  1. Maybe people are looking for a simple explanation for something that is very complex and not easily figured out? To think it's the same thing for every player (coaching staff, for instance) is just to convenient to be true. All I know is, in a couple of months, Braun, Hardy, Fielder, Weeks, Fielder and Hart will probably all have better OPS's, so sample size IS at least part of the explanation.
  2. First off....strike outs are bad in any batting position, however, putting the ball in play is crucial to moving the runner over from 1st. A #2 hitter who puts a lot of balls in play is also probably going to hit into a lot of double plays, so I don't really see why it matters. I'd rather have a #2 hitters who's going to make the least amount of outs of any kind. I'm not sure if Cameron is the guy to do it but his strike out rate is irrelevant to me.
  3. When I read the thread title, I thought Melvin had lost his mind. I think people are right to say that Melvin wants to keep Bush stretched out, however. Makes sense, although it's a shame that Turnbow and McClung will be logging major league innings and Bush won't. That just isn't right. McClung pitched 7 2/3 innings before today, I'm sorry but you can't really formulate an opinion on him either way. Fans do it all the time, then act surprised when they go back, to pitching like they always have. Heck, Yost does it all the time as well. Stetter was supposed to be a LOOGY but now Yost is going to use him in general situations. That is, until he predictably blows up and then he'll be a LOOGY again.
  4. I know it's still early, but it seems to me last year was a mirage. They aren't going to start 24-10, if that's what you mean.
  5. Can Melvin fix this pathetic bench now and quit with this asinine 14 pitcher crap?
  6. Mike Rivera is not the guy you want batting with the game on the line. Dillon would SURE LOOK NICE HERE!
  7. He did yesterday, though. I swear if he brings in a pitcher to bunt over a runner when there's one out I'll scream. I second that.
  8. McClung IS Turnbow. Hard thrower with no control but the Brewers think that can teach him control. Those two down, Cameron and Dillon up. Bush to long relief. 13 batters, 12 pitchers. No more using Suppan to PH. Where do I sign?
  9. You mean, a few good innings hasn't made McClung magically good all of a sudden?
  10. Pitchers are just making Braun look stupid with off speed stuff, low and way out of the zone. They are going to keep throwing it as long as he keeps whiffing at them.
  11. They were certainly pitching around Weeks to get to Gwynn. You gonna take that, Gwynn!?
  12. This game isn't over yet. It's a shame so many have already given up on what's going to be a stunning comeback. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  13. TERRIBLE throw by Braun costs a run. Hard to win low scoring games with bad defense.
  14. How come neither team's 3B can make a backhanded play on a ball today?
  15. He bounced off Rivera like a pin ball. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  16. If Gwynn really is still hurt, he has no business even being on the 25 man roster right now.
  17. My theory: With a 0-0 count, you can sit on a specific pitch and location and, theoretically, make much better contact. You also can't strike out, which is why the numbers are always going to look better than the overall numbers.
  18. During the pregame show, Yost told Bob that Sheets "is a go" for Tuesday. I guess that rotator tear is all healed up.
  19. The trade looked terrible when Melvin made it and it still looks terrible. There was no good reason to think that Vargas or Estrada were anything to covet, IMO. If Melvin thought Davis was done, he should have just dumped him and moved on. And if Ennder says something about Estada being good, except for when he was hurt in 2005, 2006 and 2007, I'm going to scream. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  20. What surprises me the most about it is that we seem to take a lot of first pitches, but somehow we still don't get pitch counts up very quickly. There's been some crazy low pitch counts the last week or so but overall, it's not been very dramatic. For the year, the Brewers have averaged 3.77 P/PA (pitches per plate appearances), vs. the NL average of 3.81. That's about 1 or 2 less pitches for a whole game.
  21. You want to use the run frequency table and look at how often 0 runs are scored. A good rule of thumb is to remember that a team doesn't score about a third of the time after getting a runner at 2B with 0 out or 3B with 1 out.
  22. If you really want to know how well various players do with their first pitch selections, I'd use the "by count" split here: http://www.baseball-reference.com/pi/bsplit.cgi?n1=weeksri01&year=2008#situa-count See how well players do when they put a ball into play on the first pitch Then, see what percentage of their remaining PA's start off 1-0 and 0-1. Do that for every player on the Brewers and put it in a huge spreadsheet.
  23. I assure you, fans of every team are convinced that their team doesn't score often enough in all those situations.
  24. "It went well," said Sheets, who is 3-0 with a 0.96 ERA in four starts over 28 innings this season. Asked if he would pitch against the Cubs, he said, "We'll see, but it felt good." Great news. It would be great to throw both Sheets and Yo at the Cubs this upcoming series.
