  1. Any lefty relievers out their with high salaries a team would be willing to dump? MLBTR said that Melvin inquired on all good loogies but didn't find a match so I have to believe he will be aggressive finding one in the next couple of weeks. Could Thornton of the White Sox or Breslow from the A's still be a match?
  2. I don't know that it matters if you are playing the Phillies, Braves, or Giants in the first round; they all have crazy good teams (Although I would prefer the Giants, Braves, Phillies in that order). Whats more important, especially considering our home/road splits is to somehow get ahead of the Giants & Braves so we are hosting. I still think with our pitching that we could shut down Atlanta or SF; I am not quite so confident in shutting down the Phils. If I had to choose I would also rather face Lincecum and Cain / Jurrjens and Hanson than Halladay & Lee
  3. Its not like I disagree that Yuni should be replaced if we could(Obviously for a reasonable price); I don't think he is a good player by any stretch. I was just pointing out that Yuni has been reasonably good for the last 2 months and is far from the worst SS offensively. If he was even below average defensively I would probably love the guy. It just seems weird that on a team full of crappy defensive players that he gets singled out so much for his defense. I have been thinking that is might be a toss up between McGehee / Yuni / Fielder as the worst defensive player on the team but obviously Yuni plays the more important defensive position.
  4. The timing of this Yuni hate seems a bit odd. Obviously the guy sucks at defensive but so does virtually everybody else in the starting lineup. Is he really any worse than McGehee, Braun, or Fielder? When I see that we have a SS that has OPS'd 700 in the last 2 months including a 750 in July and 930 since the all star break I feel that we are getting pretty good production from SS.
  5. I am pretty happy with the trading season. Hairston covers a lot of our weaknesses; if/when McGehee/Yuni go back into slumps we at least have someone to step in now. Obviously we also have more coverage in the OF as well. I think Melvin will pick up a waiver wire LHP; I think that is really the only othe major missing piece. I think it is a little crazy to criticize Melvin for not going for it when in the last 10 months he has brought in Marcum, Grienke, Saito, Morgan, K-Rod, among others. I guess I was never in love with Furcal either; Hairston might be much more valuable to the team due to his versality. Yeah the team still has some holes; but so does every other team that has a payroll under $100 Million. I really like our chances going into the final 2 months. Obviously the the other 3 likely playoff teams will be awfully tough; but you never know what can happen in the playoffs.
  6. Yeah I don't get this at all. RR has a new veteran toy to play with but still feels the need to start Kotsay and Counsell. I am sure he just wants to get these guy some at bats to keep them ready for pinch hit duty; but at some point you just have to say enough is enough (Counsell especially) That being said, the Astros lineup is just brutal and I am still pretty confident about the game EDIT: If there was ever a time to throw this lineup out there and still get a W it is against the Stros. Maybe that was RR's logic
  7. I probably would prefer that RR gets excited about him at 3rd
  8. You have a point there. Wil Inman anyone? The guys the Astros got are in low A and are only putting up OK numbers; it doesn't seem like they are lock by any means and certainly won't help the Astros any sooner than maybe late 2012 early 2013
  9. I think Wilson is going to be the one to go. Counsell, Wilson, and Hairston are all somewhat repetitive with Hairston being the best; to me it comes down to Wilson or COunsell and I just don't see Melvin giving Craig the ax
  10. Even if he isn't starting on most nights at least we now have a competent bench player
  11. Hairston seems like a really solid pick up to me. Versatile and can still hit
  12. The way Yuni is hitting right now I am just not sure that Doug is going to pull the trigger on anyone. Sure if Yuni keeps this up the next 2 months everyone will be pretty happy but that is taking a pretty big risk. McGehee is probably doing just enough to keep his job too.
  13. Yeah I still would pick to Sox. If the Brewers had to play the Phils in the opening round we probably at least have a fighting chance but no one in their right mind would pick us to win the series.
  14. So how does Morton somehow have a WHIP above 1.5 and an ERA under 4.0? Like has been said before; the entire Pirates pitching staff is the Anti-Greinke
  15. Pirates down early against Halladay; I don't think they are coming back Probably too much to ask for the Cubs to win a game or two; never know though
  16. I really don't think he's likely acting in the best interest of the club because a. he has a poor track record in recent years regarding his decisions, and b. he knows his job is on the line this year so doesn't care about mortgaging a future he won't be a part of unless he wins this season. I don't see why the team can't make the playoffs next year with the additions of Gamel, Green, the allocation of Prince's salary toward bullpen and depth, and all of the remaining talent on the team. Plus, keeping the farm respectable will help us recover quicker after that. So we shouldn't have an "all-in" mentality. We should be buyers, but in terms of spending money, not young talent on the cheap. How does a small market franchise win without young talent on the cheap? The young talent, accumulated by Jack Z., is the primary reason we are in contention in the first place.I might have missed something but how exactly has Melvin mortgaged the future? We have everyone but Prince back next year. He is obviously in a win now position but I don't think it is fair to say he sacrificed any chance of future success just to save his job. There are plteny of different scenarios I can think up that keep the Brewers as contendors in the next 3-5 years. Maybe not World Series contendors but certainly playoff worthy. Besides I think Melvin has a ton of job security; regarless of what happens this year he is not going anywhere IMO
  17. Holy crap; the Astros are 35 games under .500? I didn't realize they were that bad.
  18. You really think Doug Melvin is not doing what is in the best interest of the club? We have no idea what goes on behind closed doors yet we have a better idea what is in the best interest of the club than Melvin does? Don't get me wrong I am confused as anyone about the Green situation but its not like I think Mevlin is trying to sabotage the club or something. He and RR feel they have a good reason for not bringing him up and maybe they aren't being completely upfront and honest with the media about the situation. Who cares, that kind of misleading mumbo jumbo happens all the time. Why would Melvin & Co come out and say why exactly they won't bring Green up? Probably because they feel he has certain faults. Now would they want to advertise those faults when you are the trading deadline? Probably not.
  19. This injury makes me about 95% sure that Doug is going to pick up some infield help; it just a matter of who it is. Melvin has never cared about defense before so it is peculiar that they would take the defensive guy over the offensive guy. I still find it hard to beleive that Melvin wouldn't consider Green a top prospect (In the context of the PTBNL discussions) Green is probably the best guy we have at 2nd or 3rd. That being said even the Power 50 guys only have him at #17 in a pretty weak farm system; perhaps he is just a AAAA guy (although you have to give him a shot to find out) The Brewers have not been scoring a lot of runs lately; the pitching better continue to be stellar. I don't know how you can make up the lineup now; either McGehee just bumps up to 5th or Hart moves back down (Which means someone like Counsell/Farris or maybe Lucroy has to hit 2nd
  20. I think you are being a little harsh on Doug; he has been one of if not the most aggressive GM in all of baseball the last 3-4 years. He has made a ton of moves that have improved the team. Besides I am sure he is relying pretty heavily on his MILB scouts and if they were recommending him to be up here I imagine Doug would have him up. Or if they were OK letting him go via PTBNL then they obviously don't like something there seeing. If their is any criticism on Doug is that he builds his teams pretty top heavy. His strategy is obviously get as many great players as possible rather than fill the roster out with merely good players. Obviously you have to pay the great players which leaves the cash only to get average or even poor to fill out the roster I would love Green to be up to; but I don't think it is any indictment on Doug that hes not.
  21. I was very nervous there for a while; but Grienke has definitely turned me around. I was very skeptical of him at first but I will happily eat crow if he keeps this up Just wish he could get some more outs early in the counts so he can ruitinely get deeper into games
  22. I hope we can get him back for September
  23. I would love Barmes if Weeks is going to be out for an extended period of time Based on how that looked; an optimistic timeline is probably 15 days
  24. Pirates and Reds already lost, might as well make it the trifecta with the Cards; at least that would make me feel a little bit better about the Weeks injury I had a ton of basketball related ankle sprains; the easiest are maybe a couple days; the worst can be a month or more. Hopefully no achilles or anything like that. At the very least I hope Farris and Green can tread water long enough until Melvin can either make a trade or until Weeks gets back
