  1. According to Ken Roshenthal, the Brewers are not interested in pursuing Pedro.
  2. The fact that JJ is 26 and one year away from his magical year of 27 (I think that's a player's best year statistically), and that Alcides is thought to be a year away from coming up bothers me in terms of imperfect timing. I can imagine the Crew trading JJ in the offseason and him going somewhere else. I like JJ. I don't think he's irreplaceable, but I like that he can flash occasional power, but generally be a consistent hitter and have decent d. I'd like to see him around a few more years. But at some point, I think the Brewers have to make decisions about what players to build around, and I think given their payroll constraints, they are going to have to concentrate on keeping Braun (achieved for the most part I guess), Gallardo, and maybe another player. I don't suspect that JJ is a must-have for the future. I like him a lot, but he's a player you can trade, and Escobar seems promising.
  3. I can't see this happening. Olney mentions Nady or Swisher as chips but I think if Melvin was high on either of those two, we would have heard rumors about Cameron again. In any case, we have more OF options than 3B options right now, so it wouldn't be position-need trade for the Brewers. So, Melvin would have to ship Bill Hall just to ship him. But I can't see Melvin shipping Bill Hall just to ship him. McGehee and Lamb together are not a solid enough of a 3B platoon to risk shipping Hall, who, though he has problems as of late, is still a better option than either of those two. The Yankees low-balling habits don't seem to play well with Melvin.
  4. I understand the benefits of not going to arby, but I wonder if it gets to a point that it allows the players' agents to take advantage of you a little bit. You could almost hedge by asking for a little more than you normally would, knowing Melvin will meet you half way. Of course, I'm assuming that the club always offers the figures before the players do, and that you can never ask for an exorbitant amount knowing that the team could call your bluff and ensuring you'd lose in the arbitration hearing. I'm glad for the lack of drama, but I'm still annoyed with Hart for how much he sucked at the end of last season.
  5. There's a rumor on www.mlbtraderumors.com that the Cubs have targeted Milton Bradley as a FA signing and that MB is amenable to signing with the Cubs. What are your takes on this? I know he can be a huge clubhouse distraction, but he was great with Texas last year. I did notice that he has lost a lot of playing time, but I'm not sure if that was due to suspensions or injuries. His numbers are very good. The Cubs were already favorites in the division, we are going to be weaker, and this is only going to help the Cubs.
  6. I had heard that the Giants or somebody had inquired about Hardy, but that Melvin quickly said he was unavailable. I figured it might be Melvin posturing. I guess this means that the Giants took Melvin at his word. How do we get Matt Cain now?
  7. Assuming that Sheets and CC are picked up by teams that would give up a first rounder, I supposed it's not that big a deal. But I don't like the idea of the Cubs getting our first rounder. Yuck. 10-13M per year for Wood is a lot to pay a closer with an injury history.
  8. The Dominican Republic had a team ERA of 2.57 in the 2006 World Baseball Classic when Bill Castro was their pitching coach. I know ERA is nothing to judge a team by, and that 7 games is a small sample size, but it's a nice fact to look at if you already like the guy and want to be optimistic while wishing him success. So, congratulations Bill Castro! And here's hoping the Crew has a team ERA of 2.57 in 2009! I joke of course. But I will take that 2.57 ERA in the 2009 World Series, which would be better than the 2.86 team ERA for the Phillies in the World Series this year.
  9. I too took solace in knowing that we got knocked out by the team that won it all. Though, in truth, I don't think we were well situated for the playoffs with Sheets out and a suckitude virus going around the clubhouse. I was happy for Jenkins. When he left Milwaukee, he did so with class and made a point of telling the city and the fanbase that they meant a lot to him. Maybe that was pure PR, but it was up and beyond what was needed. I'm sure if he had his druthers, he would have won that World Series with Milwaukee, but given the chances that any ball player will be on a World Championship team, I had to feel good for him. I had some schadenfreude with Balfour giving up that run. Not that I wish anything bad for him (why blame him for our team's impatience), but it was nice to know we traded away a human, instead of a super-awesome pitching machine. I don't remember off hand what the Phillies gave up for Lidge, but I'm suddenly wishing we would have done that.
  10. How about: "2008 NL West Champion Exceeder (Regular Season)" People really only focus on the word "Champion" and the year. Or: "Contributors to 2008 AL Champions (Gross and Balfour)"
  11. Tampa has been incredible to watch. I'm kind of annoyed with how they went from worst to first since it means that they got to stockpile all those high draft picks right before they exploded onto the state of baseball excellence. I guess I'm just jealous that they can do so much with a small market, low payroll team while the Crew has scratched and clawed its way to a wild card and got knocked out of the first round. (I'm also jealous that they did something with Balfour and we didn't). I'm rooting for them over Boston. I've been enjoying Philly/LA because I have no clear favorite there. Part of me would like to see the Dodgers go to the WS while the Yankees enjoy some nice October golf. The Yankee brass then has to wonder if they were a little harsh letting Torre go. I'm not a huge Philly fan, but they've done their time suffering and it would be nice to have gotten knocked out by the champions. I just really dislike some of their players (Myers and Werth mainly. Myers for the wife beating and Werth...nothing rational of my dislike there.) edited out long quote--pitchleague
  12. Blasphemy. Bush proved himself to be a big game pitcher. Therefore he is worth Suppan money at a Suppan like deal, proposed to him at Mark A's house.
  13. Number 1 is completely correct. Number 2 are the fans who sell their tickets to Cubs fans. Bill Hall definitely, and then I'd say Weeks. Hart was bad, but I think the reaction there is the taste that is left in our mouths because he ended the season playing so poorly. Weeks may have been average, but that's not good enough. Besides, I think his defense is a downside. Use him as a trading chip, or move him to CF. I'm concerned about catcher though. What will happen next year? Kendall full time again? Please let it be that they bring up one of the young guys and develop him, or else give Rivera more time. However, while I bet Melvin at least looks to upgrade 3B and upgrade or augment 2B, I think we're screwed at catcher. I'm betting that they promoted Kendal to special Catcher-GM where he gets to make all the decisions about catchers for the whole team. They sure like to give him a lot to do.
  14. You are not alone. I read that whole article and then instantly regretted it. Here are the article's Pros in my view: 1) It is about the Brewers at a time when there is relatively little news about the Brewers. 2) It is about the Brewers and it was published during the work day when I am bored to death. 3) The vague reference to players performance makes me think of the possibilites of next year. Here are the article's Cons in my view: 1) It was written by the Journal-Sentinel staff 2) It lacks any objective metrics 3) It has no predictive power save for my expectations of the quality of Hardicourt's next article.
  15. I think that Boras would still demand a pretty penny for Gagne and he's not worth it if you're talking about bringing him back with a negotiated contract. He did pitch better in the second half and down the stretch, but he's been erratic and inconsistent for the last two years. The price that Boras would demand for him would be risky. If you offer him arbitration, maybe he's worth it then. I think that Boras would advise to turn down the arby and try the free market where some team might gamble on his seeming second half resurgence.
  16. Rays are a good story, but I'm annoyed by the fact that suddenly - after an entire existence of futility - they're an insta-contender. Just jealous of that. I like the Dodgers going far just because I love how the Yankees brass must be taking it. They don't make the playoffs, while Joe Torre goes all the way.
  17. This kind of sums it up for me. Part of me could root for the Cubs since I admire the team. I have a lot of friends who are Cubs fans. But the several who found it in their hearts to instigate (thwarted) kerfuffles with me last weekend sort of sour me on the whole idea of the Cubs winning it all. Since one guy told me the Brewers were the most irrelevant team in sports, I decided I hated them all the more. So, 1)Brewers 2)Dodgers (just because it would mean they beat the Cubs) 3) Phillies (see above) 4) White Sox (I don't have a great fondness, but my grandpa was a Sox fan) 5)Rays 6)Angels 7)Red Sox 8) Cubs. I won't leave them off the list entirely. I'll tell myself that if they do do it, maybe their fanbase will be less annoying (I doubt it though, but I can dream, just I dream of 1) above)
  18. No way do I offer him a multi year deal. I think it's safe to say he is injury prone by now. You can say that X% of the injuries were flukes, but after enough stints on the DL, I think the type of injury becomes insignificant. It becomes harder and harder to insure the guy against loss of services based on loss of service time alone. The best case scenario is to offer him arby and hope somebody else signs him. He won't be ready by opening day next year I'm guessing, so any contract is not going to have a good return on investment if it is short term (< 3 years). Second best case secnario is he accepts arby, nobody signs him and he heals fairly quickly. Then we have a good pitcher for a year to help compete next year, or else we have somebody to trade at the deadline. I think any signing over a year is just a risky move. Even if you're still thinking in terms of trade bait, you're still exposed to a great amount of risk there based on the injury, and the history of injuries. All of course in my humble opinion.
  19. Realistically, the '87 Twins and the '06 Cardinals shouldn't have been champions if total number of wins, and a September record were indicators of realism. So, the only realism I can subscribe to right now is a dash of hope, a couple handfuls of joyful exhuberance tempered with living in the moment and trying not to expect too, too much.
  20. get yourself a brewers license plate holder...problem solved! http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif I have a Brewers bumper sticker. Somehow people just don't notice it.
  21. Saturday night I narrowly avoided two kerfuffles with Cubs fans. But Sunday morning I encountered some really kind, well wishing ones. There were a few jerks on the way out of the park who were mock-chanting "Whooo, Wild Card! Wild Card! Whooo!" But there were a lot of Brewer fans being jerks too. My car has IL plates on it and people were giving me guff, even though I was bedecked in Brewer gear. So basically, it's the same story as always: The nice fans you don't notice as much because they are nice and are not yelling in your face. You notice the obnoxious ones, and they weigh more in your memory, because they assaulted your senses more.
  22. As luck would have it, I'm at all three games this weekend starting tonight. I kind of wish I wasn't going. I'm not optimistic about our chances at the WC. Cubs are tougher than the Marlins by far, and I think Braun's homer last night was a fluke, given how much he's been hurting. If the Crew somehow pulls it off, I'll be glad I'm there, but I'm not expecting anything.
  23. This is where it almost gets dangerous though. Suppose DM thinks, "Wow, he really wants Suppan! Suppan is OK, but in my own mind, I think it's not the best route to take. Do I stand my ground here? I suppose we could do worse than Suppan." I guess we don't really know. DM is overall pretty classy, that much is for sure. He's not going to shirk his responsibilities, so we're never really going to know who had whose hand in what.
  24. In the Doug Melvin thread there was a lot discussion about whether or not Melvin was completely responsible for all the decisions he made that seem to have been less than successful. In some of those cases, it does seem as if Attanasio may have been had a little bit of influence. Ken Rosenthal suggested that Melvin, if he's smart, may think about resisting an extension with the team since it's not like he gets as free a hand as a GM might like. I have to admit I wonder if Attanasio isn't meddling a little bit more than most owners do. I hope he doesn't turn out to be a dud owner. I look at our 26 going on 27 years of playoff drought, and I seethe with burning disgust with what Selig subjected Brewers fans to. I hope that Attanasio isn't as meddling as it seems. You scream for a new manager, a new GM, even new ushers, but when you get a dud owner, you sort of have to resign yourself to your fate. And this stretch of fate has gone on too long for Brewers fans.
  25. Touche. But at the same time, the Pirates were just willing to deal Torres. Mota was a crapshoot and on average has been OK, but it's not he was a pleasant surprise like Kolb or Turnbow when they first came in (I realize we got them off waivers). I'm thinking more like the retrospective steals like Villanueva, Capuano, Overbay, Carlos Lee, etc. But I take your point. I admit that my statement was a bit emotionally tainted. I'm not riding high on DM right now.
