  1. Probably the only reason they are keeping Gamel around now is because he is cheap; I have my doubts that they would keep Gamel, all else remaining equal, if they actually had to pay him (I.E. if he had been arby eligible this year he might have gotten non tendered) I also don't see how Gamel is going to get any sort of significant raise in arby next year anyways; his career has been mediocre at best, poor at worst. I have always been kind of indifferent towards Swisher and would have no interest in paying him $14 Million a year. I suppose many other teams probably think the same about Hart; he has never been a star but puts up pretty consistent numbers.
  2. People obviously understand that winter weather can cause problems in a variety of ways; but that doesn't mean they can't get excited about what they feel are the good parts of the storm I.E. playing outside with the kids, snow days, beauty of it, etc. I don't think that means they are just insensitive to the problems it may be causing for others.
  3. They will be better next year; but not worlds better. They will probably win 70-75 games; but not getting to play Houston for 16 games will hurt. I wouldn't be suprised if they beat out PIT; PIT's talent level still isn't all that high IMO outside of Cutch. There won't be any truly terrible teams in the division next year; so I am not expecting anyone in the division to put up some huge win total aided by beating up on the likes of HOU or CHI of 2012. It should be a pretty balanced division.
  4. This is going to be a boom or bust pick up for them. Best case is probably like a 3.5 ERA type pitcher; worst case is probably really really bad and a complete waste of $14 Million. The K/9 is pretty nice but that walk rate is horrendous; his reputation still seems to be bloated due to the fantastic 2006. He has been pretty mediocre if slightly above average since. I guess $7 Million a year probably buys league average nowadays.
  5. Schools only have a limited number of snow days before they need to stay longer in June. They are probably playing with fire taking a day that perhaps they don't need to in December. That being said it looks like a lot of the leftover wet snow froze to the roads this morning so I can see why some rural towns might have to delay or cancel school today
  6. Can someone please explain to me why several schools around FDL county have already cancelled classes for tomorrow? The snow is going to be done well before buses go out and you would think the plows would hit even the rural roads in the next 10 hours. Doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me.
  7. NWS only has FDL at about 8 inches so far which is quite a bit below projected. However I am not complaining because the weight of this snow is just awful. Darn near gave myself a heart attack
  8. I'll take him as a solid member of the bullpen. Can't imagine the $ is to outrageous. Not really a loogy which fits in with RR's style. Had a pretty solid year last year.
  9. It looks like there is a very heavy band over Madison right now; I can only assume this will be in my area within a couple of hours. Please let it be in time that management decides to let us go home at lunch.
  10. This is some of the wettest snow I can remember. Today's is probably a grade school's kids dream. I would have built a pretty sweet fort back in the day. I think my house has about 5-6 inches so far; nothing all that bad yet. Not really windy at all. It was pretty awesome using my snow blower for the first time this morning. It would have taken me a long time to shovel out of the 3 foot drift the snow plows left at the base of my driveway this morning.
  11. As of a 7 PM update; the NWS has Madison at 18 inches and FDL at 16. Even if there is more rain than expected and totals come in less it still looks like totals will be substantial
  12. My mother in law just called and said she is giving me my Christmas present early; a snow blower. Needless to say I am thrilled with probably atleast 12 inches of wet snow waiting for me tomorrow night. I have an awesome mother in law.
  13. Don't know much about him at all other than he would have beaten UW this year if he had a kicker. Its always tough to judge to the guys coming from mid majors but it doesn't sound like a horrible hire. Perhaps I was expecting a little more name recognitition; I was probably overvaling the UW job.
  14. Is that some kind of joke? 15 inches in Fond du Lac. I like snow put man that shoveling after work on Thursday will be brutal. If the 15 inches actually happens; I have to imagine it will be one of the larger snow events going back a while.
  15. Sweet I love me a snow storm. Being in FDL I am probably right in the cross hairs right now. Still don't own a snowblower though.
  16. I am not advocating signing or trading for someone just because; they obviously have to be worth it. I am not even all that worried about the starters; it is filling out the 7th and 8th inning with guys that DM and RR didn't feel were good enough to make the rotation that scares me. Badenhop, Axford, and Henderson alone is a horrible bullpen and then we are adding rotation cast offs to that; no thank you. Thankfully we do have some flamethrowers that could make a difference; doesn't mean I am not going to be scared until they show they can actually get MLB hitters out.
  17. All that I can say at the moment is that I am clearly not comfortable relying on the people we have now to complete the rotation and the bullpen. It is an absolute recipe for disaster to count on so many young players. Even if they get no starting pitching help; I do not want the leftovers left to fill out important spots in the bullpen.
  18. Some people are real sick. Shooting an entire kindegarten class who are completely defenseless. Sometimes I like to think there is some kind of Super Hell reserved for people like that. Ordinary Hell just isn't bad enough. As a father of young children the episode that happened today just scares the crap out of me.
  19. I would say it is a pretty strong conference with the addition of Butler and Xavier Marquette Villanova Georgetown DePaul Seton Hall Providence St Johns Xavier Butler Georgetown is probably the cream of the crop at the moment but there are 4 teams that have struggled in recent years as well (DePaul, Providence, Seton Hall, St Johns). Still this is a better league than if these schools just stayed put. I am curious what they are going to call themselves.
  20. Unless we plan on signing Lohse (Please God no) it certainly appears that it is the trade market or nothing for the Brewers this offseason. Melvin is saying basically everyone is priced out of our budget right now despite the fact that even conservative estimates have the Brewers with about $15 Million to spend. Not that going the trade route is a bad thing but the complete lack of activity up to this point has been pretty frustrating especially when the bullpen issues are still staring us in the face. And I don't want Estrada as our #2; that just has disaster written all over it. We need someone, anyone, that is a legitimate 2/3 starter in this league. Only way to do it now is by trade.
  21. Its not like they are completely devoid of athletes. Bergrenn isn't some plodding big man; he could run if you asked him. UW could definitely get up and down if they wanted to; but they don't have the PG play to pull it off at the moment. Maybe if they had Gasser. UW might be a little down this year; but the have enough talent that they can rise again pretty quickly next year. They will need to find some big men but there G and F positions should be pretty strong with a year of experience under the belts plus the addition of Gasser. Weird that Kaminsky has been basically non existent next year; I thought he would be next in line for the next good UW big man.
  22. That will be a very solid BBALL conference assuming they can add atleast Xavier and perhaps St Joes, Creighton, St Louis, and Butler or some combination of those schools. The Big East in all sports will officially be dead. Absolutely no reason for the remaining Big east football schools like Uconn to stick around; nothing worth staying for anymore
  23. They are not even rumored to be completely done yet. When you bring in $240 Million a year from local TV money alone there payroll still as plenty of room to grow. On an unrelated note how on earth can any company afford to pay $240 Million annually for TV rights? I know the LA market is huge but jeepers how can they make any money at all out of this deal?
  24. Word is that Peterson is in for an interview early this week. Back up the truck.
  25. Biggest problem with UW is at the PG position. When was the last time they didn't have a solid veteran player at that position? This team has a lot of long term potential with at present there are a lot of holes. Evans has had a poor senior year; Berggrenn got man handled by Marquette. They still haven't beaten a good team yet this year; the tourney might be hard to come by as I can't see them beating the likes of Michigan, Ohio State, Indiana, or Michigan State. They don't have a good win yet so unless they pull a couple upsets and beat the teams they are suppose to I can see them on the outside looking in.
