but they also improved offensively.
  18. Rockies, 2006 - 813 runs Rockies, 2007 - 860 runs There is a big difference in sacrificing offense to better you defense (like we'd be doing by starting Gwynn) and just getting better all around, obviously. The Rockies replaced CF Sullivan (79 OPS+) and SS Barmes (49 OPS+) with Taveras (89) and Tulowitzki (109). Those were two offensive and defensive upgrades, especially at SS. If you want to follow this Rockies model, I'm right there with you (though not sure how we're going to do it). Just don't think sacrificing offense for defense was the Rockies model this year. Our defense is bad, this we all know. This is just another thread that's already breaking down into a defensive statistics argument when everyone here agrees with each other. But I think the only way to improve our defense without hurting our team is just with our current players development. Braun, Weeks, and Hall all have the potential to get better at their position. We could see an upgrade in LF defense this offseason. We'll never be a top defensive team, but we should see some improvement without going defense crazy in the offseason.
  19. Track his phone location, get on a plane, take the phone from his hand, and throw it in the nearest body of water. All the while giving him an intense stare down.
  20. I would be thrilled with a midseason AAA promotion followed by a September callup for LaPorta. That would be awesome. The Brewers led the league in HR, and that's with Weeks and Hall with down seasons, Braun a partial season as a rookie, and Prince at age 23. If LaPorta pans out like we all hope he does, this offense is going to have an amazing little window. Its just crazy to think what we had this season is only the beginning. I had no idea Stetter was already 27. Seemed younger, like 24/25. I still like him and Bray as internal guys that could be a big help next season.
  21. Well, just spent the last hour breaking up a fight between a drunk friend and a drunk neighbor. One of my drunk friends, a girl, fights with everyone she sees so often its marginally comical. Usually other females, but today she picked on a male neighbor of mine. She called him some names, for no reason mind you, so he fired back a little. On of my male friends immediately stands up for her (why?), and it went from there. After a little blood I get my friends to leave the building, but of course my neighbor cleans himself up and then runs after them two blocks down the street. So gotta break up another one. I think I need some new friends, because that's just rediculus.
  22. I don't understand, that doesn't even seem possible.
