  1. How do we know that Ned didn't tear into Prince and the other players behind closed doors last night? I don't know why some people so easily dismisses the possibility that Yost says one thing to the public and another to his players in private. Considering how protective Yost is, I find it not only possible but likely.
  2. I don't know why anyone bothers to look for less obvious reasons to blast Yost, when he does stuff like this that has no explanation. There's no way around coming to the conclusion that Yost has no ability to value offensive or defensive worth. I have no doubt that Counsell plays better defense than Branyan at 3B. Yost couldn't possibly believe that makes up for Counsell's atrocious stick, right? I'm asking the wrong question, though. What's really going on here is obvious. Yost actually is valuing Counsell's offensive talents MORE than Branyan's! I bet if questioned, the phrase "good AB" would be muttered about a dozen times by Yost. I still wonder if it's personal. Yost didn't want to play Branyan over Helms during his first go-around with the Crew. I guess we'll never know but it sure smells. It seems like the second Branyan wasn't hitting a bomb every game, he sealed his fate.
  3. As my previous post attempted to explain, as fans, we don't know: A: Whether Yost has certain character traits that cause his players to have less confidence in pressure situations B: If having less confidence has an impact on the players' performance. We can blindly speculate all we want and I'm not trying to stop anyone from doing that. And if this was all just brought up as an interesting observation, I'm all for it. I like trivia as much as the next guy. But if you actually want to find evidence of A. or B., simply looking looking at the Brewer's record in nationally televised games isn't going to get you anywhere. Even if you make all the necessary adjustments for Brewer and opponent strength, starting pitcher, home/away, etc... sure, you'll get an expected record. We'll say that the Brewers' expected record was 12.6 - 15.4 but they really only won 9 games. Now what? You only proved that the Brewers did worse in a small sample than expected. You have no idea why and are forced to assume it was dumb luck. And if anyone thinks I'm wrong, I can use the same methodology to prove that Yost can will his team to play better below the cotton belt, or something else along those lines.
  4. I don't know what you could do, Brian. I don't mean to suggest the mods could or should do anything. I just feel like this place has turned into a sports radio show. Chhose a topic, have a very strong opinion about it but off little or nothing to back it up. +1 points if the topic involves attacking the character of a player or coach. Take any unmoderated sports message board, filter out the personal attacks and vulgar language, and what you have left will look pretty much the same as what we have here., especially thr IGT. Lot's of ridiculously extreme opinions, little intelligent debate. The Brewer are either going to win 20 games in a month or 8. They either have all the confidence in the world or none at all. Hardy is great/sucks/great/sucks. This is not how the real world works, people. And just to be clear, this isn't some rant about needed to statistically prove every comment, or any such nonsense. There are several posters who rarely look past a players season or career stats and can still construst a reasonable argument. I may not agree with them but they at least tok the time to explain WHY they feel the way that they do. How many people even try to formulate an argument, anymore?
  5. Am I really the only one who doesn't care what any manager or coach says to the media. They are only there because they are made to be. They are essentially saying "Blah, blah, balh" just long enough to justify ending the conversation. Actions speak louder than words. Let's just see how the situation is handled.
  6. now i think the big question is does this turn us around or end the season? I'll take option C: No effect.
  7. The entire fight is up now on Brewers.com... So, Parra had a hissy fit and said something stupid to Prince. Prince flips his lid and gets physical.
  8. So, since this fight obviously shows us that he has limited value, we should trade him while his value is high? Am I missing something here?
  9. In your opinion, what would a "good" in game thread look like. I'm not disagreeing with you, I generally respect your opinion (even when I don't agree with it) and would like your take. When I missed a game, I always enjoyed being able to read through the in game thread, along with the play-by-play, to get a sense of the little situations that don't show up well on paper (a long AB ending in a hit, a non-error error, how a pitcher generally looked, etc...). There just doesn't seem much of that now. There just isn't much there anymore. All I seam to learn is who doesn't like what player and whether the Brewers are on a winning or a losing streak. Don't get me wrong, I'm not above a sarcastic one liner but I try to add objective observations about the game as well. Like I said, though, if that's the way people like it, I'm not going to pretend it should change.
  10. Prince isn't going anywhere. Manny probably said something snotty and prince COMPLETELY over reacted. Prince will apologize and maybe sit for a game or two. This will all blow over, like 99% of the things that people assume will spiral out of control.
  11. Okay I just saw the Fielder push. That's a totally weak and Bush league move. I hope Ned suspends his fat ass. Ack, didn't know he pushed someone. He can't be doing that.
  12. I'm sure the whole Prince situation will snowball into prince apologizing and that will be the end of it. Prince is a fiery guy but he doesn't seem to be a straight nob or anything. Actually, at this point, I would be surprised if we DIDN'T get swept. Actually, it's just another silly claim made by you that you wouldn't put a penny on. But hey, it's so bold to make such a claim on a message board!
  13. The idea of starting Kapler fulltime over Cameron is just so silly. Stop being fooled by 125 AB.
  14. Lately, when the Brewers lose, they don't mess around. The last 5 losses (I hope I'm being premature about this one) have been laughers.
  15. It's not Counsell's fault that . Yost is an idiot. Counsell is a great utility player. Yost just doesn't know how to use him.
  16. Counsell is just SUCH a bad hitter that there is no way to justify starting him at 3B unless there is no other option. No way that his good defense makes up for the chasm between his and Branyan's offensive skills. But I'm sure that Yost thinks Counsells gives good ABs, whatever that means.
  17. Brewerfan.net does an excellent job of moderating this board, which puts it ahead of the majority of sports messageboards. I think the quality of the average post around here isn't much different than other baords anymore, though. Most people seem to put very little thought in what they share.. I'm sure that the minor league forum is still an excellent source for information, and I know that the draft coverage is still top notch The in game threads are pretty much junk now, though, and even the major league forum is thin on actual, solid facts. Just a lot of emotionally driven rhetoric. I know, this is what happens when the fanbase increases tenfold in 3 years. And if the majority of people stlike bf.net this way, nothing SHOULD change. I'll have to learn how to conceed gracefully,
  18. I'm sure Tom wants Kapler to start over Cameron. He's like 95% of baseball fans out there. It only takes about 100 AB before they are convinved that a career backup is a whole new player and should start over an established player. After that backup inevitably starts playinglike he always has, they'll conveniently forget it and find a new backup to scream for. But Tom should actually be happy. The reddddddd hottttt Counsell is in there. Nevermind his 100's of crappy ABs. He's seeing the ball really well right now! Honest! And for those who constantly complain about the Brewers offense... How many bad games (less than 3 runs) is a good offense allowed to have and still be good overall? I'm guessing that the answer to that would be in fantasy land. This notion that a consistent offense exists somewhere out there is a figment of your imaginations.
  19. Managers decide who plays (to a certain degree) and has control of in game decisions. Through those two avenues, they can certainly affect winning and losing. All this other stuff proposed around here on a daily basis is just noise, IMO. Can't instill confidence. Killer mentailty. Rising to the occasion ... As if a baseball manager can just will a group of professional athletes to play better with romantic speaches and a stoic demeaner. Makes for a great Disney moment but let's be realistic. That kind of stuff lends itself to something like highschool football the most and professional baseball the least. And even if Yost does have some negative emotional effect on individual performances in certain situations, us fans are in absolutely NO position to even know. Speculation and cherry picked anecdotal evidence is al I ever see. It's a big waste of time, IMO. And this comes from a guy who has a very low opinion of Yost. I just don't need engage in a bunch of amateur psycho babble to justify that opinion.
  20. It's a neat way to look at it but I don't think it really adds much clarity to the situation. I think you are right to say that the Brewers have the easier remaining schedule but what is the actual net expected advantage over the Cubs? Let's just look at the aggregate opponent win% from the remaining schedule of each team: Brewers: .476 Cubs: .496 Basically, the Brewers should win about 1 game more than their simple "on pace for" would suggest. Simulating the remaining schedule for each team, I get 91 wins for the Brewers and 97 wins for the Cubs. Brewers finish with more wins than the Cubs about 10% of the time and finish tied with them about 4% of the time. My very simple simulation agrees pretty well with baseballprospectus. As we've seen twice since the all star break, things can change quickly. Right now, though, the wild card race looks to be the much easier avenue to the playoffs.
  21. There's no excuse that they shouldn't at least be around the middle of the pack hitting with RISP. If you are going to use BA as the measure with RISP, you shouldn't necessarily expect them to be middle of the pack. They sit at 11th overall overall in BA. And if I have to vent about something, it's that the Journal-Sentinal published a letter from someone accusing Sheets of having a big ego. Ben? HUH!?
  22. Whole teams under and over perform every year and that can be completely independent of their players' overall numbers. A player can be known for having a knack for getting that big hit when his team needs him one year and be the goat the next. It should be obvious that at least some luck is involved. Nothing wrong with that. Luck makes sports exciting.
  23. The ones like Sheets that dominate 3/4 of the time are solid #2 starters. I could use a lot of statistics to refute that label but it really isn't necessary. We'll let the market decide this off season if Sheets is a #2 pitcher.
  24. If I have to wait two months to know if a game was a statement game, I guess I don't even know what a statement game is. The series against the Cardinals propelled the Brewers into a playoff position. The Cubs series gave them the opportunity to directly play for a better playoff position.
