  1. you will never leave the house, now will you.
  2. Too soon Dave Kryznal would be in better taste
  3. Very nice -- Can you take a picture of the 77 Topps Scott item - that is my favorite baseball card ever -- where did you get that? I assume the T206 is Newt Randall, and the Goudy is Frank O'Rourke.
  4. He's out of options, but given his high salary, nobody would claim him and he'd be foolish to declare free agency. As Casey points out -- Hall could refuse his assignment and tell the Brewers to pound sand.
  5. I think you send down Parra because you think it helps Parra, not because you think Dillard is the 'answer'. Very nicely put. I agree that we don't have an obvious option to perform better.
  6. I don't know if that leg kick was strictly for the HR contest -- but I would imagine it would make him susceptible to off-speed pitching. He is a catcher.
  7. Losing McClung in the pen also hurts since he's been good out there and probably couldn't go deep into a game as a starter putting more stress on the pen Agreed -- plus I am not sure if Parra would be effective out of the BP. I think if Manny needed to miss a start -- McClung makes sense as a spot starter -- but long term McClung seems pretty sweaty to me. I tend to think looking at a trade may be pretty prudent.
  8. I don't necessarily agree doing nothing is a reasonable option at this point, though. I think it is, Ennder does point out that the WPs that he threw should probably have been caught -- and I agree with that -- I guess I am trusting that Macha has his finger on the pulse of the situation -- if Parra can't locate pitches -- then he shouldn't be pitching in MLB, if Parra just had a really bad start but can rebound, then he should get more starts. Personally, assuming he is 100% healthy, I would let him start at least 2 more times, and then perhaps find a suitable replacement -- part of the strategy of "doing nothing" is that I am not convinced we have a better option ready to go in Nash.
  9. This is a big reason why mediocre managers often have clearly defined roles for every reliever and stick to them despite the particulars of a given situation. If it doesn't work out, he can always shrug in postgame and say, "We had our guy in there". I think it is more than the managers -- I am sure DM and MA are loving the atmosphere, the merch sales, and everything that goes with Hells Bells being played in the bottom of the 9th. You can't play Hells Bells in the middle of the 7th inning. I certainly agree with most if not all of Logan's BP theories -- however, I think part of how you pay for a guy like Hoffman, is building up the "experience" of having a great closer.
  10. I know people don't want to hear this so I'll back you up with some examples from this season. I think DJ43 was hoping to avoid this sort of discussion -- I guess he was silly for thinking that. All of these guys are young pitchers who have had a good ERA for a full season at some point in their career and are sitting over 5.50 on the season. None of these guys are Manny Parra, and of course we could show all sorts of examples of pitchers that are 26 years old and doing well. I don't mind if they send Parra down to work on things but this isn't some huge abnormal thing to have a young pitcher go through a rough stretch Who said it was abnormal? Happens to multiple guys every season. Obviously. Young players struggle and then teams take some course of action, perhaps they send the player to the minors, perhaps they put the the starter in the BP, they may make a trade, they may keep the player in the rotation, etc., -- meanwhile the fans of said team discuss all of the various options that the team may entertain on message boards much like this. a lot of people gave those after Suppan's bad start and look foolish now. Specifically, who looks foolish regarding Suppan? Until you start showing some numbers of how many people look foolish, I am going to assume that this statement is just hot air. Takes a lot bigger sample than this to judge a player. False. It took 1.2 innings for the world to find out Chris Mabeus sucks. Realistically, teams are not afforded large sample sizes to judge all of their players. The pragmatic fact is that players are going to continue to get playing time based on their results -- some players are going only get 20 ABs, it sucks but teams can also err by giving players more opportunities just to get a larger sample to judge them -- increasing the sample size comes at a risk. I think we all agree Parra is struggling -- no one yet has said "DFA" or "bag of balls", so I think we can discuss what the Brewers should do (doing nothing being one entirely reasonable option) w/o getting into general non-constructive arguments about a perceived panic that does not exist.
  11. Parra is beginning to remind me of Cappy's 2007 season, where if anything could go wrong, it did. I don't get the impression that Parra is just going to "work out of it" -- I wouldn't give him to many more MLB starts though.
  12. I don't think there is any dispute about Fleet Walker being one of the first three. There isn't, his scuffles with Cap Anson are well documented. I had always believed that the other two were William Edward White and Bud Fowler Bud Fowler is definitely another one -- he was the one I couldn't remember -- William White though, I think that the jury is still out on -- I remember SABR did some research, and there were some definite loose ends. Fatter Than Joey could be right about Walker's brother. I am, his brother was his teammate -- I know that for a fact as well.
  13. I think it was Wesley Walker -- I know that is the Jets WR -- but the name Wesley sticks with me. At any rate Fleetwood Walker and his brother were two of the three -- before Cap Anson and others built up the color barrier. I cannot recall the third. I saw a segment regarding this in between Ken Burns making me fall asleep and turning to shows with more nudity, when I was watching the Homerifiic "Baseball" series.
  14. I think Fleetwood Walker had a brother as well.
  15. The Cavs were on the Magic's floor as well -- usually the visiting team gets off the floor ASAP to let the home team celebrate.
  16. Here is a more robust quote... "We just weren't the Reds this series," said second baseman Brandon Phillips, who was 2-for-4 with a fifth-inning solo home run. "They came here ready because they knew we were ready. They saw us coming right behind them. Somebody had to step their game up. It was either going to be them or be us. It was them. They're a good team, but we're better." "It's just sad it happened like this," Phillips said. "We had chances to win the game today. We had chances to win the game the day before. We just didn't come through. Good teams do little things to win. We have to do the small things. Get them over and get them in. They executed. That's why they're in first place." "We just have to learn from this and make sure we don't take it to St. Louis, or it will happen again," Phillips said. I have no problems whatsoever with what Phillips said. If I am a Reds fan, I certainly don't want to hear "The Brewers are better than us". I don't think he is at all dismissive of the fact that the Brewers swept the Reds... at least he isn't calling us a bunch of punks, or sore-winners, and it is not like the thought that the Reds>Brewers is totally insane.
  17. Fleetwood Walker
  18. Murray won a ROY and a HR title with 22 HRs
  19. Bobby Bragan was way later. It's Fred Haney
  20. yep, Haney -- I knew it wasnt Grimm but that was as close as I could get
  21. 2.) Hank Bauer 3.) Charlie Grimm
  22. Thats what I wondered I am sure there are a bunch of dudes with a 1-0 record.
