  1. i'm not a big fan of a song that reminds us about war. i'd much rather that "america the beautiful" became our national anthem . . . especially if it prompts this and future generations to become better stewards of this nation's spectacular beauty.
  2. let's take that same scenario and change the severity of the injury to one of the catchers: it only warrants a trip to the 15-day disabled list and therefore keeps that player on the 40-man roster. the team has to call up a catcher for just a few weeks and the 40-man roster is full (and full of players we really want to keep in the organization). i'd much prefer for that catcher to already be on the 40-man roster and to never have been outrighted--preserving the team's control over the player. somebody's gotta go to make room for kotsay. our most obvious wastes of roster space right now are one of two catchers that clearly won't be with the organization by the conclusion of spring training (nieves or kottaras), and the spot held by a rule v draft pick (egan). given that we have mike rivera on a minor league deal, i'd feel a lot better about cutting kottaras or nieves now to make room for kotsay. if lucroy gets injured, we still have depth and will likely have greater roster flexibility at the end of spring training to purchase rivera's contract than we would now. and, given that the brewers have one of the best medical staffs in mlb, we're not going to have any players go on the 60-day disabled list in 2011.
  3. if maldonado is outrighted, the brewers (assuming they carry only two catchers on the 25-man roster, and one of them is lucroy) will be left with no other catchers on the 40-man roster. you can option lucroy, and you can option maldonado . . . but that means both kottaras and nieves make the 25-man roster. i'd feel a lot better about having catching depth on the 40-man roster (in maldonado) throughout the entire season, rather than having to purchase the contract of a catcher during the season and deal with a potential roster space dilemma.
  4. barring a major injury to jonathan lucroy (and a trip to the 60-day disabled list), the brewers are going to have to remove a catcher from the 40-man roster before the end of spring training (wil nieves or george kottaras) . . . which would obviously clear up a roster spot. too bad that decision can't be made now with the assurances that the three remaining catchers are all guaranteed to be 100% healthy come opening day.
  5. the mariners are standing behind milton bradley.
  6. meltdown was arrested. it will be interesting to see how the mariners react.
  7. the washington nationals will have at least 30 non-roster invitees at their big league camp.
  8. a rental car is a must, but you may save some money by renting and returning your car away from the airport. phoenix has a new light rail system that appears to work in conjunction with a shuttle to get to and from sky harbor airport. if you can find a car rental place along one of the light rail stops in the city and can afford the additional time to take light rail, you may save some money (especially in taxes or surcharges). i can't comment on the light rail system as it was under construction when i was last in phoenix.
  9. i bet we're thinking of the same player. couldn't have been more than five to seven years ago . . . and perhaps even more recently than that. thanks for the other finds.
  10. my memory is fuzzy, but i can confirm this: it was a number of years ago. it was not a significant player. it was a man.
  11. i recall it happening one year . . . i laughed when i read the report. when dealing with arbitration-eligible players, it's quite rare for the team to submit a higher figure than what the player submits. who was the last mlb player this happened to? did he fire his agent afterwards? any brewers ever? what happens in the salary arbitration process if this occurs? i seem to recall that the player's requested salary was bumped up to match the team's submitted amount.
  12. i still want capuano back. he's good insurance to have.
  13. he could be traded . . . assuming another team is willing to pick up the remainder of his contract.
  14. especially if you're a parent of ben hendrickson.
  15. was it truly macha's intention to put hoffman in to the game in which he saved number 600? he had been ejected, and willie randolph took over managing duties. had macha not been watching the game from his office, would he have removed axford from the game and brought in hoffman with only a two run lead? if macha truly felt he wouldn't have given the ball to hoffman, he'll certainly never admit it. i'm just curious about the brain trust behind the pitching move.
  16. martin maldonado is worth a spot on the 40-man roster?
  17. i'm looking for a positive in all of this, and the only thing i can think of is that we're back to a twelve-man pitching staff.
  18. if villanueva stays in class aaa for the rest of the season, does that his extend his remaining seasons of arbitration eligibility (and thus the brewers' control of him) by one more season? i thought i had read that when he was optioned to nashville.
  19. does this make the first "d" in "dodgers" silent?
  20. is the current situation worse? we're still without hart and edmonds, and had been without braddock. given a thirteen-man pitching staff (fourteen if you count inglett), we're thinner than the olsen twins. thank goodness tomorrow is an off day.
  21. if i recall correctly, whenever they added joe dillon to the 40-man roster. i don't believe it was due to a clause in his contract . . i believe that they just wanted to reward him. within less than two months, he was called up to the brewers.
  22. he may be on the 40-man roster, per tom haudricourt . . .
