  1. in being told that he won't make the 25-man roster, brandon boggs will have to be outrighted (if not claimed, he has the right to refuse the minor league assignment). that likely opens up a spot for jeremy reed. as far as position players go, it appears to be down to erick almonte and luis cruz. the subtraction of cruz opens up a spot for almonte. the addition of cruz keeps almonte off the 40-man roster. it seems more and more likely that the brewers are banking on the return on jonathan lucroy by april 6th, which is when the brewers would need that 5th starter. if lucroy returns, either wil nieves or george kottaras would be removed from the 40-man roster, allowing the brewers to purchase the contract of a minor leaguer such as marco estrada. if lucroy isn't quite ready by april 6th, i could see the brewers cutting one of the two catchers and recalling martin maldonado for a brief stint.
  2. with the acquisition of nyjer morgan, the 40-man roster is full again.
  3. no worries . . . all of the accounts of the transaction that i saw stated that rosario was assigned to brevard county . . . and not optioned to brevard county. the latter happens to players on the 40-man roster, the former does not.
  4. yesterday's headlines (jsonline, particularly) really made it sound like jonathan lucroy will not be ready for opening day . . . but when i read the quotes within the articles, i didn't get that assessment. i chalked it up to the jsonline headline being written by the same college intern that wrote the blog. am i right? am i wrong? or am i just dreaming?
  5. to further clarify, the player must be in minor league camp and/or the minor leagues for twenty days for the option burning to be official. if mat gamel were recalled before his twenty days were up and spent the entire year on the major league roster (or major league disabled list), he would enter 2012 with his final option remaining, and his time spent in the minors counting towards major league service time. so . . . the final options of mat gamel and mark rogers haven't been wasted . . . yet.
  6. the brewers gave up on pat egan (and the orioles gave up on adrian rosario). one roster spot has opened up, putting the current roster at 39.
  7. it's reported that if the player comes from within the organization, it's marco estrada.
  8. when the brewers have been auditioning that fifth starter, who's been behind the plate more often than not? george kottaras. it's pretty obvious that he makes the club, and even if jonathan lucroy starts the season on the disabled list, i think wil nieves' 40-man roster spot is better spent on a non-catcher. catching corps on opening day is either jonathan lucroy/george kottaras or george kottaras/martin maldonado.
  9. if it's estrada, nobody's pulling for jonathan lucroy to be ready by 31 march more than pat egan (outside of jonathan lucroy himself). why? pat egan's slim chances of breaking camp with the brewers require that a spot on the 40-man roster open up to add estrada. the departure of george kottaras or wil nieves will open up that spot . . . instead of taking the spot of pat egan.
  10. the brewers and the orioles are in the unique position of having selected a player from the other's minor league ranks in this past rule 5 draft. if both players clear waivers, it's quite possible that the brewers and the orioles just agree to trade the two players. bottom line: this removes pat egan from the 40-man roster--which is what this thread is about. i'm just predicting that in order to ensure that other teams don't claim him, the brewers will wait until after the season starts to pass him through waivers (and effectively open up a spot on their 40-man roster) . . . and benefit from having him as an available bullpen arm for at least a few games until others return from injuries.
  11. correct. but he has to clear waivers first. but all of the other teams would face the same situation: they have to have a spot on their 40-man roster and their 25-man roster. as soon as the player is removed from the 25-man roster during his season as a rule 5 draftee, he has to be placed on waivers. any team can claim him. if no team claims him, he has to be offered back to the club from which he was drafted (in this case, baltimore).
  12. right. but it's less likely that 28 other teams will claim him in april when their rosters are pretty much set. the timing of the move greatly reduces the number of teams that could take pat egan.
  13. with the injuries and slow return from previous injuries of so many pitchers, coupled with his strong early performance, i'm now thinking that pat egan makes the team (this is assuming that manny parra, latroy hawkins and zack greinke all start the season on the disabled list). the brewers' brass anticipate that fewer teams will have roster flexibility to claim pat egan if he's placed on waivers in april instead of right before the end of spring training. look at the mariners, for example. their 40-man roster is full right now, and many are anticipating that up to five players in camp on minor league contracts will make the team. the mariners will have to jettison five players, allowing any other team to claim any of those players. if they're claimed, they take up a roster space that could otherwise be awarded to pat egan. thus, in the interests of keeping pat egan in the organization, the brewers will decide the best time to give up on him is after the flurry of roster moves that typically occur right before the season starts.
  14. i went to bed before braddock came in last night, so i don't know exactly how it played out. the box score sure looked ugly for him. i predict braddock won't be on the 25-man roster, and that a healthy stetter and a healthy parra will. however, i have every bit of faith that braddock will be back with the club at some point in 2011.
  15. i look at it this way . . . if kotsay's spot on the roster is such a sure thing, why is there a clause in his contract that calls for a bonus based on his roster status?
  16. the optimist in me just stated they've burned his final option. if mark rogers spends nearly a full season in milwaukee as a starter, it's not good news for the team.
  17. the brewers just burned his final option. it's make or break next year.
  18. if looking for a 5th starter over multiple games, the brewers have stated that it could be two or more players that contribute. knowing that rogers wouldn't be ready to take the first start, perhaps they sent him down to motivate the other internal candidates. granted, those other internal candidates might only pitch in one game, but for many of them, it's their first shot at the big leagues. others that think (or have been told) that they're in the running as a replacement starter have got to pretty excited as the probable favorite (in rogers) is not being considered for that first start. granted, this discussion is moot if the brewers do indeed opt for a four-man rotation for the first few weeks of the season.
  19. mark rogers optioned to nashville. this doesn't mean he can't be recalled right before the brewers need a 5th starter.
  20. hart was available but was benched on opening day. edmonds got the start. hart had a miserable spring training, and many suspected he would be released in the spring as his arbitration-awarded contract was not guaranteed.
  21. i think gamel (if healthy) makes the club 31 march, but only because the brewers aren't carrying their planned 5th starter. a day before the 5th starter is needed, gamel gets optioned to nashville.
  22. it is possible that if gamel is available for right field on 31 march and hart needs just a few more days, that the club could keep the 5th starter in the minor leagues to start the season and option gamel to nashville when the 5th starter is needed. of course, this all assumes that no disabled list time is needed for either outfielder.
  23. anyone else starting to get worried? i don't want mark kotsay in right field on opening day.
  24. i'm wondering if braddock is on the bubble and if stetter has a better chance. i realize stetter is just coming back from an injury, but braddock hasn't been exactly sharp in camp.
