  1. interesting to see players (tyler saladino and cory spangenberg) playing in a major league exhibition game hours after being optioned. i wonder if the brewers did that as a courtesy to give them a head start in finding housing in san antonio, instead of optioning them after the game.
  2. tuffy gosewisch and jay jackson have been told that will they start the season with class aaa san antonio.
  3. no word if this is a major league deal or not. wilson appears to be out of options. if a major league deal, a corresponding move will need to be made on the 40-man roster--likely either bobby wahl to the 60-day injured list, or erik kratz claimed or outrighted.
  4. san antonio will probably trot out a rotating cast at first base . . . especially if erik kratz is outrighted to that club. look for saladino to get a lot of starts at first base.
  5. spangenberg probably had the edge over tyler saladino for the final utility spot, but given that the brewers are likely looking at carrying 13 pitchers, it's tough for a position player to crack the 25-man roster.
  6. tyler saladino and cory spangenberg both optioned today. if either spends at least 20 days optioned, they burn their final option.
  7. 11:00 am on opening day. that's the latest deadline i ever recall seeing.
  8. tomlin is hoping to crack the braves' roster. minor league deal with invite to big league camp.
  9. opt-out dates for fields are 30 april and 25 june.
  10. tomlin can opt out of his contract on 21 march if not assured by the brewers that he will break camp with the club. the brewers can also pay him a $100,000 retention bonus to keep him in the minor leagues until presumably, 1 june. it's unclear if that retention bonus works like a club option or a mutual option. tomlin appears willing to go to class aaa san antonio if no better offers arise.
  11. josh fields has signed a minor league deal with the brewers and will spend finish spring training in big league camp. he is ticketed for san antonio. it appears that fields has one minor league option remaining.
  12. rhp josh fields becomes the 17th non-roster invitee in big league camp. 8 non-roster invitees remain in camp.
  13. rhp deolis guerra has been reassigned to minor league camp. 7 non-roster invitees remain in camp.
  14. deolis guerra has been reassigned to minor league camp.
  15. with major league spring training about to end, how else would you expect him to get ready for the season? 14 march was a notable date, as it was 10 days before opening day. any player who finished 2018 on a 40-man roster or 60-day disabled list signed before that date to a minor league contract would be automatically entitled to a late march opt-out if not placed on the 25-man roster or paid a $100,000 retention bonus. now, after 14 march, it's whatever opt-out date the player can negotiate. i imagine this is why the players union was against roster expansion to start the season instead of finishing it. doing so would allow clubs to open with fringe 40-man guys who would normally be optioned, and then sign veterans to minor league deals, and hold eventual spots for them that normally open up at the end of spring training or the beginning of the season (i.e. the brewers will likely be outrighting a catcher and putting bobby wahl on the 60-day injured list).
  16. saladino can be placed on optional or outright assignment in 2019, as he has one option remaining and has never been outrighted.
  17. if the brewers wish to keep tomlin in the minor leagues, they must pay him a $100,000 retention bonus before the end of spring training. this is standard for any player who finished the previous season on the 40-man roster or 60-day injured list. he then will be granted an opt-out of 1 june, unless otherwise negotiated.
  18. adrian houser and burch smith both expected to be stretched out as starters with san antonio.
  19. burch smith has been reassigned to minor league camp. he is expected to be a starter for san antonio.
  20. inf jake hager, rhp miguel sánchez and rhp burch smith have been reassigned to minor-league camp. the club has 8 non-roster invitees remaining in camp.
  21. adrian houser and jacob nottingham optioned. houser, regardless of the amount of time spent optioned this year, will burn his fourth option. nottingham, if optioned more than 20 days, will burn his second option.
  22. because tomlin finished the 2018 season on a 40-man roster and has at least six years of mlb service time, he qualifies for these retention bonus considerations. in a nutshell, the brewers could delay a decision on tomlin as late as 1 june if he accepts a $100,000 retention bonus. otherwise, he can be released by the brewers before the end of spring training--allowing him to sign with any club.
  23. bobby wahl is a candidate for the 60-day injured list. assuming jacob nottingham is optioned and no other catchers open the season on the major league disabled list, one of manny pina or erik kratz will be outrighted off the 40-man roster (assuming the brewers carry only two catchers on the 25-man).
  24. mauricio dubon (could burn second option), troy stokes jr. (could burn first of three options) and tyrone taylor (could burn first of three options) have all been optioned to the minor leagues. any of these players will burn their options if they spend more than 20 days optioned in 2019.
