  1. ROUND 1S-a: Kentrail Davis - OF - SIGNED 5'9", 195, L/R, University of Tennessee (Tennessee) http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y155/colbyjack/kentrail_davis.jpg BREWERFAN.NET SCOUTING REPORT: Davis is a pure, gifted hitter and overall offensive player that entered the spring as one of the best overall hitters available for the 2009 draft. A lingering wrist injury and a hamstring injury may have limited Davis' production during his sophomore year at Tennessee, although he still had a strong season. He was named a freshman all-american in 2008, and played for Team USA last summer. His troublesome wrist caused him to end his summer prematurely. He was named an Aflac All-American during the summer of 2006 for his success as a high school player, and drew comparisons to Kirby Puckett even back then for his shorter, stocky stature and sparkplug approach. He may profile in a more similar fashion to Shannon Stewart as an exciting offensive performer that profiles best at one of the top three spots of the lineup. He has good speed and surprising power, giving him 20/20 potential. While he has good bat speed and can crush the best fastballs, he struggles to recognize breaking pitches, although at the same time he does work counts and knows how to get on base via the free pass. Defensively he's a 'tweener that fits best in left field due to less than ideal arm strength and instincts. 2. ROUND 1: Eric Arnett - RHP - SIGNED 6'5", 230, R/R, Indiana University (Indiana) http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y155/colbyjack/eric_arnett.jpg BREWERFAN.NET SCOUTING REPORT: Arnett is an extremely athletic, tall and well built right-handed pitcher whose stock has soared this spring with improved stuff and results. Prior to this year, he worked both out of the Hoosiers bullpen and starting rotation, topping out in the low-90s. He responded this year consistently showing a 91-95 fastball creeping to the 96-97 range on occasion. He gained momentum as the season progressed, on his way to a way to a 12-2 season with a 2.50 ERA in which he was named co-Big Ten pitcher of the year. He struck out 109 batters in 108 innings of work, giving up 82 hits and allowing 39 walks. What most impressed scouts was how well he maintained his velocity deep into ballgames, and saved one of his best performances for one of his last, tosses a gem versus Purdue in the Big Ten championship. In addition to his fastball, he throws a wicked slider that he is able to add and subtract off of. The mid-80s version of the pitch is a swing and miss pitch that bites hard, down and away from right-handed batters. He can take a little off and throw a low-80s version to drop the pitch in the zone. His changeup needs some work, and some question his mechanics, leading some to believe a future move to the bullpen may occur. However, with two good pitches and command, along with his athleticism and the way he maintains his velocity deep into games, I'm sure the Brewers think nothing of Arnett other than a future starter. 3. ROUND 1: Dylan Covey - RHP6'2", 195, R/R, Maranatha HS (CA) http://extras.mnginteractive.com/live/media/site513/2009/0624/20090624_111112_SS24-PASCOVEY_300.jpg (Miguel Melendez)SCOUTING REPORT: Covey is armed with one of the strongest and fastest arms of any draft-eligible pitcher this year. And as good as his stuff is, one of the most impressive things he does is to disrupt the timing off the opposing batters, showing an advanced knowledge of pitching. He is fearless and aggressive, and does a really nice job owning the outside corner to right-handed batters. He has a slow windup but a fast arm, although there appears to be some effort to his delivery. An overall plus athlete with loose actions, he’s built strongly with broad shoulders and a strong lower half. His fastball sits in the 89-92 range, can touch 95-96, and he has a great three-pitch mix with a very good curveball and a surprisingly refined changeup. Despite battling some injuries early last summer, he settled down late in the summer and into the fall and put his name in the top 5-10 overall prospects coming into the spring. There were some concerns in recent weeks as he wasn't pitching as well late in the spring and his velocity was down some. He is part of an incredible recruiting class for the University of San Diego. 10. Have you heard rumors of him connected to Milwaukee? Also, I see you had Tate fall out of round 1. Is his asking price higher than the rumored $6 million? No, no rumors of Wheeler being connected to the Brewers, just the player I thought was the best fit when I put the mock together from 1 through 32. If I put it together again tonight, or even a few hours after I made that last one, it probably would stack up a little differently. As for Tate, as I noted in the lead-in to the mock draft, his future and the Padres pick at #3 seem to be intertwined at this point in time. If the Padres don't take him, he could fall a long way (outside of the rumors of the A's being hot for him). If the Padres do take him, of course that's a completely different story. As Jim Callis noted today, there aren't too many teams in the top 10 connected with Tate, and for someone asking for $6M, that's not a good thing. Excepting Donavan Tate, who is a horse of a different color, and Bobby Borchering, who seems to have separated himself from the HS hitter pack, who do you guys like most between Davidson, Wil Myers, Mike Trout, and Everett Williams? I've never really gone into Tate, because it seemed clear that the Brewers would never have a chance to take him, but he's not quite the same bonafide, can't miss prospect that guys like Ken Griffey and Darryl Strawberry were. It's not as for sure that he's going to be able to hit as a pro. Mike Trout has separated himself the most from the next pack. He has been able to play in front of a lot of front office executives this spring, and they all walk away with new glowing remarks to share about him. His bat has been in question too, but he has started to erase those concerns, and he's a good (not great) all around athlete.
  11. Not enough info right now to know, or to automatically drop Gibson. I have a few phone calls scheduled for tomorrow and over the weekend that I hope will allow me to add my finishing touches to the mock draft. I will say that Gibson has never really been known as a flamethrower. While his velocity is noticeably down, almost every time I have seen him pitch he's in the 88-91 range, and he has tossed a pretty long season (I think he has something like 5 CGs too, which could definitely lead to some fatigue).
  12. I got my 5-day out version up this evening. As noted via this link and above, I plan to have a more polished one on Monday at PGX. 5 Tool Talk Mock Draft
  13. Thanks a ton for the amount of time and effort you put into this TheCrew07. That's really cool, and I think forward to the other ones you add. I would make a request, but I doubt you'll put the camera down Peralta and Frederickson who I believe are scheduled to both go tomorrow (Thursday).
  14. Thanks for the reminder 'kow. I'll try to update my 5TT mock draft this week, but my final projection will likely come on Monday at PGX. Here's my somewhat-stab at the first-half of the first round from a couple of weeks ago: http://www.pgcrosschecker.com/articles/DisplayArticle.aspx?article=1308 And here's David Rawnsley's first-round projection from a few weeks ago (subscribers only): http://www.pgcrosschecker.com/articles/DisplayArticle.aspx?article=1254 Jonathan Mayo hasn't gotten past the top 20 picks yet, but his efforts should be mentioned as well since he has easy access to the bureau and speaks to quite a few people in the game: http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20090528&content_id=5009386&vkey=draft2009&fext=.jsp
  15. Myers actually doesn't have much experience catching, similar to Lawrie. He even admitted in an interview with my PGX associate Jim Ecker that he has relied more on his arm strength and athleticism when he has caught this year. His bat, like Lawrie's, may be too good to slow down by trying to have him learn how to catch at the minor league level. So yes, I definitely think he could play 3B, which is probably a better spot for him anyway.
  16. Nice to see Mark Rogers have a nice night on the mound, facing the minimum in his 2 innings of work. Also for BC, Gindl has a pair of OF assists. Brett Lawrie hits a 3-run shot in the 7th to propel the T-Rats to a 4-3 victory. That's gritty clutch! How good is it to see Jonathan Lucroy with three hits today? I don't think there is any other prospect in the system whose start I have been more surprised by. It's still early enough in the season for him to turn his numbers around, even if he doesn't go 3-4 every day.
  17. With prep hitters such as Stassi, Borchering and Davidson being linked to the Brewers, another name I feel compelled to bring up is North Carolina prep catcher/third baseman Wil Myers. Myers is pretty much a Brett Lawrie clone, a player known for his bat and athleticism/versatility, but not necessarily for his defense. He has been drawing more interest for his ability (emphasis on ability) to play catcher, but like Lawrie, I'm not so sure he should stick there long-term. I have a feeling he gets taken before the Brewers make their pick, but if he doesn't, he makes a lot of sense for them.
  18. Jim Callis makes prep LHP Garrett Gould his pick for the Brewers in his latest mock draft. He notes that the team has been scouting Bobby Borchering, Mike Trout, Max Stassi and Matt Davidson hard. Borchering and Trout won't make it to the team's pick.
  19. I know the success rate for players returning from TJ surgery is pretty good these days, but I wouldn't risk it. Not early, and not with a pitcher or a catcher. Let a team like the Yankees, Red Sox or Angels go out and spend a lot of money on such a risk. Nick Adenhart may have been one success story (prior to his tragic death of course), but as brewerguy71 already noted, the Brewers really aren't in a position to take such risks.
  20. It's funny you mentioned Dave Bush, the player I compared Stock to in my most recent notes column: http://www.5tooltalk.com/notes-mainpage.html I think the sandwich round might be a stretch, but most didn't consider guys like Dykstra and Frederickson sandwich picks at this time last year, so you never know. He definitely has a fresh arm, and as I noted in my notes column, I liked what I saw. Given the Bush comparison, you're talking about a guy that maxes out as a #3 starter, and the Brewers are more known for going for high risk/high reward type pitchers in the early rounds. If he wants to catch and someone is willing to pay him to catch, than no, it's not a problem. He's going to get drafted early for his arm though, not his bat, or his glove, so he really doesn't have much bargaining power if that is truly his stance (unless someone truly does still believe in his potential as a positional prospect). One person I work with told me coming out of high school (in response to me comparing Stock to Joe Mauer three + years ago) that Stock wasn't as good as most people gave him credit for. They felt he had some serious holes in his swing and wasn't as polished defensively as his reputation led many to believe. This is the same person that initially turned me onto Matt Wieters coming out of high school. So, he's two-for-two.
  21. You just name a couple of guys that I wasn't aware of (Paxton/Washington), thanks X. You got all of the ones I was aware of. Rawnsley wrote a story yesterday about the top 10 players that likely will pose some signability trouble (story for subscribers only): http://www.pgcrosschecker.com/articles/DisplayArticle.aspx?article=1417
  22. The only reason James wouldn't be a top 5 round pick is due to the fact that teams haven't been able to get a good look at him this spring. I'm not sure if you saw or heard about it brewerguy71, but Kevin James was throwing almost just as well as Chad James was at last week's PG National Pre-Draft in Cedar Rapids. Chad James is a potential first-round pick, and Kevin James definitely showed his stuff warranted a top 3-5 round pick if teams are comfortable with such a selection. He quickly asserted himself as the top prospect in the state. If he's not taken early he's Boston College bound. Charlie Markson is Notre Dame bound. He won't get taken early enough to sway him away from that commitment and he still has work to do with his bat. As noted, Joel Effertz is next, followed by Chase Graskiewicz. Again, I'm not so sure either gets drafted early enough for them to bypass their college commitments (Arizona and Kansas State respectively). In addition to Dott, Nick Rice at the JC level could be drafted in the top 20-30 rounds out of Madison Tech. Madison Tech (like almost every other year) has a few other guys that could go pro. Sam Munson is an out-of-state JC (Walters State, TN) that also could be drafted in the 15-30 round range (my guess is that he returns for another year, or two - depending on where he goes - of college). Wisconsin is never the greatest state for developing baseball talent, but James' emergence has definitely made it a better year than how it originally stacked up.
  23. I wasn't basing it solely on the box scores, I took into account his results thus far as well as first hand accounts about his velocity and pitches. Gotcha. It seemed as though you just based that comment off of looking at his line from yesterday. As far as what scouts saw in him to make him a second round pick, battlekow answered that part of it already: That may be true, but nobody who's seen Adams pitch this year has been impressed at all by his stuff. In the draft picks thread, you wrote: "[Adams] has touched 96, and sits in the 92-94 range with his fastball." He seems to working in the high 80s this year from all reports. The stuff was there in college, and again, some people I spoke to last summer raved about his arm strength. We heard Frederickson also wasn't throwing 95-98 (more like upper-80s based on the reports we heard) last summer after he was drafted. I'm not sure what he's up to these days, but hopefully these early round college arms can turns things around.
  24. Adams stuff can't be all that electric, I wonder what the scouts saw in him to give him a 2nd round rating? Sorry, this is a pretty big pet peeve of mine. There is absolutely no way you can determine stuff by looking at a box score. I talked to a few scouts last summer at the NWL all-star game about both Adams and Odorizzi (since the scouts at that game were the same ones that covered the entire area), and they both were praised for their pure stuff.
  25. BK, I personally listed Dillard high at # 10, so my cohorts will have to defend themselves on that one. I'm not typically a big fan of defending myself in such a situation, since in doing so I'm going to be taking shots at the player(s) in question. First off, he's 25 years old, soon to be 26. He's been in the system for a while, and has been in the upper levels of the system the past several years. He has been switched from a starter to a reliever and back to a starter now, and isn't doing a very good job missing bats this year. Reid Nichols has noted in the past that his future role is likely in the bullpen because he really only has one pitch, his sinker. He has had plenty of opportunities to get called up to the big leagues and he hasn't been able to stick. I hope he becomes a stalwart in the team's bullpen sooner rather than later, and I do realize that it took Mitch Stetter a few times to finally stick for good. However, Dillard, like Stetter, is probably going to be a non-closing candidate short reliever, and while that has value, such players don't fall in the 10-15 prospect range for me.
