  1. I think the reason everyone liked Gantner so much was that he was a Wisconsin guy who was blue collar and a self-made player. He had nowhere near the talent of Molitor and Yount, yet he managed to make a pretty good career for himself. He no doubt benefited with being linked to Yount and Molitor, but he was a solid 2B who could steal a base. Compare him offensively to today's 2B and he certainly comes up short, but he was adequate in his day. I have fond memories of watching pre-game warmups when Frank Howard would hit popups to Gumby. Highest popups you have ever seen and Gumby would catch them without so much as a wobble.
  2. Capellan, Zach Jackson, and Parra should get us Otsuka. Some might claim that is too much, but it might win the Central for us.
  3. Why would we now use Wise? I don't get it. Any chance we could bring up Yo and make Vargas a late man? He throws 91-92 as a starter, maybe he could make the conversion ala Jose Mesa.
  4. I don't blame Yost at all. He is playing the cards he is dealt with. I can't believe that Atlanta got Soriano for Ramirez. What was Seattle thinking?
  5. Spurling is a minor league pitcher. You only get lucky so long in the majors. He will be gone by July. As for Turnbow, if we are serious about contending there is no way we can trust him as our 8th inning setup man. All relievers struggle at some point but I think his confidence gets rattled and then he can't throw a strike. The 8th inning guy has to throw strikes. Anyone out there we can deal for?
  6. That Aguilar fellow must be a treat to watch. All strikeouts and walks. A bit of a Turnbow clone it seems.
  7. I know it seemed that Smoltz left due to his finger, but I think he may have had trouble with his shoulder. He seemed to have problems getting it loose. Hopefully nothing serious. I like the guy.
  8. We are in first place. We are not looking to trade one of our best hitters. Hall is NOT getting traded. This is just silly.
  9. I know we don't really like Mench but I do believe we need a RH bat in LF against LH pitching. I do not want Jenkins playing every day. He seems to play better with some rest. Who plays LF if we trade Mench? Rottino?
  10. I don't know who we should, but I think we will take the guy from Canada. Just a hunch.
  11. Weeks a day off, no!! As others have posted, put him in the 6-7 hole. What can be the reasoning to playing Graffy?
  12. Cole Hamels....we lose. The guy is a stud and his changeup will have our RH hitters looking silly. I'm usually pretty optimistic, but not tonight. Go Crew.
  13. Actually, I think it would be Turnbow, Putz, Cordero. But one question, why are we talking about Putz? Aren't the Mariners in the race? It is May, why would they trade their closer?
  14. Always good to see a Huntsville win, unfortunately in this case at the expense of Craig Molldrem, Carolina pitcher that hails from Wisconsin. Great kid that is trying to overcome a second shoulder surgery.
  15. Do we really want our top pitching prospect PH? I know he can handle the bat but I think that would be the last guy off the bench when he isn't pitching.
  16. Sorry Don, despite your insight I would still prefer to hold on to my pitchers for long-term security, not some supposed phenom that has done nothing but play in NY to earn the hype. You don't need every outfield position to be a stud when you have a good hitting infield. You do, on the other hand, need good pitching. I stand by my original opinion.
  17. I just don't see us trading away any pitching this year. It is simply too valuable, we can get by with Gross, Hall, and Hart next year if we wish. Throw Gwynn, Rottino, and Nix into the mix and we are ok there. On the other hand, I am absolutely scared to death of not having pitching depth and having guys like Winkelsas on our roster.
  18. AJ, do you have the stats on Spurling for inherited runners? His ERA is better than I thought it would be. It just seems that Yost might be waiting longer to pull the trigger due to a lack of confidence. I could be wrong. I'm not venting here, just wondering.
  19. I really think Yost has no confidence in Spurling, and he needs to go. He might have good stuff but he doesn't right now. Estrada didn't appear all that interested tonight...I wonder if that is why he seems to not have the best reputation. Tough one to lose but hopefully we come back strong tomorrow night. Feel bad for Bush...pitched great tonight....for six. Not sure if Bush would get pulled but if we could get someone to consistently pitch the 7th for us...
  20. I'm not sure how you figure that Vargas would be their #3 starter. Who is pitching poorly on the Cubs, other than Zambrano?
  21. trwi7, Not sure where you got your forecast but a 100% chance of rain tonight.
  22. I'm guessing this one will get rained out. Heavy rain expected.
  23. I hear there is a guy on Milwaukee's AAA team that is worth a look--guy named Capellan. I see he hasn't given up a run in 3 appearances. Difficult to find bullpen guys. Keep him.
  24. Someone in our pen will blow up and Cappy will be up by mid-May if not earlier. I just don't see a deal here.
