  1. the brewers don't mess around. las vegas redeye to houston to o'hare to ground transportation. the united flight has landed in chicago, so wang should be getting on the tollway soon to milwaukee.
  2. wei-chung wang has two minor league options remaining. important to note that if he spends less than 20 days optioned to the minor leagues in 2017, he will not burn his second option. will be interesting to see how long wang stays on the 25-man or the major league disabled list (if necessary) before rosters can expand in september. wang will also be pleased to see that an entirely separate thread with his name in the topic title was created on this forum to discuss his addition to the club's 40-man roster.
  3. taylor jungmann threw 6.0 innings and surrendered two runs in colorado springs on 26 july. he could easily be well-rested by guerra's next turn in the rotation and has the benefit of major league experience . . . plus, he'll be out of options in 2018. the club needs to see what they have in him.
  4. barring a deadline trade, i'm predicting junior guerra optioned today for wei-chung wang, kirk nieuwenhuis dfa'd for matt garza's pending return, and paolo espino optioned for guerra's next start for either brandon woodruff or taylor jungmann.
  5. examining the bullpen now, prior to wei-chung wang's arrival, with number of minor league options remaining. jacob barnes (2) oliver drake (0) paolo espino (2, already burned his 2017 option) josh hader (2, already burned his 2017 option) jared hughes (0) corey knebel (1) anthony swarzak (0) carlos torres (0) already optioned, but can be recalled at any point during the season (requires a 10-day minimum stay in the minors unless replacing an injured player): michael blazek (1, will burn his 2017 option in a matter of days unless recalled to replace an injured player) taylor jungmann (1, already burned his 2017 option; has been stretched out as a starter) jorge lopez (1, already burned his 2017 option) all other optioned pitchers on the 40-man are either starters or recovering from an injury.
  6. if i recall correctly, nieuwenhuis got a lot of playing time in august--right up until the 31 august postseason-eligibility trading deadline--even after domingo santana had returned from the disabled list. then his playing time disappeared. i am still convinced that they were shopping him.
  7. southwest flight 3933 is boarding right now in las vegas and should arrive at mitchell at 11:30 am. wang better be on that plane.
  8. this may help explain today's roster move. at any rate, it puts the team back to a five-man bench. probably will go back to four once matt garza comes off the disabled list.
  9. unless replacing an injured player, an optioned player has to stay down for at least 10 days. that explains phillips and broxton. see the post above for wren.
  10. if a player spends more than 20 days optioned to the minor leagues in a single season, he burns a minor league option. when it's so close to being able to have expanded rosters in september, why risk burning an option for a player like kyle wren if he needs to be sent down between now and 1 september? kirk nieuwenhuis is a stopgap until keon broxton or brett phillips can be recalled. i'll be shocked if he's on the major league roster in the second week of august.
  11. wily peralta designated for assignment. the brewers have seven days to trade, release or try to outright him to the minor leagues. kirk nieuwenhuis has his contract selected. he is out of minor league options and would have to be outrighted again to be sent to the minor leagues (an assignment that he could refuse). the roster remains at 39.
  12. of the current 40-man, these are the players that will enter 2018 spring training with no minor league options remaining: jesus aguilar jett bandy michael blazek (assuming he's not recalled very soon to replace an injured player) keon broxton (assuming he spends more than 20 days optioned in 2017) oliver drake jared hughes taylor jungmann wily peralta hernan perez manny pina yadiel rivera anthony swarzak (will be eligible for free agency) eric thames (by nature of his contract) carlos torres jonathan villar stephen vogt
  13. maybe nieuwenhuis is in milwaukee because jonathan villar is about to be traded to detroit. makes hernan perez the starting second baseman, and gives the brewers a true backup centerfielder for the coming days.
  14. southwest flight 1531 left denver at 6:17 am local time and landed at mitchell about 90 minutes ago.
  15. same advantage with davies as with guerra: keep him optioned for less than 20 days, and the option isn't burned. davies has two minor league options remaining.
  16. sure. nieuwenhuis is a stopgap guy that's not in the organization's plans after 2017. he's a guy that could be a placeholder until keon broxton or brett phillips spend at least 10 days optioned to the minors (or in broxton's case, less than 20 days as to not burn his sole remaining option). there's a 40-man spot open for him. he's outrighted back to the minor leagues well before 31 august (and thus not eligible for the club's postseason roster), and the brewers can explore selecting the contract of another guy (i.e. kyle wren) that they won't have to option for more than 20 days (with september roster expansion looming), and not burn any options for that guy.
  17. swarzak was activated before thursday's game against the nationals. he was in uniform . . . but when down by a dozen-plus runs, why would any manager in his right mind put him in? swarzak was used yesterday in a situation that he was traded for. wasn't the best performance, but he got the job done.
  18. brent suter has definitely earned a spot in the brewers rotation. assuming matt garza comes back next week, and that chase anderson returns one to two weeks ahead of schedule, what should happen to the weakest link in junior guerra? guerra has one minor league option remaining, but it could go unused if he spends less than 20 days optioned to the minor leagues. perhaps the brewers will explore guerra getting a couple starts in the minors after anderson returns and recall guerra in september?
  19. blazek will likely burn his final option unless recalled to replace an injured player. optioned today; paolo espino recalled. some way, some how, wily peralta survives.
  20. sky sox 2017 stats
  21. they may have given neftali feliz a longer leash to see if he could turn things around and build value. stephen vogt would not have been claimed. ryan cordell not traded.
  22. wang has already burned one option. if he's optioned for more than 20 days in 2017, he burns his second option. the club may be considering delaying wang's call until a few weeks into august. also have to consider that the sky sox are very likely bound for the playoffs.
  23. if they option blazek and he ends up spending the minimum stay required (i.e. doesn't replace an injured player), he will burn his final option. blazek is a better option for 2018 (internally or as a trade candidate) if he retains that final option.
  24. as mentioned in the minor league forum, espino was scratched last night. very likely he's recalled today to be the long guy in the bullpen.
  25. after today's embarrassment, one would think that the brewers would want to have fresh bullpen arms for the weekend series against the cubs. jorge lopez could be recalled, and has not thrown much in recent days. tyler webb would be eligible to be recalled tomorrow, but he's been hit hard since being optioned. taylor jungmann just threw 6.0 yesterday, so he'd be of little help. paolo espino is scheduled to start tonight for colorado springs. fortunately, one 40-man spot is open, and another could be created via the dfa of wily peralta. you have to think that the brewers are going to bring up at least one arm by tomorrow.
