  1. And that's why you don't stop watching these things! http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  2. Those hits aren't as productive if the Mets aren't seemingly moving guys to the next base on every out. It always helps to move runners over on an out, no question. I'm just saying that, even if you had replaced every productive out with a K, Suppan would have had some very bad results. 2nd Inning: walks, double, single = 2 runs (what you'd expect) 3rd inning: double, single, walk, single, single = 4 runs (you'd expect 3 runs). The real story is that Suppan allowed 8 guys to get on in 2 innings, IMO.
  3. The Mets announcers have said "productive outs" at least 5 times the past 2 innings...and boy is it true. And here I thought it was all those "productive hits" that were scoring these runs.
  4. I bet if you ask the Phillies, they'd tell you that he was traded for a debt relief of $2.4 mil - $1. The compensation doesn't always have to be another player. Obviously, the Marlins think Helms is worth more than nothing or else they wouldn't have traded for him.
  5. Kapler telling me to take my small sample and shove it, apparently. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  6. He obviously had the talent to be a better player than he was at the end of his previous stint. Are you referring to his .340 OBP and .354 SLG with Boston in 2006? Why is he obviously better than that? Heck, I'd be happy with that at this point. I just do not see how an adjust in "mental approach" makes a bad hitting 32 year old player into a good one. Kapler has been playing professional baseball for over a decade now and has been using that time to hone his offensive approach to fit his physical talents. I cannot believe that his previous approach was such a bad fir for him that it negated so much of his his physical ability. I would presume any adjustment he makes now would result in a minimal change in results, good or bad. I am obviously very happy with his offensive performance so far but unless he had been playing perpetually hurt for the last half of his career, the most likely explanation for his current performance is the dreaded, "small sample".
  7. I'm still waiting for someone to explain to me why Prince being protected by Braun is the cause of his struggles. I thought the (unproven) theory was that an unprotected player will do worse? I think it really doesn't matter who bats first, so if Braun and Fielder want it switched, why not. At least it would break up the only two lefties that are in the lineup.
  8. I know that radar guns don't pick up the velocity of the ball as it crosses home plate, as they are around 85 MPH for a guy who typically reads 93. Gameday's pitch velocity corresponds to pitch f/x's "start velocity", which is read 50 ft from home plate. I think the average radar gun picks it up from right around there as well (possibly a touch closer to home plate). I think it's perfectly fine to say that the radar gun was off today, as no other radar gun in recent memory has shown Sheets consistently throwing under 90 MPH (all the other pitchers' velocities were off as well). Add 4 MPH to what you saw today. Sheets' fastball didn't have it's usual zip today.
  9. Use the "as reliever" split on ESPN: http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/stats/aggregate?sort=ERA&split=128&group=8&season=2008&seasonType=2&statType=pitching&type=reg
  10. ERA RS Win% W L 2004 2.70 3.53 0.462 12 14 2005 3.33 3.73 0.526 10 9 2006 3.82 4.33 0.462 6 7 2007 3.82 5.99 0.706 12 5 RS = run support = runs offense scored per 9 IP while starter was the pitcher of record. Crazy how that works.
  11. I got passes with my 20 game package because I paid before November 20th, or whatever the exact date was. I could have also chosen a luncheon and autographed ball.
  12. Sheets' velocity is actually a couple ticks down. He's around 91-92 right now, according to pitch f/x. He averaged 93-94 in his first 2 starts. The Shea gun is around 4 MPH slow, though.
  13. Actually his 84 mph fastball and 62 mph curve make me believe something isn't right. I'm not disagreeing that me might be hurt. Heck, I said as much earlier in this thread. The same exact thing you just said about this "different scout" were the same things people said about the Sabremetric guys up until a few years ago. Scouts that are going against conventional pitching wisdom are gonna be looked at as outsiders until they are proven right over and over again. Because someone hasn't played since grade school means absolutely nothing. I'm not skeptical just because he his opinion on the matter is in the minority. I'm skeptical because he has no formal training that would allow him to properly analyze the kinematics involved and the effects the resulting forces would even have on the joints. He's taught himself for 3 whole years! http://www.chrisoleary.com/projects/Baseball/WhoIAmAndHowIGotHere.html When I read that, it sounds like a joke. Could he be right? It's possible. Great work has come from the most unexpected places. I sure wouldn't assume it, though.
  14. There is a very good chance Bush is gonna be heading to the DL. Something isn't right "Very good chance" based on one guy's opinion? His own link makes it sound like it's currently being taught in the majors. It's just an unsubstantiated theory from a self-labeled internet expert. The guy is not a doctor, nor did he ever even pitch above grade school. Self taught? Ummm, yeh. From Cot's: "Optional waivers. Optional major league waivers are required when optioning a player who has options remaining but who is more than three calendar years removed from his first appearance on a Major League roster. Because optional waivers are revocable, players usually clear in this scenario." Thanks for clearing that up.
  15. If Bush is hurt, he should be put on the DL (he continues to throw an 86 MPH fastball and seems to have lose control). If he's healthy but continues to be ineffective as a starter, he should be moved into the long relief role, as McClung has no business being there anyway. I don't think sending Bush down is an option, anyway. I could have sworn that I've already read on these boards about a dozen times that Bush can't be sent down without being exposed to waivers and it can't be rescinded if he doesn't clear. Do I remember wrong?
  16. Weeks' offensive numbers are his numbers. Let's not automatically assume that they would be drastically different in a different lineup position because they probably wouldn't be. I understand that Weeks hasn't met many people's expectations for him but to call him a bust isn't fair either. Not every prospect reaches his full potential and Weeks might be one of them but he still has value. The thing that hurts Weeks' value the most, IMO, is his defense. He's a liability at 2B and I think he's going to have to be moved sooner rather than later.
  17. People don't like when a batter strikes out. People don't like when a batter pops out. Call me crazy but I think it's that "out" part that people don't like. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  18. It depends on what you like. I sometimes like having dinner there while watching the first few innings, then heading to the outside area for the rest of the game. You can also just go right outside and have a limited menu out there. I like being there during Cubs games, since Cubs fans don't generally act like complete knobs in there.
  19. I can almost guarantee you that Prince will spend a portion of time explaining how he's been working with a nutritionist to make sure he's getting enough protein in his diet. When he does, I hope that is the end of the previous debate because it should be.
  20. Some seem to have this completely turned around. You are supposed to have to prove that there is causation, not that there isn't.
  21. Until he proves otherwise I'll assume it has had a detrimental effect on him as a player. You are assuming causation without any evidence to support it? Generally not a good way to come to conclusions... ever. Of course, Prince not having a HR after 8 games is pretty much a non event to begin with. He had a similar start last year. What unsubstantiated cause was attributed to that power outage? New bedtime?
  22. This is not a fair comparison but I'm putting it out here to make a point: April: .270/.363/.449/.812 http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/splits?playerId=2642&type=batting&year=2003 People wanted this #8 hitter moved up after his great start as well. I don't think you start shuffling the lineup around based on a great 2 week period. If he's batting over .300 in July......hell yeh. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  23. So, Fielder isn't hitting because he IS being protected? Wow, this whole "protection" stuff is pretty confusing.
  24. The Brewers made a statement when they started the season 24-10 and looked like they would run away with the division. Our opponents can make as many statements as they want, provided the Brewers finish with more wins than them by the end of the year.
  25. This is just so silly. Prince even made mention of making sure he got enough protein. He's not an idiot and neither is the Brewer training staff. They have full time nutritionists! Maybe Prince stopped wearing his lucky socks. THAT must be it! Prince, get those smelly things back on quick, we got the Mets coming up!!!
