  1. Someone else noted, up-thread, that Scott's game logs this year show he posted a shutout appearance most of the time. Here's how many runs the average ML team scored per inning from 99-02: 0 runs: 71% 1 run: 15% 2 runs: 7%&nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp 3+ runs: 7% An NL pitcher would do even better and considering an average reliever gives up less runs than an average starter, even a mediocre NL reliever should give up no runs at least 3 out of every 4 outings. Linebrink has given up no runs in 30 of his 40, 1 IP outings this year.
  2. The Brewers do lack OBP but they have a lot of power, which has allowed them to be an above average offense. Is it always pretty to watch? Heck no. I'd rather have an above average offense that's ugly at times to a pretty offense that can't score, though. The Brewers have the 4th highest runs/game average in the NL. Let's complain about the under performing starting rotation if we want to complain about something.
  3. Since before the season started, my contention was that the two teams were pretty close in talent. I haven't seen anything to really change my mind. As I've been saying for a long time, it's probably going to be an interesting race.
  4. Now the cubs are the best? Wow, talk about riding a winning high right now. That's coming from the guy who said earlier in the year that Suppan and Cappy are the Brewer aces. He's a typical, "what have you done for me lately" fan. Brewerfan.net has gotten a lot of that this year.
  5. Fans want to justify their extreme emotional reactions to tough loses by having the players do the same. It's really that simple. I have no reason to question the Brewer's commitment to winning, so I can't see how getting angry could possibly help them.
  6. You mean Corey Hart? I'm hoping he's not available off the bench very often.
  7. This is where we bring in that young, promising RH outfielder that Melvin traded Inman for. Crap. Anyone want to bet that Jenkins will bring out the windmill swing? Really going out on a limb on that prediction.
  8. I just dont think Brewer fans are used to trading AWAY prospects I have nothing against trading away prospects for talent. We are talking about trading prospects away for 25 innings and a couple draft picks. Melvin better be pretty darn sure that Inman will never be a starter in the majors.
  9. My favorite part about the lineup is batting Mench third against a RH pitcher.
  10. I'm not so worried about the HRs Linebrink has given up but his K rate is WAY down. But Melvin said his scouts checked the guy out and he looks sound, so I can only hope so. He's only had 45 IP this year, so the evidence isn't very strong to the contrary. Still, add everything up and I'm just not very excited about this trade. You are upgrading 25 IP of maybe a 4.5 ERA pitcher for a 3.5 ERA pitcher. That works out to something like 4 runs saved. Now, those 4 runs are going to probably come in higher leverage situations but still. One win, maybe? Melvin said the compensatory picks weighted heavily in his decision, so I have to think he was not very high on Inman at all. I hope he's right.
  11. Some here have judged some players too quickly, so those (not all the same people, BTW, a point you elide) who would give up on Balfour are judging him too quickly? Sample size is a concept that goes against human perception, so it will be something that baseball fans will always struggle with. If a batter looks horrible for a week, how could he possibly be good? If a pitcher we are otherwise unfamiliar with comes up and stinks up the joint, he can't possibly be good. I bet if you thought back at the generalizations you've made about a player based on small samples, you were probably wrong about as often as you were right. The problem is, it's difficult to stay objective when trying to self assess in that situation, however. It's a small sample, but it is a sample, and sometimes extremity trumps sample size. It's a factor, of course. But when you are talking about 3 IP, it's easy for luck (if that's what caused Balfours's troubles.. I don't really know, of course) to trump skill. It's like saying Gwynn's first 36 AB were So good that they couldn't possibly have been a result of luck. In reality, the sample was so small that it allows for the possibility of very extreme outcomes. The calculations take it all into account. If you are interested in more information, shoot me a message.
  12. It's so witty when fans change Brewer names in a disparaging manner. I can never get enough!
  13. Weeks still has shown almost no power but he's hardly been striking out at all lately and has been getting a decent share of walks. I'll take that over the Weeks of 2 weeks ago. Sometimes CV is just nasty. Sometimes Turnbow isn't. Kudos to Yost for recognizing that Turnbow didn't have it tonight. I wish I could tell the difference, beyond the results. Turnbow looked like he had the good stuff and then got blasted. Can't it just sometimes be that the batters did well and or just found some holes?
  14. I'm surprised that this lineup could even score 4 runs, so it's hard for me to be surprised that the Brewers haven't added to their early lead.
  15. He's got 70 ML innings in his career and he's got a 5.128 ERA. I think that's enough of a sample size to say he can't get it done in the bigs. Looking at only 70 IP worth of a relief pitcher's ERA from 3 years ago tells us very little about his actual talent right now. For a guy with so few ML innings, I'd rely heavily on his minor league stats and scouting to put together my best guess for his expected performance in the majors. Balfour was lights out in AAA this year and it seems like he's got some pretty decent stuff to justify it. That doesn't guarantee success at the major league level but it's a good sign. Don't get me wrong, I don't think losing Balfour on waivers would be some great loss. If Melvin can replace him with a proven commodity, great. But as is often the case, I think people are just way to quick to judge Balfour's talent. This year a lone, there's maybe a half dozen examples of Brewer players being grossly over rated or under rated based on a handful of AB or IP. A couple players have been been both under rated AND over rated already this year.
  16. Hey Russ, when are you going to change your aviater, or are you keeping it for your entire career at brewerfan.net? Can't say I've really thought about it. I will commit to at least this: If the Brewers win the World Series, I'll change it. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  17. The fact that Jenkins has never won a gold glove is a darn travesty.
  18. Yost has a formula that gets Cordero a reasonable amount of innings (over which would be overuse). I'm amazed at how many people fail to realize that you can't use the best RP all the time. You don't have to increase his innings at all to get more out of him. Personally, I'd rather use Coco in a game like last night over a game where the Brewers have a 3 run lead going into the 9th. Use him in the toughest situations with the game on the line. Managers manage to not get criticized by the masses.
  19. Estrada dogging it certainly annoyed me, but it wasn't even close to costing the Brewers the win, IMO. I think the only reason the catcher double clutched was because he had the time to get a better angle. Don't you watch the news? The less people that can be blamed for something, the better.
  20. As terribly frustrating as that game was to watch, the result was that the Brewers lost 1/2 a game of their 3.5 game lead in the central. I'd still rather be a Brewer fan than a Cubs fan right now.
  21. If a pitcher can't handle a manager coming out and telling him to throw some damn strikes, that guy likely isn't long for surviving in the majors. On one hand, fans make comments like that all the time, where players should be expected to handle whatever situations are thrown their way. On the other, players are constantly analyzed about what roles they can handle or not (closer mentality, clutch player, etc...). While I tend to side with the "they can handle the stress" philosophy, it can't really be both, can it? The guy hasn't been in the majors since 2004, when he apparently blew out his shoulder and elbow. I guess I'm willing to give him a bit more slack than 3 innings, provided Melvin can't get someone clearly better.
  22. I realize he's been about as bad as you could imagine but judging a guy solely by 3 IP isn't exactly fair. He did great in AAA and I'd guess the scouts like his stuff as well. If Melvin can trade for a better guy, great. Otherwise, I can't see giving up on him already. Maybe Yost should rethink his, "Yell at a pitcher if he's struggling" philosophy?
  23. Jenkins has had a solid but unspectacular career. That's more than many prospects can say. I think his days of starting every day are over, however. He's not the kind of batter I'd expect to age gracefully.
  24. Completely burning out the bullpen is not how you want to start a string of 8 games in 7 days.
  25. Now seems like a good time to remind the Brewer faithful that, win or lose, this is only one game. Are you with me!!?? Hello?
