  1. I can't remember Melvin placing much emphasis ever on reducing strikeouts. Any quotes (not from the last few months) that you could link to?
  2. I agree with all of this, and would just like to add that the teams payroll will likely increase $7-14 million next year. From prior comments by Mark A. I don't know if that can be assumed.
  3. There's no team in baseball that won't have problems if three starting infielders get hurt. And the fact the Brewers had Bill Hall waiting to fill one of those posts is amazing. How many backup infielders capable of having an OPS over .800 should a team have on their roster? How many do they have this year? ZERO.
  4. It's certainly possible but I don't think so.
  5. Where the hell do you come up with "Mark A. is making all the personnel decisions?" While I don't know the exact level of involvement from Mark A., it's pretty clear to me that it's been increasing over the last 6 months or so. I don't think it's a cooincidence that Melvin pursuing Pierre and Roberts cooincided with Mark A. making public statements about needing more team speed and less strikeouts (something to that effect, at least). Same goes for Mark A. wanting a better bench and Melvin aquiring Counsell. IMO, if Mark A. does anything more than be a spokesman for the team with regard to personnel moves, his involvment is too great.
  6. High interest in Roberts and Pierre = Mark A. Emphasis on veteran backups = Mark A. High interest in Suppan = Mark A.? Why doesn't Mark A. just fire Melvin and take on the GM position full time. He's been apparently making all the personnel decisions this off season anyway. If I were Melvin I'd be sick of owners meddling.
  7. The playing field is not level and Mark A. is in it for profit, first and foremost. Can't Brewer fans just accept it and move on? Fair or not, it's not changing anytime soon.
  8. Yeh, I think the ezboard seach looks only at threads on the actual page you are viewing. In other words, useless.
  9. Masking your opinion as some kind of growing general concensious is kind of silly, IMO. I'm sure there are people who agree with you but they appear to be in a minority, ATM. I also suspect that most of them would automatically assume the above, unless the Brewers started spending $80+ mil/year. Hell, we all knew Mark A. wasn't going to bankrupt himself to get a championship to begin with. Anyone who thought he was going to put winning in front of profits was kidding themselves. Most owners are simply trying to make money. That's why it's called professional sports.
  10. I've never seen an Akira Kurosawa movie but there's a couple guys here that seem to love his work. I can download Dreams (Yume) on the 360 and was wondering if that would be a decent introduction to his work? I like artsy-fartsy, slow paced movies, so it looks pretty appealing, even if it's only a compilation of short stories. Should I hold out for a better Kurosawa film? Which one?
  11. Thanks Toby. You gave me some reason for optimism during the Lopes years. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  12. Hardly. Under his current deal, Sheets is 16-16. In that same time Suppan is 28-17. Is your point that Sheets should demand to be traded to the Cardinals?
  13. I agree, sorta. With a growing disparity between rich and poor, I'm a bit skeptical about assuming the Brewers keeping up with that 11% inflation. Still, 2/3rds of the teams in the league probably will, so I dunno. A 4 year, $44 mil deal with 11% "inflation" turns into a 4 year, $34 mil deal in present value. $8.5 mil a year.... not horrible. Groundball pitchers generally rely on defense more than flyball pitchers. Specifically, infield defense is very important to the success of a groundball pitcher. With Braun, Weeks and Fielder being around for years to come, I just don't think Suppan is a great fit for the Brewers. Fielder was adequate defensively with everything but receiving throws last year, IMO. Fielder did not do Hall any favors last year in that regard.
  14. Sounds like many retailers are hoarding wiis for the 17th. Best Buy is confirmed.
  15. Cut Weeks Ks and his chances of getting on base obvisously increase. And his walks and power would likely decrease.
  16. He comes to Milwaukee, but you are really *only* on the hook for 26 million. These contracts are guaranteed and you can't just assume you can trade any guy whenever you want to. The league is littered with aging, overpriced vets who teams are trying to give away and can't.
  17. I really liked the hour long formats of both Earl and Office. I wouldn't mind if they always did that.
  18. endaround, once again this is a problem with the perception of Brewers' fans. They assume that signing a guy means we are stuck with him and his contract in its entirety. Dhonks, once again this is a problem with the perception of Brewers' fans. They assume that signing a guy means we can just get rid of him and his contract in its entirety whenever we want. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif Suppan is a nice pitcher. I'm just not sure a team like the Brewers should be tying him up for 4 years, however. It also makes me very nervous to think of the Brewers signing a pitcher longterm that relies heavily on infield defense. With the likes of Weeks, Fielder and Braun being his defenders for years to come, that's just asking for trouble. The difference between a 1.3 WHIP and a 1.4 WHIP is 20 baserunners over 200 innings, or one baserunner over 10 innings. That's a huge difference. Converting 1 out to one base runner is worth over half a run. That's why team defense is such a huge variable in a pitcher's ERA, especially for groundball pitchers. What's $2-3M more between friends? It isn't our money. You realize that the Brewers operate on a finite budget, right?
  19. I can understand why Melvin didn't offer him arbitration but that doesn't mean Ohka can't be resigned to a 1 year deal, right? What better place to work for that big free agent contract in 2008...
  20. "The Brewers should use Mench's terrible stint with Milwaukee to really low ball him into taking a smaller contract, something like one year, 3 million, and then trade Jenks and platoon Mench with Gross in LF. So, don't offer Mench arbitration and just sign him? I don't see Mench agreeing to that. Despite being horrible for the Brewers, Mench wasn't too bad before that. Some team would give him a better offer.
  21. Lieber's old and didn't have a very good year last year but his enderlying stats were still decent and he's only signed through next year, anyway. If he has a good first half and Yo! is ready, he could be dealt at the deadline. I just want Turnbow's silly contract off the books. He never should have been signed to that in the first place.
  22. Lieber would be a decent back-end of the rotation guy, but I would hope that the Brewers would at least get a little salary relief as well. Turnbow and Mench combined would make about what Lieber is this year. I think Turnbow is done, personally, so I like this deal a lot. That said, this really seems like a long shot, ATM.
  23. But i think that team could average 4.5 runs per game More like 3.5, imo. That might be one of the worst lineups in the league.
  24. Personally, in my time here I've never understood why there are two seperate boards. Personally, I don't want the major league forums clogged up with made-up, magical trade ideas. I don't mind seeing trade rumors that have been written about somewhere else, here, however. And no, other team's messageboards shouldn't count.
  25. Wow, now it's not the manager or even the general manager who is filling out the lineup card, it's the assistant GM. So, you think Melvin gives Yost 25 guys and Yost takes it from there? That Russell Branyan seemed to show that, in the end, Melvin is Yost's boss and has the final say. Frankly, that's the way it should be. Yost might decide who's in the starting lineup on a day to day basis but melvin decides who's the starters.
