  1. It's not really a strawman. I'm asking where the explanation that Macha hates/dislikes/doesn't draw hearts around young players comes from. Macha's lack of intelligence would require the same explanation. Essentially what I'm asking is what leads people to assume that Macha will make his decision based upon emotional or nonrelevant criteria.
  2. I do remember Hall getting starts but that was mostly before Gamel got called up. I guess he was stealing time from McGehee. Hall did continue to get spot starts after Gamel got called up, I imagine it was mostly against leftys. If it wasn't then a conclusion can be drawn but is that conclusion more likely "macha hates young players" or "hall is on the roster and maybe we can get something out of him". Given Counsell's production can Macha be blamed for playing him?
  3. So wait were using Occom's Razor to conclude that Macha has a bias against young players based on that one statement (especially when Macha has gone out of his way to praise Narveson all ST). Could it just be that Narveson didn't pitch all that well. Furthermore where is this bias against young players coming from? Gamel? McGehee outperformed him and Gamel struggled making contact he should have been in the minors but that isn't Macha's fault. Last year Macha stuck with Parra, played Escobar, brought Stetter in in tough situations. I struggle to think of any other situations where a vet has been played over soemone with better promise and tolerable performance.
  4. I thought the best part of the broadcast yesterday were the interviews of the players. Specifically relevant to this topic was Zaun saying that he prefers to call a lot of fastballls making the location on those fastballs important. In my mind this seems to be a good idea for Parra because he can focus on locating the fastball before messing with the more inconsistent breaking stuff. That said, at least yesterday, he couldn't locate the fastball or throw the breaking stuff for strikes.
  5. Doesn't this make the Brewers awfully left handed off the bench, Gerut, Edmonds, Gamel, Inglett, Counsell, Oeltjen. For righties all they have are the catcher (unless is Kottaras) and Heether?
  6. I saw this at the Mayfair Imax and it was worth it just for the visuals, undescribable. That said the plot beats you with ham hands. The planet is named Pandora, the final battle is code named Valkyrie, not to mention the absurdity that is Unobtanium. The politics were equally unnuanced. The hype likely made my expectations unrealistic.
  7. I have often asked myself why the NBA allows this sort of officiating and I think it comes down to sacrificing the game domestically for the benefit of the game internationally. Internationally nobody cares about the Bucks but they do care that Kobe had 39 last night and don't know how he got it. Domestically though the NBA is turning off its fan base in Milwaukee Charlotte, Indiana etc. because these teams can't overcome the created disadvantages. Really who wants to root for the Washington Generals? It is for this reason that the NBA is not growing domestically. The NBA is taking the short cut to growing the game unlike the NFL which used parity to grow the game domestically and then internationally. You know its bad when people think MLB's system is more fair, Stern doens't seem to care.
  8. Closer to Mifflin is "the Curve" on Park Street, they have huge portions and is a good greasy spoon type
  9. I know he has been hurt a lot and plays in Cincinnati but I always thought Brandon Phillips should be a lock for 2B gold glove if they're judged based on flashy plays and semi dangerous hitting. I was also surprised by Rollins who didn't really have a good year, especially when Tulowitzski is probably a better defender anyway
  10. The only problems I have with BA is that I feel he hypes up the action. Mediocre ballplayers are given more credit then they are due and routine plays are made into something more. Sometimes the action in baseball is a little undramatic and that's okay. Also, and this is more of a general criticism of the field, but why do TV announcers feel the need to talk all the time. I can see the action and the graphics on the screen so I don't need them described to me. I'd rather have it be like radio where the greats always have a little dead air.
  11. I'm confused. If the Bucks are really worried about the luxury tax then why did they spend money on Delfino, Warrick, Ukic, Kurt Thomas, Sharpe? Wouldn't it have been cheaper to get multiple years of Sessions for $4m/per then have either multiple year deals (Delfino, Ukic?) or expirings that you'll have to replace again next year. It seems to me that the Bucks downgraded their talent this summer without the attendant savings such an effort should produce. I wasn't a huge fan of Villanueva on the court but the fact that the Bucks got nothing for him and Sessions doesn't smack of good asset managment.
  12. I thought Hammond's strategy was to follow the Pistons strategy of maximizing assets? If so, what gives? Who cares how many point guards you have, you're not winning now, but Sessions is literally one of three or four actual assets on the Bucks and they're going to let him walk for 3.6m a year or half of what Ridinour (the Jason Kendall of point guards becuase common folk can't understand his value) makes.
  13. For the little legaue I coached in we had older players umping younger players for most of the season, then at the end of the year the adult district umpires came in. From my observations the kid umpires were far more consistent with their strike zone (good or bad) and overall pleasent to work with (of course the coaches on my team are not yellers and the parents and kids in our league are well behaved). Whereas the adult umpires were ill tempered (again with a tame crowd) and had strike zones that were all over the place. Furthermore the adult umpires were sticklers for irrelevant rules. One of our kids had a brother who played for the local high scool. Since the high school's colors were the same as our teams he wore the high school team's hat during games. It was agaisnt the rules but again its Little League so who cares. Well the district umpire cared and made a stink about it of course he blew it on an actually improtant call but he got his point across on wearing the proper uniform. After the season we all agreed that the teenage umpires were more consistent and better sports.
  14. So if the Nats do indeed draft #1 and #2, what kind of coin will they need to sign both Stasburg and Bryce Harper?
  15. On ESPN there is an article about this very topic. A majority of the quotes are from grizzled old veterens about the good old days. But there are also some interesting opinions about why 100 pitches isn't the same as the 100 of yesteryear. Link
  16. Correct...in addition to filling the ace's with free agency...it's a package deal. Be good at both and spend wisely. I unequivocally agree with that approach. But why then does Melvin have to be fired? Because our draft picks got injured and he couldn't convince an ace free agent to come here? That sets a pretty high bar.
  17. So you think the Brewers should draft better pitchers (since both of those players are on their original contracts). I don't think you'll get much argument there
  18. I think for arguments sake we can replace Gamel's name with #1 can't miss type prospect (despite the fact that Young is sort of missing)
  19. Only if your sure that the Cain/Gwynn duo can equal Cameron's production. Oh yeah and we wouldn't have Gamel because we would have traded him to get Garza. But I think the bigger worry is what happens in two years to this ballclub. All of the young guy's salary increase through arbitration yet you still have major money tied up Matsuzaka/ Haren.
  20. I don't think it is an either or consistently good v. championship argument. In the last few years teams that have just barely made the playoffs have gotten hot and made it to the WS ('06 Cardinals, Rockies, '05 Astros). Being a consistent playoff team can have both long term and short term benefits.
  21. I think the Brewers have given him "a shot for even a week" he has an at bat in the last 9 games, he started 6 of those. The three games where he came off the bench were started by lefties. The only playing time he is missing out on is against lefties and in games where his defense presents a risk. In the interests of winning games it seems that the player which can hit lefties (arguably equally) well and fields better should get those at bats.
  22. No but he is not starting with a blank slate reputaiton. Fair or not he is going to have to show, over a longer period of time in limited opportunities that he is a solid fielder in order to overcome his reputation.
  23. I disagree that Hall's salary has any impact on Gamel's playing time. It's Hall's defense that plays. Until Gamel hits or fields well enough in his limtied opportunities to overcome Hall's glove he will continue to have his playing time limited.
  24. From what I understand your impressions of the "free market" aspect of the international free agents is accurate. I imagine Canadians are not included among internationaional free agents because of the Blue Jays. As far as the Brewers are concerned there have been international signings, most notably Escobar. The Brewers have been historically judicious but much more active lately.
  25. I think every one of Parra's quotes is encouraging to hear. It was Parra's power stuff that made everyone excited about him in the first place. Let's hope it translates!
