  1. I can tell from each of your avatars that you two know what you're talking about when it comes to hockey ( http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif ), but really? For a playoff game I can wait and walk up an hour before gametime and get tickets nearly as good as ordering three days early?
  2. Need advice for buying tickets to Saturday's game. I jumped on ticketmaster tonight to grab two $16 seats and was utterly dismayed by the $18+ in special charges I'd incur to order the tickets. $50 for two $16 tickets -- while not a total surprise when it comes to ticketbastard -- is completely ridiculous. If I call the Ads ticket office will they hook me up sans insane charges?
  3. Weeks, will you ever stop sucking at basic baseball skills?
  4. Announcers who use the phrase "a year ago" to refer to the entire previous season. "This kid had 22 homers a year ago." Really? 22 home runs by April 28th, 2008? That's amazing.
  5. I vote no new jerseys because I am cheap. $47.50 to play softball is enough outlay for this cat.
  6. Can't do tomorrow. (Isn't it supposed to rain tomorrow anyways?) Guess I'll see y'all at the next one....
  7. So are they going to make an entire season out of this pit/park thing? On top of the other faults mentioned above, the plots just suck. No side stories, no variety. I think everything so far would make up about 1 episode of the Office, and there'd be other story arcs explored in the mean time....
  8. I'll be there, probably a little late. (~10:45 or so)
  9. Friday here, not Saturday or Sunday. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/frown.gif
  10. Despite the nebulous topic title, the "The Nationals: Could this team be any worse" thread on Page 1 is already dedicated to this very subject. (http://forum.brewerfan.net/viewtopic.php?t=18361) EDIT: I suppose that thread is a little broader than just the Dukes story, but it is in the lead post. EDIT 2 (by 1992casey) Fixed link.
  11. Without a car, how will you tailgate?? You can't come to Milwaukee and Miller Park for the first time and not tailgate with the thousands of other fans!
  12. We need a graph. Major league experience along the X axis, PH batting average along the Y. Or maybe difference between career non-PH and PH batting average along the Y. I don't think it's an unreasonable theory that rookies or guys with limited experience in the big leagues might make worse pinch hitters than their mediocre veteran counterparts. Say with regular playing time McGehee and Lamb are both .250 hitters. I could say with certainty that if it's late in the game and we need a base hit, I'd much rather have the guy with 3,000 plate appearances step in there than the guy with 30. By a long shot. Wouldn't everyone here agree? But pinch hitting isn't the only reason you keep a guy on the roster. McGehee clearly has more upside and even has the ability to "break out" should he be called upon due to an injured or struggling Bill Hall. Defense enters in. Salary. I'm sure some other factors I'm not thinking of. I like that this thread brought up a different way to look at it, though....
  13. Now? Or over 40 years? Historically, I believe the market's long-term performance has been about ~11.5%. Growth stock mutual funds should average +10% over 40 years. True, there's always a chance that in any year, maybe even year 39, the market dips down like we're seeing right now so your balance isn't anywhere near $1.5 million. But that's fine as long as you don't panic and cash out anything to lock in the losses. In the year or two that follows should be the full recovery, probably plus more. (By the same token, the market might be UP in year 39, putting you above that $1.5 million figure, just when you're ready to cash out some of it! Score.) FWIW, interesting and informative material on the subject of investing: http://a1611.g.akamai.net...m_of_great_investors.pdf . Lots of charts and pictures, almost like a PowerPoint; easy read.
  14. Pay the house off in cash as long as it leaves you with an emergency fund of ~6 months' expenses. Look at it this way, say you take out a mortgage for 50% and pay it off. Once it's paid off, would you borrow against your house to get the cash back so you could do something like invest it? It's virtually the same question. Most people would never borrow against their paid-for house to play some money game and try to eek out an extra couple % hoping everything goes right....
  15. The Dukes stuff in the article sounds pretty one-sided. I wouldn't be surprised if in actuality there was ample time to go from charity work to the ballpark but Dukes horsed around and ended up being late. I also wouldn't be surprised if in actuality it was more than 5 minutes. Maybe he did some charity work, played some video games, stopped at an Arby's, and strolled in 15 minutes late. I could see that, and I could see a sports writer spinning that into something like this just to make a story, too. The "Natinals" thing is pretty funny. And those statues look like a horror movie -- just terrible.
  16. Should be there.
  17. $250 per month ($3,000 per year) invested in solid mutual funds yielding 10% for 40 years will be worth a lot more than $120,000 or $200,000. Try $1.5 million. Hope you like the car! Spending money on new cars, or anything requiring car payments really, is pretty much a fantastic waste of wealth-building opportunity. Unless, y'know, you just didn't want to be a debtor anymore. "The borrower is slave to the lender." That's a great rate, but even if your interest rate was 0.00% I wouldn't call it nuts to pay it off early. There's a lot to be said for paying back what you owe in an accelerated fashion. It's a great feeling to know you've fulfilled your obligation. There's great convenience in getting one more distraction out of your life and out of the way of your wealth-building plan. There's a security in eliminating the risk that comes with someone else having claim to your money. I know I have no interest in keeping my student loan around for 10-15 years like it's a pet or something -- as fast as I can get it gone, it's history!
  18. Hasn't it been two and a half years?
  19. Ha, I was going to suggest Airplane! in a half serious/ half joking way.
  20. Sunday's game was ugly, but it was something of a perfect storm for Suppan -- facing a deadly lineup with an umpire that has a microscopic strikezone. Supp hit some great spots down in the zone and on the black, but for this particular outing they were not called strikes. As has been mentioned, Suppan's "stuff" pretty much stinks, so it became pick your poison between walking guys with close pitches or serving up very hittable pitches against a lineup where even the weakest links (Theriot, Fontenot) are raking so far this year. I'm not giving him a total pass, because it's certainly a problem if your "stuff" stinks, but had this been against the Pirates with a different ump this last outing might've been 7 IP, 1 BB, 0 ER. True, Dempster had the same ump to work with, but as I watched the game it sure seemed like he got calls Supp didn't and/or the Brewers hitters were less patient at laying off the close ones. I want to join the hate parade on Suppan, but I'm holding back for now....
  21. Seeing it in person yesterday, I have to say I was much less bothered by what they did than I expected. I pictured something prominently displayed up around the top perimeter where the '82 pennant has always been. The addition of three smaller flags, subtly placed much lower beyond left field actually looked pretty good. I still don't like the blatant reminder that the Brewers were irrelevant for 27 years, and it still seems like we're advertising that fact when we should be hiding it, but oh well....
  22. His one bad month was right out of the gate in April? Easily his worst stretch was about a month-long period of time late in the season, wasn't it? When he went about 23 games hitting .150-ish with zero or one extra base hits. Any fan comments made at any point of 2008 about Prince being overweight were accurate and not an overreaction. And why do all your posts of disagreement require putting "OMG" in someone's mouth? It's unfair and obnoxious.
  23. Great band, you just inspired me to put on Somewhere Out in Space this morning, my man. "Shine on, Rising Star! Forever light the darkness in our hearts!" Speedy melodic German power metal doesn't get much better. Gamma Ray and Helloween FTW.
  24. I was looking forward to "free parking for all fans" day, I've got family in town that weekend!
  25. I'm seriously thinking about withdrawing from the team after reading BF.net's new 2009 Rules of Conduct. The no-Vent-Thread policy has taken joyless sissy elitism to a whole new level; part of me doesn't even want to wear "Brewerfan.net" on my shirt and play for them.
